New Dining Room Furniture Pics!!

Before you start looking at the pics of my new antique dining room chests, I need to tell you that this room is NOT finished. The paintings need to be rehung; the walls have to be painted. They're thick adobe bricks; the window frames and doors, etc. need to be restained whiter, so that they fade into the background; and the dining room table, chairs and built-in buffet need to be restained a mahogany color. And, finally, if it looks like my brick floors are a bit dusty and need to be washed, they do. Please overlook them ;^P

This first pic is of the "Before" dining room. Ugly chest we're forcing on (LOL!) DS is at back left; bookcase at back right is going to him, too. This view is facing towards the front foyer and study. Our built-in buffet is to the right and out of the picture here:

This next pic is the same view, but with the two new chests in place. The rug looks washed out in this pic, for some reason. The small trunk on the left is going to be moved someplace else. I love our dining room table and chairs. They were handmade/carved for us 18 years ago, back when white-washed furniture was the rage. I've wanted to restain them for many years, but couldn't until I found the right pieces to go in here with them. Well, now that I've finally found my two matching chests, I can finally do it!

{{!gwi}}">

Here's a closeup pic of the shorter chest. The painting needs to be rehung lower and centered better. This piece came with a nice protective piece of glass on it's top. We may leave it on, as this will serve as a buffet at our dinner parties. Any ideas as to the age of these pieces? Maker? The antique shop owner thinks they're from the Twenties or Thirties, but isn't sure. They're mahogany and the carving detail is beautiful on them both:

Here's the taller chest. All hardware is original, BTW. Please disregard the sloppy job I did rubbing them down with lemon oil. I obviously need to go back and rub it in more!

">

Here's a close-up of some of the carvings. Do you think these are pinecones, feathers, wheat or what?? BTW, the finish is not really shiny like this. There is no varnish on these pieces. It's just the reflection of my flash on the lemon oil. I need to get some good furniture wax. Any suggestions?

. . .as I'm hoping someone here will be able to tell me more about these pieces. This is of the feet on them. The legs are carved all the way up:

And this is what the edges on both pieces look like:

Gorgeous chests and congrats on the find! It's the start to another fabulous room. Can't wait to see it when you're finished.

Try posting on Antiques & Collectibles forum for help to ID the motifs and other details. That forum isn't as active as this one, but I eventually got some good feedback trying to identify an antique brass bed.

I'll see if I can find a bottle of what I like at the old house this afternoon...I buy it at antique stores. Great stuff when the furniture is really thirsty! I believe those are a stylized wheat stalk. I'd place them in the 20's to 30's as well given the style and the use of mahogany as well as the pull style. I'd also place them in my dining room :oP But I guess that's not an option huh?

I love the new chests if you didn't get that Lynne! So beautiful and I absolutely LOVE the dining room table and chairs.

The trunk is though...frankly crap Lynne....I'm so sorry to tell you that to your face. As an apology for having to be so frank, I'd be willing to store the ugly thing at my house...umm forever :oP heh heh heh

What a interesting and beautiful room. Love the furniture. I bet you had a blast putting the room together. If you find out the period of the funiture, please let us know. I am guessing 20-30s too.

They are really beautiful! And their beauty is enhanced all the more with the story of how your DH lovingly got them for you. I also love your french doors.

Lynn what a wonderful room and the plans you have for it sound perfect. The real joy will be the years that you and your DH share and the reminder of the love that brought you together and has kept you in each others' hearts. Caroline

DH and I just had 37 years and I never want it to end.

Beautiful pieces! I am getting a twenties vibe from them as well. Your dining room is beautiful and the Virgin painting is lovely!

I posted a reply several weeks ago about your home to a thread (Old vs. finished kitchens) anyhoo, I don't think you checked back to it (no big deal). I am going to try and post the link here b/c I was describing how your home and other southwestern homes have a sister like connection to the homes of Louisiana.

And today of all days someone posted Hays Town's personal home (Kahlanne) on here for an inspirational pick. Too funny!! His personal home doesn't reflect so much the similarities but many of the homes he built does!!

Anyway, your dining room is lovely and that painting of the Virgin Mary is just another one of those reflective touches in the style!!!

They look like they were made for your house! Great find...great husband!

Thanks for all your kind comments! I still have a long way to go in this room. It actually is/was the worst room in our home, decorating-wise. I do have high hopes, though, that once the table, chairs and built-in hutch are restained a darker color, the paintings are rehung and I get a new lamp for the buffet, it'll look much more pulled together.
Shannon, I didn't see your post to me over there, sorry! I need to go look at some of this gentleman's homes. It's fascinating to hear that our homes out here are very similar to his in Louisiana. Mine is actually very eclectically decorated, as I have paintings from Japan, China, England and India hung in here, too. The Virgin Mary painting is actually from Peru. I also have a have a game table from Syria in the living room, which opens into the dining room. And, crosses everywhere! DH says that it looks like we have a serious vampire problem in the area! Anyhoo, I'm flattered that you think my home is so interesting. Sometimes I think I drive my sweet DH a little nuts with my eclectic tastes in decorating ;^)

Beautiful AND unusual room! Love the contrast too!

Your antique chests are indeed gorgeous! And what a perfect fit for the spaces!!

Oh, I'm sooo envious. I want to live in an your house!

That room is beautiful, can't imagine how stunning it will be when you're done. I don't know a thing about the chests, except that they're perfect. I'd lean toward the carving on the front to be feathers. Do you know where they originally came from? That might be a clue as to their pedigree.

I love the chests and think the room will come together beautifully once you finish the table. For everyday polishing, I used Guardman and are happy with the results. I know you do not want to use a wax in case you ever want to refinish later. I've seen such positive results here about giving antique furniture a good clean with mineral spirits and the using Restore-a-finish as needed. I've been thinking of doing it on my mahogany dining set. I find the carved parts look very dark (as yours do) and I'm curious how it would turn out. As for the style, the legs looks like a Duncan Phyfe style, though the feet look like lion's feet. Very nice!

Lynn, I think I may be in love with your husband. Don't forget. I only got a Kitchenaid.

Those are beautiful. Very very nice.

Lynn, you are so funny! First you tell us everything that is wrong with the room before you post your pictures. I sure hope you don't do job interviews that way. hehe

Your chests look fabulous... such pretty pieces. It's easy to see why you wanted them so much. Bless your DH for getting them for you. What a lovely surprise.

I guess your weather is pretty hot? No gutters? And I see you going for a cooler color combination?

They are lovely Lynn and complement the room very well. Congrats on 25 together.

So do I get the chest? :oP

Lynne your eclectic style is part of what makes the home so great. The structure is pretty fab on it's own...but your style really gives it the extra posh to make it wonderful. (I'm saying this to suck up for that little trunk) :oP (Ok and the place is rather nifty keen too) :OP

I love your house! And those pieces are perfect for your room. What a find! And you have a wonderful dh that would surprise you like that. Congratulations on 25 years, too.

That area of the country is my second favorite. We are planning a trip that way probably summer of 09'. We have a new travel trailer and plan on taking our time and really enjoying that part of the country.
