DIY upholstered headboard for guest room

I posted last week about the progress of my guest room, spurred on by a visit by my MIL. I decided that I really wanted to headboard before she arrives (later on today!) so I made this one yesterday:

The materials I used were half inch plywood that I had cut to size at Lowes. Two twin sized foam mattress pads (much less expensive than foam from the fabric store), a table cloth (good source of large pieces of inexpensive fabric), batting and a covered button kit.

What a great project! I also love the bird prints. I've been looking for illustrations just like this!

I love it! She might not want to leave.

Did you drill holes in the wood for the buttons?

LOVE IT!!! It appears to be mounted directly to the wall. It is a great look. Very high end!!

Yes, I drilled holes in the plywood, and used regular buttons on the back to hold the cord in place that I attached the buttons with. I forgot to mention that the entire project cost less than $50.

Wow! it is gorgeous, how is it attached to the wall? how far down behind the bed does it go?
Where did you get the bird prints?
If she doesn't like it, you need to find a new MIL! LOL

My oh, that is just stunning. I agree your MIL might not want to leave! She's a lucky lady. I can't believe you whipped that out in a day.

Whew,,,,you obviously know what folks pay for custom headboards , not at all as nice as this....you are amazing.

I love seeing the talent on this forum. I couldn't ever replicate the projects that I see...but you know it is just nice to see others who are able to do it and enjoy . c

Boy! That's what I call clever!

    It's wonderful.

Wow, you are so talented, it's beautiful! I LOVE those lamps!

I looked all over the place for the right lamps, and found those at Walmart of all places. That's also where I bought the foam pads and table cloth that I used to cover the headboard. I was going to hang the headboard on the wall, but decided against it because I didn't want to put big holes in the wall. So I just attached one of the scrap pieces of plywood left over after the headboard was cut and screwed it to the bottom to bring it up to the right height behind the bed. With the bed shoved against it it is very secure. I think that I will get some more of the tablecloths to make drapes for the windows. I need really long drapes, and I think that the tablecloths come in a 104 inch long size.

Terriks you did a great job. I've used foam bed toppers and table clothes before because of they're a great source for low cost decor. It looks awesome. I bet your MIL will be very impressed. I am!

I have wanted to do a upholstered headboard for our bedroom for literally years now. I have never been able to get my hubby on board because he will not attach it to the wall. Now I know what to do, thanks to you!
    Gorgeous room!
