What do you think of this chandelier for my dining room?

I have been spending way too much time trying to find a chandelier for my dining room. I'm the most indecisive person, and have been from a to z on this, but I'm about to pull the trigger and order this chandelier. It is very different than what I first started off thinking I liked 2 weeks ago...

I don't have a current picture of the finished room (because it is not finished!!) but I have the picture of the room when the previous owner owned it. I like the green and will be painting it very close to this color. My table and chairs are much nicer (imho)! LOL

House is a historic home, 1937 on bayfront property. Has a vintage, cottage feel...

From Sunrise Drive

and here is the chandelier... yes ?? or should I keep looking or go in a totally different direction?

As long as the size works, I think it is wonderful! The room is lovely. We need more pics of the house and yard/bay!!!

I like it too. The detail seem appropriate to the age of your house and it will dress up the room -- make it a bit more formal, but still be light and not too fussy. And you picked something I don't remember seeing in all my light fixture searches in the last couple of months. How did you do that? :D

Sorry to be the only naysayer here, but I think that chandelier isn't the best choice for that room. The chandlier that you have selected look French Country and your house looks Cape Coddish. The Cape cod style tends to be more simple and have straight lines. Just my two cents but I don't think the chandelier you have chosen works. Sorry to be the naysayer!

    I love it!
    Although I agree with andreadeg
that the fixture is French Country
    (or perhaps Italian country),
I still think it still could work well in your house.
    It is a beautiful chandelier
and somehow feels just right in your room.

Could you post a pictures with your furniture?
Seeing it with your furniture might help us advise you.

I love the chandelier, but it does not look completely at home.... Yet. Depending upon the direction you take with colors, furnishings, etc, I think it could work very well. If you are going for a more Nantucket cottage feel, it might be a little too decorative. Is this a Circa Lighting chandelier? If not, it certainly looks it. I love every single thing they sell. They have other lights that are a bit simpler, but the same idea, that sort of suggest a period or style with those marvelous lines.

I am so impressed that you found something you like in two weeks! I had a chandelier I disliked for five years, then replaced it with one I loved but looked horrible in the DR, and it took me almost a year to replace that one!

Love your home and hope to see all the finished pictures!

Okay... I think I am in style confusion!! I obviously have a lot to learn... but after reading andrea's francoise and kswl's comments... I googled "nantucket & cape cod cottage" it is a look I love! I do however find that I gravitate a lot to the french country feel, which I think my dining room furniture looks like. It's not that old, and I planed on keeping it a while... but maybe it looks at of place? Too french country?

I definitely think I need to stick with you all while I decorate, but I do hope to re-purpose some of my furniture. I did give away 3 boxes of decorations to my sisters, and I have pictures that I just feel aren't going to work (as well as lamps!)

When I googled "cape cod chandeliers" I didn't love the ones I saw, except I liked this one.. {{gwi:1615754}}From Drop Box

You all asked for a pictures of our home, I just snapped some this morning to share. I will only share with you all, because you're online!! LOL... there is still MUCH left to unpack, paint and final details (like light covers, door knobs!!) I have restored ALL the hardware - the door knobs are all brass and crystal knobs. Some doors are not hanging because they off and in my workshop, waiting for me to finish stripping, sanding and painting!

It's been a real labor of love... we have done 90% ourselves.

Good gosh, Gertrude, that is a gorgeous house with sunlight streaming through everywhere, not to mention your priceless water view! Having seen the house, I vote no to your 2nd choice as too colonial looking. Your 1st choice seem more in keeping with the cottage look of the interiors you showed.

I'm soooo jealous right now. I LOVE your house! Can I move in and be your maid? I promise to not take up too much space and wait on you hand and foot!

Okay, seriously, my house is also cape coddish and I adore French Country style too. I've made some mistakes in my house where I've inadvertantly gone French Country and should have stayed with the CC style. I love CC style too, and CC and FC can be mixed together, but one has to be careful and deliberate while doing so.

Having seen more pictures of your house I don't think the new chandelier goes, nor the black wrought iron chandelier. Your table lends towards French country but it works in that space because it's not delicate and fancy as FC can sometimes be.

What a beautiful home! You have made some lovely choices for your house already. Keep going...

tinker, I have been fascinated with your remodel - what a beautiful home in a lovely location! From your pics, you've kept with a vintage feel. The kitchen, bathrooms all evoke that. The 1st chandelier matches your DR furniture better but may not be the best choice if you want to blend with your other lighting fixtures. Not sure if that's even necessary though.

Thanks everyone, I love hearing you all love the house! When we were buying it... our Realtor thought we should know it down and build new. Actually - that is probably what someone would have done.... except us, or I should say me!! DH doesn't love the house, maybe it's all the work that needs to be done to fully restore it, so when others love my house like I do... it makes me smile!! I LOVE this house!

Andrea, pack your bags girl.. it's a deal!! You can even have the back bedroom, which I didn't take a picture of.... but it have a window that looks out to the bay AND pool!!

    last modified: 10 years ago

Andrea will have a fight on her hands for that back bedroom, Tinker! I absolutely LOVE your new home. It reminds me of the old Florida cottage style houses on the bay in Tampa. It is wonderful, and someone has already done a sensitive and beautiful kitchen restoration at some point. I'm with you---why tear down that charming jewel of a home---which has withstood many hurricanes, obviously---and replace it with a hulking big stucco house that won't have half the character?

I am still not sure the first light is exactly right, to me, but the second one looks more New England than Florida. I have no idea the direction you're planning to take with your house, French Country furnishings would look great and the dining room furniture looks appropriate and beautiful in your DR, but if it were me choosing fixtures I would put in something a tiny bit more rustic. I think a lantern is a great idea. Here are some pretty lights from the company I mentioned above, just to look at. (The one with the shades looks like it might go with the period nature of the built ins, sort of a twenties look :) )

    Hi Tinker,

I love everything about your house -- your kitchen, your decor, your views....
I especially love your play of white fabric and darker woods.
Thanks so much for all the pictures!

A friend who is an interior designer offered me this advice when I was looking for a chandelier (which you can take or leave):
worry less about the style and more about the volume, scale and overall impact and presence in the space.
Of course I think that the style is also important; but my friend's advice has also been helpful to me.

As for style, most successful interiors are a blend of different styles -- there just needs to be some strand that helps them feel related.
I think you could make an argument that the original european farmhouse chandelier you picked does feel related to some of the "cottage" elements in your house.

Best wishes for your renovation. It is going to be spectacular -- actually, it already is.

I really love it and know you will pick something wonderful that reflects your personality and taste as well as the home's character. I'm not sure I've seen the one I'd pick here -- would have to look some more, but light fixtures are like clothes and jewelry -- a personal choice. I'm just so glad you are giving it the TLC it deserves and didn't listen to the notion of tearing it down.

Your house is so wonderful, I'm so glad that you took the time to post pictures. I can only imagine the work involved but thank goodness you didn't tear it down!

As for the chandelier, yeah, it may not matter what you put there! But, if you want to stay with that cottage cape cod feel consider finding something with more visual weight, and not so many lines. A lantern could be perfect.

I don't know if you've ever seen the Currey and Co chandeliers? I love to go to their site just to look at their products, even when i'm not really shopping. This particular chandelier caught my eye for your room. Somethign simple, with some visual weight, although I'm not crazy about the black for your room. But maybe this will spark some ideas...

If it looks great in the space and you love it go for it. And I agree with your choice, it fits a bedroom, its beautiful. Remember, people used to pride themselves on their "import" finds while traveling abroad, its not unheard of to find older homes with antique items from other countries. Even in mega mansions tycoons prided themselves on their finds in Europe and took pains to bring chandeliers or furniture pieces back. Just do it, unless youre making exterior changes to your house that the local historic committee is going to frown on, then Id draw the line. In this case go for it, it looks serene for a bedroom, more so than a black chandelier regardless of the style home.

I didn't have a chance to look at all the Currey and Co choices in that link, but if you like the idea of a lantern, look at the Bardwell and Ardmore -- and all the rest of them since I may have gotten 1/3 to 1/2 way before I had to go.
