My3dog, question about different size windows

So sorry to bother you but I have a question about scale that I hope you can help me with.

The office has the 2 84" windows that come down low to the floor. I ordered 48" plantation shutters as at that height they will block views into the office at night when we are sitting at our desks. These windows face the street.

The third window in the room is a normal 60" long. I'm not sure what size shutter to order as I'm not sure as I want it to be in scale as it relates to your valances that I'm having made. I want the windows to look balanced.

We had discussed previously the curtains being 1/3 the length of the window, is that right? If that's right then the valance on the 60" window would only hang 20", is that accurate and the shutters, to be in proportion to the other window, would have to be 32"? Which is 8" shy of 2/3 the length. Sorry to get so technical.

Forgive me, but I just want them to be in scale and not have the room look lopsided. Thanks so much.

    Hi, Bru,

Could you please post pictures of both windows? The windows in my house that have shutters, dining room and upstairs bath, have them either half-way up (DR) or 3/4 of the way up (bath).

In each case, the shutter tops align with the muntins in the windows. The windows in my house are '6 over 1' (6 panes on the top over one on the bottom).

I'm not a shutter expert, but I would also want each sized window in proportion with each other.

This is an awful picture of one of my DR windows. If this helps at all, the over all window length, from top to bottom of trim is 64". The height of the shutter is 20", and the shutter comes up to the mid-point of the glass. The WT hangs down 22" in the center, not including the tassels. I hung the rod 2" out to the side from the upper window trim and 2" above it.

I didn't use any formula to determine how far down I wanted the valance to hang, but mine generally hang down to the center of the glass in the upper window. You can barely see the horizontal muntin in the picture, but note how the bottom of the valance is pretty much in line with it, excluding the tssels. If your windows have muntins, that may be your clue as to what size shutters you want and how far down to let the valance center hang.

My3dog, thanks so much for responding. Unfortuately some animal emergencies have come up so I'll have to take the photo's of the windows and get back to you. I have the long window, but not the short.

I understand what you are saying. I'd like to put the one shutter in one of long windows so you can see it's scale and then we can look at the shorter window and decide if it it should be 1/2 or 3/4 up.

I've caught one little stray who is at the vet right now getting taken care of and will try to get a pregnant mom over the weekend. If I catch her, we'll have baby photo's to share. She's too far along to get spayed. Pray I catch her before she goes into labor.

Anyway, if I get time over the weekend I'll try to get the photo's, if not it will be next week. I'll be back in touch. Thanks again.

brutuses, I just put shutters up in my DR. Two large windows face the garden so I went half way up but high enough so you don't see the window locks from across the room. The other two windows are on the side wall, they're higher up the wall and they're smaller in size. I put full height shutters there since they face my neighbors house. As far as scale, because the smaller windows have full shutters and the larger windows have 1/2 up shutters, my scale looks fine. I'm not doing valances though. I love the clean look. I don't know if that helps or not since I think you're mostly asking about valances.

Thanks buddy, but yes, I was checking with my3dog on the size of the valance to make sure it's in scale with the shutters on the different sized windows.
