attn. tile -glass tile around existing hood or under the hood

I have not visited for a long time! I have one small project left to do in our kitchen. We have a stainless steel hood that we like and seems to be working properly. The two options for our glass tile installation are:

Install the glass tile around the existing hood without taking the hood off.

Take the hood down and install the glass tile over the entire 4 feet x 3 1/2 feet area and then reinstall the hood.

We are leaning toward option #2 since if the hood has to be replaced at some point then we can do so without worry. It will cost $300 more for option #2

Help us decide which to do.

option #2 absolutely--it will be money well spent and well worth it in the long run for the reason you described (we did the same BTW).

Cat Mom, I think you have helped me before and now almost three years later here we are! Can you post a photo of your tile and hood? Thanks

I agree with cat mom - it is easier, less time consuming, and produces fewer waste tiles.

    Good luck!

Oh, how funny! I lurk more than I post these days (I still love seeing all the wonderful finished kitchens!), but I'm still around. Like a bad penny I guess, I just keep turning up....LOL

Here are a few pics for you:

Catmom-- someone was just asking about a tile backsplash exactly like yours, about a week or two ago!! I wish I could remember which thread it was!!!

WOW, how beautiful! I don't think I ever saw your finished kitchen. My kitchen is a small remodel. I have had the hood for about 12 years. I redid several other things in the kitchen about three years ago and now I want to tile. Your glass tile is similar to the one I have chosen except a different color. I will put ours in vertically also. Thanks for your help.

Bill, let me know when you remember....I'll try to keep lurking tonight!

zinfanatic--DH said it might be a wash with regards to the price difference between taking the hood down and tiling the enitre space vs tiling around the hood (making all the cuts in the tile to fit around the hood ups the labor cost).

Also, if you like Zin, we've had Ravenswood Old Vines--Lodi, 7 Deadly Zins, and Bramblewood Old Vines recently. We thought all 3 were all pretty nice (Bramblewood had strong chocolate overtones if you like that!). We also had Gnarly Head (?) last night at my BIL's home and that was neat, too.

    Catmom--

    here it is:

Here is a link that might be useful: VERY close, but not exact

I say tile underneath. We tiled around our hood in the last house and i didn't properly caulk the top edge (under the hood).... and grease eventually dripped behind the transparent glass tiles. Gross.

It is a similar look Bill, with the tile running vertically. Beautiful tile and color(s) BTW. It appears to be a stone, or an opaque or translucent glass tile. Those tiles are all the same size/thickness.

Ours is Artistic Tile Opera Glass in the Stillato pattern mosaic--clear glass painted with the color on the backs, varying tile widths/lengths.

I love a lot of those skinny tile looks--oofasis' backsplash, with the tile wrapping around her window is one of my favorites!
