Way to detect loss of flow to prevent pump damage

I'm getting ready to install an Intelliflo VS pool pump with SunTouch controller for solar pool heating. With such a substantial investment I'd like to find out if there is a way to shut down the pump if it senses loss of flow. I recently saw a system where a Whisperflo pump was ruined because a check valve failed in the closed position and the problem was not discovered until the pump ran for a couple of days. I'd like to know how to prevent that.

From reading about the Intelliflo VF it appears that it will sense loss of flow but I've also read that it isn't the best choice if you are using solar heating.

What would you veteran pool guys suggest? Is there some capability built into the Intelliflo VS that I am not aware of? Any other solutions?

Thanks.
