CL Chrome Cocktail Table--What d'ya think?

I need to stop looking at Craigslist. Really. I'm on a furniture buying spree lately.

I saw this table earlier this week, it was $50. Today it's $25. It measures 36 x 36. I find it groovy.

I'd like to replace the glass with clear glass (any ideas how much $ that would cost? I can call a glass place)

So, any opinions? Should I just pass? Or is it a real hidden treasure?

Thanks.

I would like it better with clear glass too, but I have no idea how much it would cost.

The legs don't look that great on my monitor, especially the one near the bottom center. Could be the carpet's reflection, but it could be a paint job waiting to happen, so if you wanted to keep it chrome, you'd better look in person.

    here's another photo.

The description says good condition. And I would look at it in person.

    Nice!

    I'd do a rustic wood top. :P

I'm guessing it's in great shape--that carpet is probably the same vintage and look how good IT looks.

    I think that's a classic bee. For $25, I'd snatch it up.

I like it. Glass is pretty cheap ... Just look up a local shop and they can price it. My guess is maybe 25 bucks in PA.

My parents had these tables in the 70s. Can't tell you how many times my brother and I busted our lips open on them! Ha! Brings back memories, and yes, I would buy it!

i would pass, unless that really, really was what i was looking for... glass is cheap, but i would guess a 36x36 sqaure would be closer to 50-75$ but, more if it was tempered which i would want.... plus, i would probably want it beveled.....

I think it could be fabulous or horrible. Just depends on how you use it and where it will live in your home. Is there a specific spot you have in mind?

Also, placing the right items on the top to bring it to life could make a huge difference.

You have fantastic taste so I am sure you would make it look stellar! Just depends on if it is exactly what you are looking for.

It's you....with your decorating style, you will make it look awesome.

Not to be nosey, but aren't you starting up a design/decorating business?? That is a nice, flexible piece. If you can't use it in your home, I bet you could use it someone else's :).

if the chrome finish is bad, you could easily apply silver or aluminium leaf to it randomly, instant patina.

As for the glass top, I think it would be more upwards of 50$ at least.

I think painting the glass may be worth some thought too. I could see that table with a glossy white top.

Here is a link that might be useful: Delta glass paint

The glass will cost more than you think - it has to be thick (can't use window glass) and the edges have to at least be ground although I'd want beveled and ground. Which is not to say it won't look great and still be a bargain - but it's going to be more than $25 to get the glass - I'd say closer to $100.

I would expect the glass to cost closer to $100, it will need to be tempered. I paid about $100 to have custom glass cut for a wicker dresser that we use as a tv stand and storage.

I think it's a nice table if you have the space!

The finish doesn't look so good to me. I guess its purchase appeal would be if it seemed like a good solid construction base that you could work with.

I don't think it's up to your usual standards, my dear!
There were gazillions of these around in the seventies, and I think this one looks a little dated. And the higher glass estimates are probably right - you need a crackerjack job, because it will have to fit perfectly to look decent.

That said, if the frame really appeals, I'd think about a thick creamy white fossil stone slab for the top - one that extends a quarter inch or so above the frame.

    just to update...

I'm so busy today, I forgot about it until now.

If it's still around Monday (which it might be) I might go look.

    Thanks!

I like it. Why not call a glass place first, and see how much a 3' x 3' tempered glass table top would cost? Make sure you specify without the bug.

I'm on my iPhone so maybe I'm missing something. It if it's inset I don't think you need a beveled edge.

I think you if you are working with your biz, you could resell for more if you don't find a place in your home. You could easily stage it correctly.

I'd keep the glass unless it is damaged. In the right setting, the smoky glass could look a little mysterious, which I like. Clear glass might be just too . . .boring.

I'd have to see it in person to gauge the quality. In that era, there was nice chrome, and there was cheap shiny metal. I nursed along some cheapo shiny metal tables for many years. Remove the glass and give the thing a heft. Turn it over and look at the bottom of the legs. Hollow? Solid? With the glass removed, does it hold its shape, or does it rack and bend easily?

Like deedee said, I first thought of a glossy white top. Either glass, or a lacquered top of some kind.

I like the little bit of bling it has. We had a chrome coffee table for a while and I hated the sharp edges.
