Makeover for combo DS/Guest room update (lots of pics, incl RAF)

Redoing this room has presented quite a challange and while it's still a work in progress, I wanted to share our progress as well as get some feedback. DS will be going away in the fall for college and so I wanted to make some changes to it that would allow it to function better as a guest room--esp. as we are expecting my SIL and her DH to visit for two weeks in May for DS's graduation and we have no spare room for guests. I also wanted to clear away some of DS's clutter (which I mostly boxed up for him to go over when he has time, or worst case over the summer) to allow space for a double bed, nightstands and better showcase his pottery creations.

Here are a couple of the before pictures:

After sampling BM Wedgewood Gray, Smoke and Paladian Plue; I finally opted for a more neutral wall color, BM Revere Pewter. I love how this color goes with the drop cloth curtains from Home Depot; though I am still waiting on the curtain rod and have yet to hang them. I bought the following mahogany pineapple bed on CL for $100 and used RAF on both it and the nightstands (which I swaped out from DD's room):

The RAF had really amazing results with the nightstands.

Before:

After:

I purchased a combination of bedding for both DS and guests. DS has a washable black duvet and sheets. I bought a black & tan toile quilt set that can be layered with the duvet for when guests visit.

Here is what the room looks like so far:

This is the version for when guests visit:

This is DS's pottery:

I want to put the bed in front on the widow and put the nightstands to either side like below, but my DS did not care for that as it really cut down his floor space so I think we will leave it with the bed towards the wall and I'll store the nightstands until May and reconfigure at that time.

This room is still in a transitional state while DS still lives at home. With configuration as-is, he needs some type of bed lighting, but there is no space for a nightstand and I don't want to put anything on the wall so shopped the house and came up with this. I could do this or perhaps a clip on lamp on the desk:

He still uses the massive desk/hutch which I plan to phase out once he leaves for college. I've been considering if I should use one a java type finish for the desk/hutch or just leave as is and hope to replace by summer with a smaller kneehole type desk. I'm not sure if I should put up the drop cloth curtains now (there is about 6-7" between wall and bed) or wait until May and do it at that time. I also would like some feedback on the lamps. I thought they'd work well fur DS studying in bed and have a more masculine touch; but one comment was they are more desk lamps and don't work so would like to know what others think before I return them. I bought at Home Decorators for $40 each so don't want to return them unless they don't work. I did test of the shades and they don't get hot.

Okay, I admit, when I saw "combo DS/Guest room", I had very low expectations and thought "I gotta see this".

Wow ,,, what an awesome makeover!! I really like what you've done with the room. Love the pineapple bed (great find) and the redo of the tables is amazing!! I usually don't like dark bedding, but I think your combo really works. I also prefer the bed under the window ,,, and I really like the task lamps (I would keep them). What finish are the curtain rods?

By the way, the pottery display is what makes this room so very special ,,, your guests will love visiting!!

Here I go showing my ignorance again! What is RAF? Love the room, btw.

I was just going to ask the same thing, Fripper.

    Wonerful update to the room!

Wow the RAF did an amazing job on the nightstands. How does your DS like the new room? What are your plans for DS' things that are currently in his desk when you phase that out? Just wondering about what he will do without a place for everyday items when he comes home on breaks and summers? Not sure a small desk will house all of the things I see on his desk/hutch?

Google is your friend, RAF is Howard Restor a Finish.

    RAF = Howard's Restore a Finish.

You've done a great job - love the way you're doing it bit by bit. Life doesn't always afford us all the space we want and compromise is the name of the game. Looks like all parties will be getting a great space.

I think the lamps work. They really are a nice counter point to the very traditional bed and tables (they look wonderful!) and add a nice 'edge'. Not loving the torchiere and think a temporary clip on light might be a better option. Since you don't need the curtains for privacy or light control now, I'd wait till you move the bed. The switcheraroo bedding is perfect. Wish there was a way to raise up that headboard so it's not completely lost behind the pillows - it's a shame to not see it. That's one of the problems with old beds and new thick mattresses - I've dealt with it too.

I am going up in the attic right now to drag down the box of ceramics that my boys made over the years - FABULOUS idea!

Thanks Happyladi and dlm, I did Google first but didn't come up with anything related to wood furniture. Wonder if I could use that on my kitchen cabinets instead of gel stain to improve their look?

jlt37869: The rod I ordered is in ORB; but looks black. I wanted it to coordinate with the black on the task lamps. Glad to hear you like them as I am trying to give the vintage pieces an edginess too it so it doesn't look old-fashioned and frumpy for DS when he is there.

fripper/ghostlyvision: Sorry I didn't explain better; RAF=Howard's Restore-A-Finish which I used along with their companion product, Howard's Feed 'n Wax to seal in the restored finish. It's a product that can be used on older furniture where the finish is still intact, but it has some surface scratches, water rings and years of dirt and dust. It cleans and perserves the existing finish and can often be done instead of stripping and refinishing furniture.

work_in_progress08: DS was fine with his existing room; though for most part he's more preoccupied these days looking forward to going to college. He did say that the bed is much more comfortable and I think he is happy that I have found a way to display his pottery (or at least the best pieces). There are some of his early attempts from 1st semester that I have boxed up and plan to talk to DS about tossing it or donating it. They seem to have unlimited access to clay and some pieces are BIG! I'm not sure yet what to do about the desk/hutch or when to phase it out; hence why I had been considering if I should gel stain it darker. My younger DD has a kneehole desk and it's great for storage so a similar one should work just fine for summer and laptop use, etc. At some point, I just would box up the trophies, but some of them he won recently up to a few weeks ago; so the time is not yet. Long term though, I feel the artwork has more meaning to have out as it shows his creativity.

dlm2000: Thanks for the support for this project. Small spaces are often a challenge to decorate as I've experienced with all my three kid's rooms; but they can still be made to look nice and comfortable. I suppose I should just sell the torchiere on CL at some point as it's more a mission style which I don't have in my house. I have a whole garage full of stuff now I need to sell on CL which I should do next. The headboard is rather low-profile which I knew when I bought it and was one of the things that attracted me to it for when it goes below the window. I even bought a low profile boxspring for this bed, but it still sits up high as the slats start a few inches higher. Bonus is, more room for underbed storage. Which I forgot to add, the more boring part of the room make over is that I added two under bed storage boxes to store both the guest bedding plus his old twin bedding which goes on the aerobed for when he gets displaced from his room.

My brother and mom may be visiting this weekend for DS's 18th birthday so I'm anxious to hear what my brother thinks of the new bed as I typically have him sleep in this room and at 6'2" I don't think he found the old twin too comfy.

Great job. I love the lamps; as mentioned above, I think they make a nice contrast with the traditional wood furniture.

    WOW...those nightstands came out amazing.

Is the black/creme quilt and shams Laura Ashley? I keep seeing a Lauran Ashely set on Overstock and thought they were nice.

always1stepbehind: Yes, they are the Laura Ashley quilt set from Overstock. If you read the feedback, the background is more tan than cream so keep that in mind if you are thinking of getting them. The quilt is sized very generously and seems to be preshrunk. I also like the pattern on the back as you may notice I folded the quilt back at the top to show both patterns.

Very nice changes! Love the wall color, the bedding is a great combo for both your DS and guests. A pretty rug in the blacks and tans would be nice in there, too.

The only thing that I don't care for is the lamps. They overpower the posts on the bed, rather than complimenting the look you are creating. Maybe one could work, but two is for sure too much.

Les: I'm a bit stumped on the rug right now--given the bed position his old one does not work at all so I will need to resell it on CL. I do want some type of rug under at least part of the rug eventually because I notice that the bed boxes can scratch the hardwood floor over time. I have a black & white one I can try temporarily. I'll see if I can dig it out. I was thinking I may wait until I move the bed, but doesn't hurt to start getting ideas now. I see your point about the lamps; what type would you suggest, assuming there will be drop cloth curtains behind the nightstands/drapes.

dlm: Did you dig our yoru DSs' pottery from the attic? Are you going to display any of it?

The RAF makeover for the nightstands is amazing! It motivated me to go out to the garage and wipe some Old English Stain all over a dresser I'm listing on CL!

I really like the pineapple bed and think it looks better in front of the window. We just rearranged DD's room and put the bed in front of the window with a small bedside dresser and she loves it.

The toile bedding looks great and I like that you can remove it when DS is home so he still has his guy space.

I love the lamps but think they're too big for the nightstands.
