Need advice..I'm reading our granite/cabinet color choice is bad,

First, it isn't too late to change our granite choice, so at least that is good.

Our plan is to paint our honey oak kitchen cabinets white and top with Verde Butterfly.

Now I just found a website, The Rock Blog, and the expert opinion I read there is that Verde Butterfly and white cabinets aren't a very good combination. He seems to suggest a warmer stone with more brown/cream tones. This is exactly opposite of what I read on the Stonemark site...it said Verde Butterfly would look great with white cabinets. (We are getting our granite from Stonemark/Home Depot).

This is ironic in a way because our first plan (a year ago?) was to do something like Santa Cecelia with a creamy cabinet.

The only given is that the cabinets will be painted some color. They are structurally sound and we just don't have it in the budget to replace them. (Darn it.) We have two 16' runs of parallel cabinets/appliances. (corridor, or galley) kitchen with stainless appliances. We were planning on hardwood flooring with this look.

I almost hope all my previous posts have dated themselves off the board...we have been trying to pull this together for well over a year and I'm almost embarrassed to ask yet another question. It took us that long to finally decide to do granite vs. another material.

I would appreciate your opinions here.....I'm really concerned we are making a huge mistake, but it isn't too late to change.

There are some beautiful kitchens with while cabinets and VB or ubatuba granite in the finished kitchens blog. I think it is a beautiful combination. Look in the FKB and see the many kitchens with this combo. Just click on th VB granites and see!

obviously you like the combination so why would you care what some website says? many people do soapstone or black absolute with white cabs which provides the same contrast and it looks very striking and classic. the only huge mistake is designing a kitchen based on what others think it should look like. in the end you'll never be happy. GL!

We had oak cabinets and painted them. We went with a Ben Moore color called Mayonnaise (creamy almost white, as you might imagine). It was a very nice color to live with and blended well with pretty much anything I would have wanted to do. I happen to like a dark countertop with light cabinets, but I think it is true, that this is a personal decision based on your tastes.

We had Uba Tuba countertops that looked great with the cabinets (Uba Tuba happens to be the least expensive granite you can get and when we did a cosmetic renovation we chose them for that reason... I got all of the countertops - materials and installation - for $1500, which at the time was just slightly more than paying for laminate to be installed.)

I digress... I agree with a previous poster about Soapstone looking very nice with white cabinets. A lot of people do honed Absolute Black to get that look, but I think Honed Jet Mist is a closer match. My neighbor has honed Uba Tuba which looks pretty good too (takes some of the green out of it).

My parents have a medium beige with brown flecks with their white cabinets. They have a backsplash with a lot of different colors and patterns, so in their case I think the more bland countertop choice was a good idea to allow their backsplash to pop.

Maybe you should paint the cabinets first and then choose the countertops, because you could always bring home little samples to try to get an idea before committing.

    Best of luck!

If kellog's beautiful kitchen doesn't convince you to stop reading :) Nothing will.

In decorating, there are 100 opinions and they're all different. Get the granite you like and enjoy it!

And if you're really reading opinions...heck granite is out silly...you need to go with saphire or ruby chip countertops...it's the newest thing! heh heh

Uh, doesn't white go with everything? It seems to me that verde butterfly not going with white or cream cabinets is just someone's opinion. Someone's BAD opinion!

I read that same blog for a while when contemplating my granite choice. He has some very strong opinions about color. They are his opinions. They are not yours. (He never mentioned blue granite color choices so I never worried about what he had to say.) He also doesn't know your layout or the quality of light in your kitchen. Take home samples of each, put them in your kitchen right next to each other, stare at the colors, view them in all sorts of light over a week, meditate on the colors, ask everyone who sets foot in your house what they think, contemplate the colors, and don't rely on just one opinion.

Didn't I read on this forum a week or two ago that some decorator or other said granite is O-U-T anyway? You can't win if you rely on the opinions of others. There are as many opinions as there are styles, and at the rate styles change you'd never get done! Trust your own judgment and get the granite you want. You'll love it.

i think it is a great combo. i'd have considered it myself, but needed a lighter granite.

That is so funny that you posted this because I am having cabinet color issues. The one thing that I know is that I love the Verde Butterfly and I matched it with my soft white/brown glaze cabinets and the Cherry/bay stain cabinets and it looked BEAUTIFUL with both.

Its what YOU like that matters

Our neighbors just installed Verde Butterfly on their new white cabinets. It looks wonderful.

The author of the Rock Blog won't be paying for or living in YOUR kitchen. You are. So pick what YOU like.

Opinions are like ..... and everyone has one.

If you're going to believe and act on a stranger's opinion, I'd much rather trust the opiners on GW Vs a business site. Believe the ones that you trust the most. ;)

Who cares what anybody else thinks? These people who set themselves up as pedantic tastmakers - what nerve! It's YOUR house and your kitchen and your taste. Bah! Do what you love and what makes you happy. Your color combination sounds beautiful to me. Green and white? What could be bad?

Thanks for the replies...I love this forum. Great humor, too, just when I needed it.

This morning we talked and had an enlightenment. I had to do some pretty slick talking. Husband just came in and saw me on the forum...he reads/enjoys it, too, and said, "Well, are you going to tell them you're finally getting your way?"

In reality, our cabinets are contractor grade, cheap cabinets which are about 17 years old. Some of the doors have warped. Husband had actually purchased 3 additional oak cabinets and tried to match the doors, etc, as best he could, but they don't match. We would have used them in this galley kitchen...2 rows of cabinets parallel to each other...and not matching at that. And, even painted, they still wouldn't match. We were going to top them off with expensive granite. We decided it just didn't make sense to do that....we don't plan on moving any time soon, but, still, I don't think it would add to the value of our home.

So. We are going stretch a little and replace those cabinets with ones we love. We found some Kraftmaid cherry cabinets in a shaker style we really like with a nutmeg or ginger glaze (still contemplating which one) and it won't break the bank.

Now we are back to the countertops...we're going to worry about those first, and finally the flooring. Back to the granite search next.

It's been a long day....but the sun was shining in Indiana... I'm turning 60 this month! We decided this would be a gift to us...(he will be 60 next year) a nice, new kitchen we both love. I didn't want that darned Tiffany celebration ring anyway. :)
