Bed has arrived! (PICS- w/ new paint) Need bedding help :)

(PIC heavy)

The bed has arrived. And it's a beast! It has the same footprint as any king size bed... but visually it's a huge. We knew it would be. Hubby LOVES it. I think I *will* love it, once I get the room together.

To remind you, here's a BEFORE. (horrid color blocking done by previous owner.)

{{gwi:1660393}}

AFTER- popcorn ceiling scraped, recessed lights and crown moulding added, new fan, paint, and baseboards... and of course BED. (Vintage Patina by Bernhardt.)

I really wanted to wait on bedding until the bed got here. I know what I want... very neutral; grays and blues. I found lovely bedding at Restoration Hardware.. but I have 2 issues w/ it. #1, it's a duvet cover... and I'm not a fan of duvets... I *do* like a fluffy look and feel, but duvets look almost messy. And I want crisp and clean. and #2- it's expensive!!! $90 for a Euro sham!!! And I need 3!

PIC of RH bedding. Also linked below.

As far as bedding- here is what I am thinking.... I want something that will be "tucked" into the panels of the bed. I am thinking 3 Euro shams across the back. Either in the RH paisley pattern or a gray quilt pattern. (RH's quilted euro shams are $70... I think I found something similar at BB&B for $50, going to look today.) Then 2 king size shams (opposite of the euro shams, either paisley or quilted.) Not sure what I want to do for coverings. I got some "delicious" :) gray sheets at Tuesday morning, so I just need a blanket or quilt and a comforter or duvet, as long as the duvet doesn't look too messy. The king duvet from RH is $300! Yikes!

So I'd like to get bedding chosen this weekend if possible... if I have to spend a small fortune at RH, so be it. But I sure would like to know I explored all my options.

After bedding, need to figure out night stands, lamps, dresser, chest, window treatments and accessories. yikes. Here's pic of the rest of the room. Look if you dare! :)

Dresser and chest that I really like- Barclay Square by Lexington.

{{gwi:1625922}}

Night stands?????? I actually like the *look* of my iron and glass ones... they just need to be about a foot taller. Have you seen anything that might work? And I'd like to get tall acrylic lamps... To be honest, what I'd like to get is a decorator... haha :)

Window treatments??? 2 panels hung close to the ceiling? Or 1 panel on each side, swept opposite the bed?

Inspiration photos...

Thank you for your thoughts :) Any and all help is appreciated. And about the canopy on the bed. I have a feeling we will take it down. I prefer it as a 4 poster bed. But hubby loves it as it, so I'm willing to work with it for now.

Oh gosh- and typical me. I post and immediately start rethinking. Why on earth did I feel the need for 5 shams??? (3 euro and 2 king.) That is a bit silly and excessive, just to be tossing on the floor on a nightly basis. I think I could get away with just 2 king size shams and a smaller pillow or two. That would actually save some serious $bucks. :)

Below is a link to the RH quilt I am looking at, in fog. The matelasse is cheaper than the quilt....

GORGEOUS bed! Wow! How about something like these silk pickstitched quilts and shams from Pottery Barn, in "Powder Blue", which is very muted and gray-ish. PB usually has a good selection of bedding in what they normally call "porcelain blue" and similar shades. This would give you a little loft and texture without being duvet-puffy.

Wow! What a difference the paint alone makes. It even makes the room look bigger now. Even though the bed is big, it doesn't extend past the windows which is a good thing. I definitely like the idea of your current table or something similar so that you don't have the heavy wood every where. I love the RH bedding, but I'll wait until you look at the one at BBB before I give my final decision.
I just had to chime in and tell you how wonderful the room looks.

I like it! You might want to consider this line of bedding that we have that is similar to your inspiration. You can get this line at other dept stores. We have the Chelsea. The comforter is very plush if you like that. If you want a thinner comforter, then I would not recommend. The Jasper and Brisbane are gorgeous in person, too.

This line is gorgeous in person. I have Euro Sham pillows, but I did not buy the shams. It comes with the standard shams.

Love the bed, love the bedding, don't love RH prices (and I don't think you get the quality either -- their quality has gone downhill in the last couple years). But if it's the one you like, go for it -- you'll have it for many years and if it makes you smile, it's worth it.

If you end up liking the BB&B ones, I just wanted to point out that they take one 20% off coupon per item and they take expired coupons. So if you can round up a bunch of coupons (maybe there's some printables on the web) you can essentially get 20% off your whole purchase there. I keep a whole section in my coupon organizer just devoted to BB&B coupons -- expired or not, they take them. Just used about 10 of them a couple weeks ago buying throw pillows.

If you can't find enough and you end up liking something there, verify that your store has the same coupon policy (all the stores around here do, but maybe it's different in other parts of the country.) If so, let me know and I can mail you some coupons, LOL! I seriously have a purseful of them!

I like that, a lot!!! BUT it's dry clean only and I have a 2 1/2 year old and a baby on the way... so machine wash is key. That's also why I am considering some type of pattern...

If I were to buy the duvet cover, matelasse coverlet, 2 matelasse king shams, and 1 lumbar sham (in paisley) it would be $615 + tax. wow. That does not include the price of the duvet.

I hear you on the machine wash! Will keep looking.

Oh yes, I know all about BB&B coupons and love them for it :)

*if* I do decide to go w/ the king duvet cover, ASSuming it tucks in nicely- where is the best place to get the king duvet- as in "best bang for my buck" ? BB&B w/ a 20% off coupon? Macy's w/ a coupon? online somewhere?

Goodness, once I buy everything, AND buy the king size pillows I'm looking at close to a.lot.of.freaking.money for what is going ON the bed. Not to mention the price of the bed, mattress etc. Whew- no one said redecorating was cheap ;)

I think I may go to RH hardware today and buy everything and just *see* how it looks. If I love it, great! If not, then I will keep looking. Bc honestly, I feel like I could spend hours looking and driving only to save a hundred bucks or so...
Or am I crazy and could I save a bunch more? And to be honest, we can afford it. I have been saving for this project for years... (I didn't want anyone to think I was going into debt over bedding;) But just because I can afford it, doesn't mean I want to!! :)

below is the gray quilt I found from BB&B... not that much different from the Matelasse coverlet from RH. Price would be 20% off w/ coupon.

    I really like the bed!

Home goods has a lot of new quilts, comforters, ect right now. And the prices are much cheaper than RH, Pottery barn, ect.

I find the best bedding prices usually on eBay, but you have to be patient. It can take a while to collect all of the pieces. Many of the items are new and all items should be marked specifically if they are not first quality.

Are you going to put a canopy top on it?

    last modified: 10 years ago

Patty- no canopy. I'm not sure we'll even keep the "wooden canopy" up. I prefer the bed as a 4 poster... but I'm letting myself get used to the actual bed in our room first.

Off to HomeGoods and RH! :)

If I were you I"d copy the inspiration room as closely as possible. It's gorgeous and yours will be too. There is a site Beso.com that gets all the overstock from high end stores and sells them sooo cheap. I just ordered RH shams for 9.99 imagine that. Each day they have a new offer but you can go to the top of the page and check out the deals to see if you can find what you want. Good luck.

Does the bed have to go on the wall between the windows, or is there room on the wall to the right?

If it has to stay there, I would think about doing a 'wall' of drapery that starts on the outside of the windows and runs all the way across. I think it will be a great balance for the bed, hung just below the crown moulding. Have the panels on each side able to be pulled to the outside to give you light, or pulled back to meet the center drapery.

The nightstands are too small, too short, and too lightweight, imo, to sit by the massive bed. I would think about one wood one, perhaps one skirted table.

Personally, if I were not going to do a canopy or hang panels on the bed frame, I would take off the top and just have posts.

If you want something tucked into the side panels, you might consider a bedspread rather than a duvet. It won't be as bulky, either.

You might consider this collection from Macy's. They have a pale blue paisley, which the reviews say is more grey than blue, and lots of things that could go with it, plus it is all on sale. Still not inexpensive, but perhaps a better quality than RH for the price.

PB makes a similar paisley in two or three patterns/ colors...I'll link one of them for you. They probably are CHEAP, but definitely less than RH. You could always do a more neutral quilt and rely on the shams for the pattern? I love the quilt feeling and look too-

The bed is a perfect fit! You are going to get a good night's sleep. lol

I have a really nice quilt from Pottery Barn which is a very light blue/gray/white color, and even though I like it, I wish I hadn't bought the color. The colors look good on "paper" or your monitor, but they're just washed out.

It's very similar to the Ralph Lauren bedding above. It simply adds NOTHING to the room, and for the price I paid, it should have added something.

I kept it anyway but I'd get something a bit more bold in color so the print will be noticeable.

Here's a link to my blue and white bedding in the guest room.

It would probably look better in your room because of the dark wood and you'd get a good contrast. For that kind of money I'd want it to "pop" just a little bit. These colors don't.

I have found some really great bedding at Target lately. Crazy, I know. But I have had silk coverlets, and some other really nice stuff. Look online and then in the store. I have found that some stores run out of some stuff. I looked in a few stores before striking gold.

Your bed is beautiful. I also have a king size 4 poster with the frame around the 4 posts. You will get used to how huge it is in no time.

I just love the bed and the new paint color. I love the bedding you picked out also but please go and see it in person to see if you love it as much since monitors are not always truthful.

    Please keep us updated.

Love the bed and paint! The space on each side of the bed is narrow but the bed is larger in scale, so maybe some tall narrow nightstands would work?

PB has quality bedding and it's probably less expensive than RH. I just got a great deal on Ralph Lauren sheets at Bloomingdales - sale prices combined with 20% off for opening an account. The 400 thread count sheets are so comfortable.

Wouldn't the duvet look better with a white goose down comforter stuffed inside? Check Ebay. I found lots of Ralph Lauren on there and get some great bargains on new bedding. Man, that's a big bed. Hope you have the large room to acommodate it! We picked out a huge iron ornamental bed years ago and I asked my grand children if they wanted it later on. No, they all say. We want stuff that looks like PotteryBarn! Enjoy it!

Beautiful bed! The room already looks a lot better than before! I agree that I would take down the rails on top.

I've seen the RH bedding in the store and thought it was beautiful. Yes, expensive, but I think it will last a long time. I have a duvet I bought at RH probably about 15 years ago. It's still in great shape.

I'm not crazy about the BBB one you linked. It's not all cotton (the back is, but not the front). I don't like sleeping under polyester, but that may just be me.

I agree with Les about the nightstands. Those are just not substantial enough. I like her idea of a wooden one and skirted table.

You have a great start and it's going to be beautiful!

Okay- let's talk bedding. I have spent hours searching (online and in stores) and I keep coming back to the RH bedding. So I went back to my store today. They were out of about half of what I needed and wanted so I ordered it (w/ free shipping) and I should have it ALL by the end of the week. Here is what I decided on.

1 King Duvet Cover in the 18th Century Medallion (in link above.) Pacific, so it does have a hint of blue.
2 Matelasse King Euro Shams in Fog (also linked above)
2 Lumbar "accent pillows" in cashmere.. one for each sham. I brought home 2 colors- a gray and an icy blue and need to choose.
1 Matelasse coverlet to act as a blanket- will be between the duvet cover and sheets. ***bought in Eucalyptus which is an icy blue color. The salesman talked me into this and I an really second guessing this for 2 reasons. #1- $179 is a LOT of money for a blanket that might not been seen. I could find a blanket at HomeGoods for $39 that would be fine. #2- *if* I stick w/ it, should I exchange it for Fog (color) so it matches the shams?? I really like the pop of color, but let's say, in the summer time, I decide to let the coverlet show more... wouldn't I want it to match the shams? Or am I trying to be too matchy-matchy??? (a problem of mine.)

Wdyt??? Solid choices? I do need to get a king, light weight duvet on order. Any recs?

I will go ahead and link the Matelasse coverlet again... *if* I keep the coverlet, should I switch to Fog? wdyt?
    thanks!

Love your new bed and your bedding choices!! I too have struggled to find new bedding for my bedroom remodel. I shopped online for hours and I kept going back to RH bedding also - finally ended up with the Italian floral duvet in Eucalyptus. I almost bought the one you did so I am very anxious to see your bed put together! I am having the same problem choosing the coordinating bedding. My gut instinct is that you should buy the matching matelasse in fog for the reason you said. If you let it show in the summer I would think you'd want it to match the shams. I bought the fog in the heirloom vintage and it's a beautiful coverlet but haven't decided if I'm going to keep it! I now have it coming in Eucalyptus because I'm not sure I like the fog with my duvet! I agree it's pricey, but the look and feel of the RH bedding is wonderful and the fact that it's machine washable sealed the deal for me!

Thanks all! I think I am going to return the Eucalyptus Matelasse and exchange it for FOG. I'm so anxious for it all to arrive and see it together!
Pricey- for sure!!! But I do adore the fact that everything is machine washable... and I know if I had issues I would have no trouble returning it to RH.

check out rh's website under their sale section...they have some FOG striped shams on clearance, if you think you don't want so much of the solid color...i love rh's things too and check out their clearance regularly if i'm looking for something---they have nice markdowns which make their prices decent!

LL Bean has wonderful duvets! They can be frontload washed and the mid weight is great year round (except maybe July/August here in RI) Just be sure where ever you get it that you get one with box stitching (no larger than 12" squares) so that the down doesn't shift alot.

Can't wait to see your room all pulled together!
