I need help with granite colour choice too! :)

Hey Everyone,

I noticed everyone on this site is super helpful when it comes to opinion's and I sure do need some of those now so here it goes.

I will be doing granite countertops for my kitchen and went to go look at some slabs from a nearby supplier. Originally I was thinking light colours to contrast my chocolate brown maple cabinets, something like sagebrush which would match my lighter beige/grey tiled floors as well. While there I saw a Titanium black granite which floored me, really beautiful slab with lots of black and browns in it, I just dont know if it will be too dark for my cabinets. My kitchen is a fair size (roughly 16'x 21')and the entire back wall is windows with lots of natural light so im thinking i may have enough light not too get a "dungeon" effect if i do black. I've attached a link to a photobucket site with pics of the kitchen below.

Any help and opinion's on the matter would be really appreicated, im just worried about making the wrong decision!!

Thanks again,

Bruno

Gorgeous cabinets! Such a rich brown!

Do you happen to have any photos of the slabs that you saw? Personally, I think a lighter granite would look best. However, perhaps you could have the best of both worlds, and do the darker granite on the perimeter counters, leaving a lighter (focal point) granite for your island?

Thank you! I was really happy with the way the cabinets came out. I dont have a specific photo of the slab, i should have brought my camera with me, but these are very close to what the two slabs looked like.

I did think of doing the two types of granite as you suggested but was worried that they may compete seeing as they both have distinct patterns. Do you think that would be an issue?

    Hi Bruno, welcome!

We do a lot of reinforcing of "get what you like" here, but since it looks like your cabinets are already in, I'm going to say listen to the voice that's telling you that no matter how much you love it, it's going to be dark. There isn't enough contrast so with black counters and those cabinets, the separation between counter and cabinet will disappear. That's a legit look, but it doesn't sound like what you're looking for. On the other hand, that slab is so varied and dramatic it could really work.

Can you take a door (or three) to the yard to see them with your particular slab? Preferably not in sunlight which will be too bright to imitate your kitchen. See how you like it there.

I wouldn't put these two granites together, and frankly, anything you put with the black is going to dilute it. What might actually look stunning is the heavy movement and bright color on the island and the plainer black part on the perimeter.

Most of all, however, I think you should keep looking. You should be able to find a stone with as much drama but more in keeping with your planned color scheme.

Typically, I choose lighter granites but that Titanium is spectacular. I think it would work beautifully. The facts that you have a light floor and lots of natural light is a plus with those great choices. Love the true brown of your cabs.

I'd look at more slabs. You should be able to find something equally dramatic as the Titaniium Black in lighter colors.

thank you everyone for taking the time to help i really appreciate it, and thank you very much plllog for helping me out with how to post pics, i was going nuts last night at midnight trying to figure it out!

it seems the general consesus is like i kind of figured, that light might be a better choice, or at least the safer bet. i might go back and look at some more slabs and maybe a second look at the sagebrush which did work nice with my floors as well.

I loved a slab that had similar tones and effects as yours. But dark didn't suit my kitchen either. I learned there are a lot of dramatic slabs out there in lighter colors. I'd go back and look again. Granite is one of those things you should look until you find one you really love. Don't settle.

A little photoshop should help you visualize!

thats awesome! thank you so very much for that basianov, that is incredibly helpful. i cant thank you enough for taking the time to do that for me. seeing it like this is makes me visualize it much easier. i would say that the light may be the safer choice it looks like. i know the titanium is more dramatic but the sagebrush seems to blend easier with the tile and give the kitchen a brighter look.

I really like how the darker granite looks in what basianov did. I think it would look great with a light backsplash as contrast.

if i did the black i would for sure do a lighter backsplash to contrast. i was thinking a lighter tumbled marble subway tile or something along those lines. i would for sure want a contrast because im not looking for a super dark kitchen, its just a matter of where the contrast starts i suppose, either on the countertop with the light granite or above it with the backsplash when choosing the dark

    lighter :-)

You know what's funny? I don't hate the black. In fact, I do think it looks kind of cool - probably because it has so much white in it. I agree that a light subway tile against the black would probably look very nice...

While it is easier to see, the perspective of the photo makes it hard to really visualize the impact of the granite. Perhaps if you upload another photo we can try it again? I am thinking you should stand in front of your island, and take a photo from that direction... make sure you get the floor and some of the cabinets in the background. Will be happy to do this for you again (it's fun for me).

    Cheers!

see thats why i originally loved the titanium as well, i thought the browns picked up the cabinets a little and the whites got the floor. i will try to swing by the hosue this weekend (i dont live in it yet, still being built) and see if i can get a few more pics!

I think the lighter would look better with your cabinets and I actually think it's the prettier of the two.

I took a photo from the Finished Kitchens Blog and tweaked it a bit.

I do like how the titanium black looks with a light floor and backsplash. In fact, I like it quite a bit now. If you are to go this route, I would suggest that you pick a slab with as much of the white/browns in it as possible. What do you think?!

Although the first granite is beautiful, I don't think it provides enough contrast. Go lighter. I saw someone pick something similar to #1 for white cabinets and thought it was a great choice.

I really like the picture that basianov posted with the black counters and titanium island and light backsplash and floor. Beautiful kitchen. Wonder if the perimeter in the photo is absolute black? I think it would be elegant with your chocolate brown cabinets and light floors.

hey everyone! sorry today was a very busy day, aside from going nuts over house stuff my fiancee and I are also busy planning a wedding :)

So anyways we went by the granite place today and spent some time really looking at the slabs, and when we really looked at the titanium from some different angles we saw quite a bit of silver in there and not so much white at all really. when we put the cabinet against it the silver did not play well at all with the brown to be honest. After looking at the sage brush again we decided that it would be the best way to go as it has some browns for the cabinet and is an astounding match for the floor as well.

Basianov I said it before but ill say it again, I am really grateful for the effort you have gone to in helping me with my decision, and thanks to everyone else for their help as well, I truly did not expect such a fantastic response, once its in ill post pics for sure for everyone to see! you guys are great :)

Bruno, congrats on the wedding! The sagebrush will look fantastic. I have the same color cabs and I can totally see the sagebrush working...especially with the floors. Good job!

    Bruno,
    best wishes on your wedding.
I loved the dark granite too. But seeing granite in
person is the best way to make your choice.
Good plan to go back and study them.
