Combining oak stairs with pine floors
Comments (4)What parts of the staircase are oak...treads, risers, ballusters, railing, stringer? When you look at the expanse of horizontal surfaces, it will be obvious that they are not the same wood. Not only does the robust grain pattern of oak show a difference but the way the woods take a stain is very different. You could try to minimize that difference with a medium stain throughout and pay particular attention to the different staining approaches required by each wood. Or just embrace the various aspects of both woods. It's done with pine furniture on oak floors, oak furniture on pine floors, etc. etc. With that said, it's not as noticeable due to the smaller scale and perspective of the furniture vs. the wide expanse of one dimensional flooring. Or put dark stain on the oak treads and railing that complements the dark tone of the knots in the pine planks. Would that leave enough of the oak staircase to suit your aesthetics? I prefer having the dark stain on treads and railing to minimize the obvious differences and still let the character of each wood remain in tact elsewhere regardless of color, grain, etc.....See MoreTo paint or stain my pine carpetted staircase in my barn conversion

Comments (17)If you want matte, then Rubio or a wax finish is a great place to start. Many people have gone matte and HATED IT! They didn't realize that their bare feet would leave SHINY foot prints...oh dear. Skin oils are SHINIER than matte finish...not many people know that. Please make sure you test out a matte finish (stand on, throw dust on it, get water on it...do stuff to it) and view it in front of a window (put it on the floor). Matte can be as hard to live with as a high gloss finish. Just something to remember. A "hard" finish on a soft wood is not always the answer. I know because I deal in cork. It is the softest hardwood floor in the world. It doesn't like "hard" finishes...it actually needs a soft finish that can bend and flex with the cork. If you want matte, look to the Rubio line up. The "cure time" is pretty quick. There are waxes and conversion varnishes out there that take 2 weeks (or more) to cure....which normally means NO BOOTS ON THE FLOOR during the cure time. Which means NO FURNITURE, NO RUGS, NO PETS on the floor during the air cure....See Moresomeone2010
