rehabing bathroom-new tub & sink & tile

Hi all!

We need to rehab our bathroom. The grout keeps cracking in the shower area, the soap dish has come unstuck 3 times, if you push on the shower wall, it gives way a bit. Plumber has said he thinks the sheetrock behind the shower wall is 'punky' from water absorption. I think he is right. Plus the tub color is out of date.

So....I know we will need to get a pro in to pull out the old tub and intall a new one. My question is, how difficult is it to tear out the old tile, install new blue board, and install new tile?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions, etc

    Cay -

First off, I bet you will have more to do than just taking out the old tile, installing new green/blue board and install new tile. If you have the "push" that you described, you may need to assess/replace subfloor and/or wall studs. Water likes to find level, unfortunately, that usually means through any unshielded subfloor and/or walls. Also, any insulation you had in the wall is probably ruined.

After you find out what's up, I would highly recommend water-proofing your walls with Schluter Kerdi (waterproof membrane). It is a bit expensive, but, after install, if installed correctly, you will never have water issues behind your tile again. http://www.schluter.com/8_1_kerdi.aspx

I have done tub replacements and shower pans with the stuff, it is worry-free.

    IMHO.

Thanks for the advice. We have tiny white tiles on the floor next to the tub, and some are coming unglued. The subflooring under them is black.....so I think you are right, unfortunately.

I will check out this Schluter Kerdi membrane.

Do you know how hard it is to install tile?

    Thanks!

    IMHO= in my humble opinion.

Took me 13 months to figure that one out.

Sorry, the world is littered with 3 and 4 letter acronyms, based entirely on venue and context - makes it hard for some (me) to know who knows what when.

Anywoos, tile is relatively easy to install, especially is your walls aren't soggy from mildew and dryrot. There are many online sources you can find that can help. At least with the Schluter, you don't ever have to worry about a bad tile job causing water damage. Pick up a book online, Ebay is a good place to look. Search for "tile books" I am sure you can come up with some book that will help.

One thing I want to mention - green/blue/cement board used for backing tile installs ARE NOT WATERPROOF - these materials are considered WATER RESISTANT. There is a big difference. Only some sort of water PROOF membrane is truly water-proof. Put another way, the difference between resistant and proof is the difference between you needing to re-do your shower now or never.

    Good luck!!
