Fabric Delivery! Do these fabrics work together?

The white matelasse and blue linen fabric I ordered from Calico Corners for DD's bedroom just arrived. The matelasse is for her chair slipcover and the linen is for a chair pillow and the bottom ruffles of white canvas curtain panels.

I ordered the floral fabric several years ago to use for a duvet cover. It wasn't with me when I ordered the linen so went off memory, but the linen seems to have a touch of green and the blue in the floral fabric is more of a pure light blue.

Does the floral work with the linen and green hutch? The linen won't be used on the bed but will be nearby. Should I find another fabric to use for the duvet cover?

All other furniture will be white or off white. I think I'll need to bring more green into the room - maybe a lamp base painted Baby Turtle and a few other accents.

I don't think you need to thread match fabrics. From the pictures, the blue and the floral appear to work together, partially because you have more than one shade of blue in the floral.

    My personal opinion.

The flower fabric is "fine" but not great. The shades of blue are definately different, and the flower fabric seems dated to me. If I were going to all the hard work to make up what you are doing, I would want something that will be at the beginning of its style cycle, not at the end. Especially for a daughter who may be eager to be stylish.

If it were maybe for a seldom used room like a guest room I would probably go ahead, since it's "fine" But if it were for my DDs room I would find something more fun and up to date.

I do think the blues are noticeably different, imo.

I have to agree with Julie that the floral seems like an old wallpaper from the 60's. Okay perhaps, but not for the shabby chic little girl room you have so magnificently begun to create.

If anything, consider the floral for the back side of a duvet, and perhaps shams, and a pillow for the chair, and even as a cornice or a roman shade. But as the major focal point of the bedding, I would have to vote no, not even taking into account the color differences.

Hard to say because monitor colors are deceiving, but isn't the hutch a more green color? Not that it can't work with the blue bedding, but certainly in my head it isn't a 'match', if that is the thought.

Thanks so much for your comments. The floral fabric is a linen type embroidered fabric and is very pretty IRL, but I do agree it probably doesn't fit with my vision for the room. I think I knew this but needed to hear it from someone else!

I loved it combined with the other fabrics in her patchwork baby quilt (you can see it in the old photo of the bed), but it would probably be too busy-looking as a duvet cover, even if the colors worked. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of money on the fabric and it's a shame to not use it, but maybe I'll save it along with DD's baby bedding.

So - any ideas on what type of fabric to use for the duvet? Maybe a white background with some touches of green and blue to tie together the hutch and blue linen accents?

The blue linen works, I hope. I bought it with the intention of using it with the floral but I don't want to waste it and it's a very pretty color.

I like this Pottery Barn ruched duvet cover. Maybe I could use a blue linen accent pillow to tie in the curtains.

Would you consider chenille? I think it would be charming in the room, soft for her, and washable, which to me is key for kid's bedding. Perhaps a vintage find? I think this one could be charming:

Or even a patchwork quilt made from new chenille in the colors you want in the room. There are some sites that sell vintage chenille squares or kits, but I am guessing you could create your own.

Go to Target & buy the pink Simply Shabby Chic bedding. You can find the shabby chic stuff on ebay; some you can get cheap; other stuff is outrageous. I just got a duvet cover (twin) for $30; because the pattern isn't one of the desired ones.

I was going to ask about so much blue weeks ago but didn't. I thought I remembered reading she wanted pink. I actually like the blue fabric; you can either put it away or make a couch blanket out of it. The fabric may also be cute for a dust ruffle

I know that Les and others have a great eye, but on my monitor, while the blue may be slightly different, it really works together with the floral for the reasons forhgtv mentioned. And as for looking stylish, IMHO it really works with the other room elements. I like it better than the other options mentioned even though the ruched one would lovely.

You've shown you have great taste, and our monitors are all different, so go with what you really want to do and works for your budget. I think the fabrics could be lovely together.

    juddgirl,

On my monitor the blue in the fabrics are a match. In my opinion the floral is timeless. It may not be trendy, but it is very french country or english cottage and goes well with the quilt. I would definitely keep it as an element in the room. You have a great eye and I can't wait to see how the room turns out: )

DD just voted on several options and so far she likes a pink ruched duvet cover, similar to this one at Anthropologie: Ruched Duvet

There's a tutorial on how to make one on this website: Tutorial

I need to find something because I have my first sewing refresher course in a few weeks! I was going to start with the blue linen ruffle curtains and pillows, but now I'm not sure if I should use the blue as an accent (I can use it in my bedroom so it won't be a waste of $$).

Thank you, sujafr and forhgtv - the colors b/t the two fabrics are pretty close IRL. I have the fabric already so once the walls are painted - hopefully next week - I could lay it across the bed to see if it works. I could always make it into a duvet to work as a second bedding option.

Les - the chenille bedspread is so pretty and has the pink, blue and green colors that I want to use. She already has a duvet and I like its fullness but this might be something I could use under the duvet.

roslvr -love the shabby chic bedding! I bought some Simply Shabby Chic sheets from Target and thought they were a little rough, but the bedspreads might be softer.

Just a note about the Target Shabby Chic bedding. I'm not a huge fan of Target but about 8 - 10 years ago, I bought a Shabby Chic quilt and sham set and it ended up being the BEST bedding I'd ever had. The fabric is very soft, the weight is perfect and it washed great. Wasn't cheaply made at all. I recently changed bedding and since it's still in great condition I decided to use it inside the duvet for summer bedding. It worked out perfectly.

I just purchased This comforter on ebay; so it's used & is soft. It's very similar to the one from Target.

The blue floral fabric you have reminds me of my daughters bedding from when she was 6- that was the reverse side; ruffle & bed skirt; the main side was a larger floral. I kick myself for giving it away.

I actually found the receipt- I save everything; bought in 2003 lol The set was called Flowing ribbons by Dan River; the link below is the set she had; it also came in pink & blue. I'll see if i can find it; maybe you can use it for inspiration

Of course I can't find the blue bedding that your fabric reminds me of

I also think the blues are slightly different, but work together. I think you can achieve THE LOOK....just follow through. What was that old saying: What's old yesterday is new and in style tomorrow. :0)

Thanks so much for all of your comments. The different opinions are really helping me weigh all the options!

roselvr - love the bedding! nicole - love that saying!

I think what I may do is keep the ruffled curtains a neutral white like the ones below, along with the chair and furniture (except the green hutch). Then I can make the ruched pale pink or floral duvet with green linen pillows that complement the hutch.

I'll also make another duvet in the blue floral and a chair pillow in the either the same fabric or in the blue linen. I already have that fabric so there's no added cost, and she can alternate the bedding to change the style of her room if she wants to!

That curtain is so cute! Reminds me of the ruffles that you see on the little girl's outfits on the butt. What do they call them - rhumba pants, I think?

You're right, les! My older daughter actually had some of those when she was a little girl. Isn't it pretty?

There's a store on Etsy that sells them and other beautiful linen bedding, and there's an actual store in my area. I've been meaning to go but I'm sure I'll want to buy everything!
