Help me decorate our 'pool' room- (lots of pics)

Our living and dining room are one big room that is rectangle shaped. It is the first thing you see when you come in our front door. We just inherited a pool table (actually is is called a quarter size snooker table but looks similar to a pool table) which is in the living room. The table is 80-100 years old and originally belonged to my husbands grandfather. There is a buffet that we already had on the wall by the pool table and I am not sure how to acessorize it. Since this will now be the social hang out room when we have people over (probably mostly the husbands), I want the stuff on the buffet to be more fun then formal. One friend of mine suggested something along the lines of bar stuff, like a wine rack, icebucket, etc. I am not big on having alcohol sitting out so I would love other ideas and photos if you have any. Remember it is in the same room as our dining room table so it can't be "too" pool room type stuff, but still just fun and inviting. I would LOVE any and all ideas for this whole space. (Sorry all the pics are so big. I resized them but they still seem huge.)

Also, just so you can get an idea of other things we are planning to do in the room:

-first I want to you know that the curtains came with the house. Not exactly my style and in my opinion way too long, but my husand likes them and they were probably really expensive to have made. I am planning to take down the ruffle sheers and we are planning to put plantation shutters on the windows.

-We are going to hang a print (if we ever find one we like-aggg!) on the wall over the dining room table.

-We are considering putting in two smaller club chairs with a small table in between facing the pool table between the dining room and pool room to seperate the rooms and provide a conversation seating area (what do you think?).

Thanks!

Beautiful home! Love those floors. What are they made of?

I like the idea of having two chairs to separate the space. Plus an end table between them to set drinks on.

What about an area rug to put under the pool table to add color and to also prevent wear and tear on your carpet? A rug, chairs and end table will definitely make the room it's own.

Color is the only thing I see which is lacking in the rooms.

I'm drawing a blank on how to dress up the buffet. But I'm sure you'll get lots of advice here.

How about two dark red leather chairs between the rooms -- with a round table between them?

Switch the pretty cabinet and mirror to the front hallway -- and look for thin bookcases (like Ikea's Billy ones) for that wall -- add lots of books! And if you add bookcases with closed cabinets on the bottom -- you will have space for pool/snooker supplies and for liquor/drinks supplies too. Ikea also offers lights for the top of the bookcases -- which would work well for the whole space too.

IF there is room -- then add a thin leather-covered bench to the front window area.

I do like the curtains -- they work well on the tall windows and warm up the whole space nicely! :)

I hope you husband and his friends are more careful with the back ends of their cue sticks than mine is- the glass in that room... yikes!!

I was going to say, if you're actually going to use that pool table, you'd want to move that buffet. Pool cues take up A LOT of room. I'd nix a rug, unless it's big enough to extend at least 3 feet around that pool table. Too easy to trip on.

Can you get it refelted? That green is so jarring with your soothing color scheme. That would help it blend in a bit.

Add some seating and a nice narrow cabinet to hold the pool accessories. Could you use the buffet between the dining area and pool table area? Face it toward the dining area and put the leather chairs behind it.

We had our pool table in what is now DH's shop, and did it up as a tiki room, bamboo walls, tiki wall paper, 60's beach lighting. Obviously that wouldn't go for your room!

Pesky, I really like the idea of the buffet serving as a sofa table behind two chairs. Good idea!

Great suggestions so far and I think getting the table refelted would be helpful...they have so many beautiful colors now, so you're not stuck with a kelly green.

Play around with the cues and you will indeed see they take up a lot of room. That is why so many pool halls have items up on the walls and not in the line of the cues. You might think about chairs similar to your dining chairs on the walls in the pool room and using the buffet as a room divider with the front facing your dining room and the back facing the pool table with a leather couch or chairs on the back side of the buffet facing the pool table with small occasional tables. Maye a couple of tall palms in the corners of the pool room to flank the mirror...it would add some ambiance and soften the kelly green if you stay with that felt.

Your home is beautiful and how exciting to inherit such a wonderful piece of furniture.

great ideas. Unfortunatly there is not enough room between the two rooms to put the buffet as a sofa table. There is probably just enough room for 2 chairs but not both chairs and the buffet. We played on the table today and there is enough room to play with the buffet where it is and with the windows, walls, etc.

    keep the ideas coming...Thanks!!

I'd refelt it in a merlot or deep red color if at all possible and put some sort of sofa type table to the left when you first walk in with lamp to block the view of it with maybe leather chairs to each side and look for a large rug for under it? I think you need to just break up the fact that when you first walk it that is what you see instead of your pretty dining room set and light fixture in there rather than the masculine pool table. I'd set up the buffet in the corner as "bar area with a cute tray with glasses on it and barware. A neat wine bottle holder etc and transition it as a room that flows into the dining room so it is all an "entertaining area" and less of a manish room. A neat chair on either side of the buffet would be nice too in a fabric that you like that is not to masculine?
