Is the width of these drapes alright?

Found some pinch pleat thermal la scala silk drapes on ebay. Pretty..:) my window is 78" wide. The total width of the curtains is 96" (48" each). Are these wide enough? I know people say go double the width but just wondering if these will really look skimpy.

Thanks!

They will be okay if you leave them open. But if you plan to close them, they will be skimpy.

Is 96" the finished width, with the pleats? If so, then the width of the actual fabric will probably be about double that.

i was planning on closing them. 96" is finished width with pleats.

If they are pinch pleated and the finished width is 48" each, they should be fine. If you were buying regular panels without the pleats sewn in, they would likely feel skimpy. Double the width is more a rule of thumb for flat panels which you want to allow to have some softness and not pull out completely flat when closed.

How good is the price? WIth all the sales Penney's has, I would check first to see if you can buy new ones in the size you want for a similar price.

les - price is $122.94 with shipping. They're Amber Gold in color. I've been looking at soo many curtains i could just scream. All the ones i like are "dry clean only" not sure how much of a pain that's going to be. I forgot about the jc penny's sale. So you think they'll be fine if i pull them shut? I may get blinds for underneath and keep them open.
I just checked jc penny. If i'm looking at the same ones I'm not loving the amber gold and the width says 41 ea not 48. they'd only be $95.98 and whatever shipping would be.

ok i think i was looking at the wrong ones.
it would be $211.99 plus shipping from jc penny. would it be better to get the 120 total width? or would that be too much bunching for a 78" window?

Did you check the outlet section and jcpenneys website?
I got my rods there for 75% off.

I just checked the drapes, isn't the width they show per panel? They show a 48", 72",120"... Eventhough they are sold per pair, the size has to be per panel. Why don't you buy one pair of 72" wide. That would be perfect for a 78" window.

If the finished width is 48" per panel, that should be fine (since they are pinch-pleated). I think 144" (72" x 2) would be too bunched since they've already included the "bunching" in the pinch pleats.

If you buy the 96" pair you will have approximately 6" of drape extending past each side of the window. Here's how it works: Subtract 3" from each side for the "return" on the drapery rod. That leaves 90". Subtract the width of your window 90" - 78" = 12". Divide that by 2 and your rod will extend 6" on either side of the window. With the 120" pair you will have 18" extending on each side of the window. If you want to hang the drapes just along the front of the rod without a return add figure 3 additional inches past each side. When pinch pleated drapes are closed there should be NO bunching at all on the rod. The pleats provide the fullness.

Maybe an easier way to think about it is this:

A pair of 96" drapes goes on a 90" rod (or shorter if you want to have an inch or so of overlap when they are closed)

    A 120" pair would go on a 114" rod.

Just decide how much you want the drapes to extend past the window to make your decision.

twor - thanks for the discount code. i'm all ready to order something now!!

i finally get it about don't need bunching if they're pinch pleated. thanks for all the explaining..

so after browsing the sales again what do you think about these in the antique linen. (SEE LINK) i'm struggling with what color curtains to buy as well.

    here's the bedding.

walls will be painted at a later date. i'm trying to find more neutral curtains.

call me silly but the widths listed, is that per panel? i would need 2 of the 48" ones?? should i go with 84 length or 95...which looks nicer? think they look too flimsy?

thanks guys for all your help!

The drapes are sold in pairs. Buy the pair that is the size that you want. You don't want to put more than one panel on each side. As far as length, it depends on the height of your window. If you have 8' ceilings most windows will take the 84" length. Sometimes the windows are higher when the ceilings are higher, but not always. Just measure you window and see where the drapes will hang. Remember that the pleated drapes hang on hooks and rings below the rod. Do you live close to a JC Penney store? If so I would really go into the store and get the advice of the people in the window coverings dept. Bring in good measurements and diagrams of your window and wall space.

I'm not sure that I completely answered this question. A 48" pair would have two 24" panels. You need to order the pair that is the width that you want for the entire window.

terriks - i feel stupid now. i looked on the page and there it is. "sold in pairs"

i was going to go with the 84". my ceilings are 8'.

anyone have thoughts about the antique linen color?

i LOVE the pinch pleat thermal la scala but really don't think i feel like messing with drycleaning. i called around this morning for prices and they weren't bad but most place told me they were at least two weeks out. I don't think i want no curtains up for that long.

I don't think I would worry about the dry cleaning issue, afterall, how often do you need to clean drapes? If you keep them vacuumed I don't think they would need cleaning very often, maybe once every few years, if that.

alright terriks now i'm drooling over the la scala ones again.

so what about the antique linen color??

i'm looking at these again. (see link)

window is 78" that's with the trim btw. so since these are a pair i would need to by the 96" because the 72" would be too short and the first number is the TOTAL width??

on ebay, the curtains i looked at said the panels were 48" each? different curtains?
