best paint for new wood cabinets -- cabinet coat? miller?

18 years ago

Hi,

We are (finally) painting our new, custom wood kitchen cabinets. I know the look I want: white (a crisp, clean look but not to stark), a rich, hard, smooth finish and ease of clean up.

We tried Miller's Acrinamel High Gloss and I hate it (husband is willing to stick with it). It doesn't cover well (he has done four coats! and primer), and doesn't have a rich finish. It doesn't look "wow" I can tell you that.

So, I have researched on this site about Cabinet Coat. I called Ace Hardware here in Salem, OR and they sell it for 12.99 a quart.

I guess my question is: does Miller really suck, or is it my imagination? And, is Cabinet Coat the way to go... or are there other brands I should look into?

Thank you so much!

    Hello from Fargo, ND!
    I have no experience w/ Miller, but you won't go wrong with Cabinet-Coat!
    (you're prob'ly tired of my babbling about it...!?)

    If you're fussy...and why NOT be?!...
    * Lightly sand your surface. Make sure there's no "wavers" or ridges you don't like. Remove all dust.
    * Use the best brush you can get your hands on ($15+) for Latex paints. Using just a few strokes, apply an even first coat. Long, light, easy strokes to smooth it. After 30 seconds to a minute....GET OUT OF IT!!
    * Clean your brush...call it a day.
    * DO NOT go back into it. Leave it alone 'till tomorrow.
    * Let it level overnight in a dust-free area.
    * OPTIONAL: lightly sand dried 1st coat with 220 or finer, remove dust, and apply the "money" coat!
    * Each morning, you'll probably be startled how nice it looks!!
    * To me, it's very low odor, & soap & water clean-up!
    * Our ACE has the gallons at $39. The tint-base is $40.

    Insl-x makes some Dang good coatings, & Cabinet-Coat is one of-'em!

    >>> Try to create a dust-free area if possible. Pets/birds should be far away...dander/dust you know!

    I agree with Faron. Go with the Cabinet Coat. I used it on the woodwork and doors in my kitchen which were stained a dark color. I will shortly be tackling the cabinets. So far I'm extremely pleased with the finish. It levels beautifully, has a nice, soft sheen, and it withstands a lot of abuse.

    The reason I chose this paint is that I wanted the durability of an oil, but the easy cleanup and long-lasting whiteness of a water-based paint. I researched the subject to death on the internet and could not find one negative comment about this paint.

    The only addition I can make to Faron's directions is that I really like to prime the surface after the usual preparation of sanding, etc. My preference is the Zinsser Cover Stain oil primer. This primer dries fast,covers a lot of sins and fills imperfections in a surface.

    I special ordered my paint from a local Ace Hardware store and had to buy a case of two gallons. However, I like it so much that I intend to use it on all the rest of the woodwork in my house, so I'm sure it will get used up.

    Go with it and I'm sure you will be very pleased with this paint.
