Please critique these bathroom choices.

Forgive the packing materials! I had only one chance to take shots of the vanity when we made sure there was no damage. It is again wrapped up and taped up for protection from dust until it can be installed.

There are a couple things you should know. First, and I am hoping it isnÂt too horribly apparent, but this is our seriously low-budget bathroom. The big things, the vanity, claw-foot tub, and the granite can not change. The shower curtain, mirror, finish on mirror, hardware, and proposed paint color are all open for improvement and suggestions.

Oh, and feel free to give it to me straight. IÂd rather hear it now than when so-and-so comes to visit! :OD

----

Picture one:

Granite hunk, a black with copper and blue flecks, perched on an expresso vanity, antique brass hardware. Mirror is standing up beside

A corner of the curtain sitting on top

Picture two:

Again, the vanity, mirror, the blue-green shower curtain, plus the cream floor tile, a planter I picked up for a spider plant (the plant loves the bathroom), and the granite chunk is laying down on the ground. The rest is just packing material laying/flopping around.

The paint color IÂm and thinking about is 4th down on the chip, BM Greyhound.

That rusty thing is one of the claw feet. It obviously wonÂt stay rust. :O) Thinking I should make it a hammered bronze color??

Thank you for any feedback. I really trust and appreciate everyone's opinions.

yummy! I love your choices. I imagine it will feel quite luxurious and classic despite your budget. I think it's a great start! I am wondering what you're planning for the window treatment though and whether more color will be needed in art work etc.

I think it looks great too. Good choices. The only part I wasn't sure about was the paint tint. I know you said you were going with the 4th one down, but not sure how big your bathroom is - so maybe 3rd down would work too. Either way, it looks good.

I like all of your selections! Maybe I just don't know anything, but nothing comes across looking cheap IMO!

What color are you doing the outside of the tub? The foot actually looks nice as is--it has that estate-vibe going for it.

When are the pieces going to be installed? I can't wait to see it!

Why grey paint in a gold/coppery room?

    and nothing but the truth...
Does not look cheap in any way! I love it. Love it all.
I like the tub as is too, but have found sometimes when using vintage/distressed pieces I am asked "so when are you going to finish that piece?" They just don't get it, IMHO.
Maybe just have the interior of the tub finished in the bronze with an over-the-top glam faucet?

i'm not sure if i'm seeing the colors accurately, but i would probably warm up the paint alittle bit......looks abit too gray to me. otherwise, looks nice!

Nothing is coming across as 'cheap' to my eye and I think you've made some great choices. But I do echo the paint concerns - that's the one part that's not workin' for me - why gray?

Thanks for all of the feedback! I am relieved that it is going in the right direction. The bathroom wasn't fully planned when I started, I just let it grow on its own.

Htnspz, there is a 3 X 4 window, but I haven't a clue what to put on it. It is right next to the tub so I don't think that I want fabric next to the curtain.

Christy, the bathroom is a decent size, but still small enough that a pair of sconces and a chandy should be able to make it bright.

Tomorrow, the outside? The inside is white. Ummm... I haven't thought about the outside. The plan WAS to have a white vanity/white tub, but then we ran across an awesome deal on the expresso. Would you do white? Gold? Blue-green?

DeeDee, I like the age too, but you are right, I'll get questions. With condensation, the rust probably needs to be primed and painted so it won't make those red stains on the tile.

Busy & DLM, the paint looks gray?? I keep seeing it as a blue-green. The curtain is really difficult because it has a slight color shift from gray blue to a sagey green depending on the angle, I wish the camera could capture it. It is really beautiful in person, but it makes paint colors really difficult.

These are a couple of the other shots. One shows golds, the other BM Sea Pine. Do you think the Sea Pine works better? I am hoping the walls to be a touch darker and a wee-bit grayer than the curtain.

Funny, I wondered about the color but figured you chose it for a reason. Good to see others were seeing same thing as me. I worry the 4th is too dark. Shade I figured was ok because computers don't always get color right. I too wondered if the 3rd might be better but you know how dark the room can do. As for tub, I am a bit confused. I just assumed the tub would be white in and out and the feet where going to have the other finish. I think most, especially you know who as you mentioned, expect to see a white outside a clawfoot tub even if it is stylish to do a color. I would stay white.

I love to see "cheap" rooms that don't look cheap. Yours looks like you spent a fortune. I would be wondering where you got the cash- lol!

    Been digging!

I dug this out from underneath a mountain of moving boxes in the sun porch. It is grubby with dust and needs many more crystals, but how would it look?

    Yea/Nay?

    I like the chandy!

I suppose you can do the outside of the tub white and if would look just fine. However, I do like the interest created when the outside is a different color. It also won't show dirt as easily if it's another color.

I just googled "clawfoot tub" and selected images and found these. There is also a link for a great looking version that might look good with your colors...just scroll down a little.

Here is a link that might be useful: clawfoot tub--tan exterior

Have you looked at Wythe Blue? It's a perfect blue/green IMO and the swatch doesn't do it justice. Especially next to the other colors -- it looks green but on the wall it's anything but.

I love the other choices and I would leave the rusty claw feet!

Wow, thanks for the pictures, Tomorrow. Those are really beautiful! Pics like that really mess with my mind because they make me want to incorporate elements from all of them. :O)

Megsy, I pulled out Wythe Blue. You are right, it does look green on the chip. It is a beautiful color, but the curtain keeps curtain color changing depending on the direction I view it. Which is more right? Matching it to the blue, the green, or somewhere between?

    Hi Paint Chips.

I seldom use off-the-shelf paint colors, so I don't even have that paint strip to look at & see how warm or cool it might be, but on my monitor, it doesn't look as warm as it could be. I seem to be one of the few people who like dead-neutral grays, but let's face it, they don't do you any favors when you look in the mirror, so you might want to go warmer than you might in another room.

Overall, regerdless of how little money you've got to spend, the look you've put together is a very handsome one, elegant without being fancy, classic without being dull. The finish on the vanity, the mirror, the curtain all look good, but I'm another who likes the corroded look of the tub foot just as it is. And as far as rust stains on the floor go, a few coats of matte sealant should take tcare of that issue.

Sure, if you leave it like that, some people will ask when you're going to refinish the tub, the same way some people ask when I'm going to fix the soft-ball sized holes in my living room rug, or bind the raveled edges where I cut it in two with an electric carving knife to make it fit the tiny space in my old aprtment. And you know what I tell those people? "Never." Those that get it, get it; those that don't, never will, so I don't waste any time trying to bring them up to speed. Elsie DeWolfe virtually invented the the profession of interior decorator a hundred years ago, but one of the embroidered sayings on the cushions in her drawing room is just as valid today as it was then: "Never complain, Never explain". If your friends don't get that rusty tub, oh, well. It's their loss.

Anyway, of all the stuff you've assembled, the only thing that seems to be off-key is that planter. Against the background of the rest of your choices--all very elegant--this sticks out like a sore thumb. It's trying way too hard. Stick with a plain white porcelain version--no fancy-schmancy fake-Rococo ornament & no gold--or go for contrast with a plain terra cota pot, preferably one with a little bit of age to it. Like the patina on the tub foot, the contrast is what will make it work.

    Regards,
    Magnaverde.

You have assembled a lovely collection that play nicely together. I wonder if you have considered a warm copper color on the walls? If you look at the paint swatch that has the sea pine, look up the strip and see the effect the rusty copper colors have. They seem to bring out the pattern in the curtain, the mirror seems to have a more coppery than gold tone about it, and you mentioned copper flecks in the granite.

might like the sea pine!... really hard to tell on screen--worth buying a sample can tho. also like the 3rd one down on the top strip in the picture directly above the sea pine pic...that might be too neutral for you??
also think you should consider keeping the feet rusty! and dust off that chandy, add the other crystals and hang it! will look great with everything!

I love all of it, especially the vanity and chandelier. Because of our stupid code, I wasn't allowed to put a chandelier in the bathroom.

I vote for a nice creamy color like in Tommorrow's 1st pic. BM Manchester Tan?

Here's a pic of BM Natural cream in the foreground and Gray wisp in the background. Of course it looks terrible b/c it's unfinished and there's no trim. The ceiling color is BM simply white.

Really great elements you got going on there so far. I like the tub leg as is too, but know what you mean about the rust, in which case, maybe do the chandy and tub legs in a color to match the mirror. Hard to tell about the colors, but I like the sage/mushroomy colors.

Magnaverde, thank you for your insight on my room. Your opinion carries a lot of weight. After your comment on the planter, I can see that it is a lesson I still learning. Things like that say "fun" to me. There are a couple of clay pots aging nicely outside that I'll try out. The authenticity of your apartment is something I really admire.

Les, I thought about the copper too, but thought that I would run into some major problems with metal finshes. I am not too hot on the orb finish on a black counter, but that would have looked nice with copper.

Busybee, LOL, I'm really glad that you think that is the way to go! I wasn't looking forward to giving the chandy a good polish. Less work = Patina. I like it! :OD

I absolutely love what you have so far! With all the elements, I see ivory paint working well with a vintage vibe! Sorry, I don't see a blue green in there! Pratt & Lambert has a really pretty warm ivory. And, yes, keep the rusty feet!

I see only one room in the pics above where rusty claw feet and a dusty chandy might look good (in vampiress's pic 2). In the bathroom I am envisioning you are doing, I think rusty feet would look like rusty feet you'll get around to some day, especially with a glammy chandy. What is the charm in rust? You're going to have a gorgeous, glamorous bathroom with rusty feet and a dusty chandelier?

In our first house - in 1970 - we had a clawfoot tub. The POs had painted the bathroom walls pale pink and the outside of the tub a deep raspberry-ish pink, all the way down to the clawfeet. The inside of the tub and other fixtures were white, as were the floor and painted woodwork. It was a very pretty, calm bathroom, not glam or girly at all even though it was pink. We left it that way.

Anyway, in your bathroom, I think you'd be glad you put the effort into refinishing the feet and chandy. As they are, I think they would look like oversights with the other beautiful elements in the room. I'd use steel wool and spray paint on them at the least.

PPS, sorry about the post lag. I didn't mean to miss you! Thanks for more pics. There are some great ideas here for anyone working with clawfoot tubs.

Can't you switch out your light fixtures now? I have to be careful about certain rooms because DH is very tall. A little funny, he likes the ones with crystals because they sweep his head as a warning before he can give it an all-out konk! :O) Luckily, this one is so small that it fits anywhere.

Vampire, thank you for the posting those pictures. In the first one, there is a swing arm desk lamp. How cool is that! I love when rooms defy expectations. From the posts of yours that I have noticed on other threads I get the feeling that you are probably good at putting things together in novel ways.

KMCG, Ohh, I keep hearing about that color! I had thought about matching to the tile, but the room will be off of SW Ivorie so I'm trying to think of this an opportunity to experiment.

Would you believe I've never had a blue-green?! I don't think I want to go out of this world without trying every color. :O)

Sherry, I think the charm in rust/old/dust is buried in authenticity. I'm really glad there are two points of view here because it will always leave the option to refinish open for the future.

Have you seen Magnaverde's apartment? If not, it is well worth a search. It is a stunning place with a too-sophisticated-to-care vibe. He gives the ordinary a value that makes me appreciate even the most trivial bits of life.

It seems like your original paint sample is coming across as gray on some monitors, but if it's really a blue/green, then I think you're on the right track. I might do a shade lighter than the 4th one down. Where did you order the vanity from? I'd love to see a picture of the whole thing if they have one online.

Everything you've picked looks beautiful not cheap at all.

Your chandelier will add a beautiful touch!

I love, love Magnaverde's idea of the terra cota planter. I liked the one you have but that's why he's awesome Magnaverde and I'm not. :)

I like your 4th chip down and the sea pine color. I'd like to see how a copper color looks against your stuff.

MSRose, the vanity came from Big Lots ($199). It has all the tilt-outs and the center doors have some nice detail to them. The shower curtain came from Big Lots too.

I didn't get a chance to take a full shot, but I did take pictures of the box.

This model didn't come with a top, but I already bought granite from CL that was salvaged from a local celeb's house. How fun is that! :OD I keep wondering if I can slide that into the family tour.

Shee, isn't that the truth! I wonder how long it would take him impart his knowledge to me? Probably forever, but I would love to learn.

That terra cota planter is already inside waiting to be fitted with the plant. :O)

I love Big Lots! I've been buying quite a bit from them. As long as your assembly is good, it will look much more expensive.

paint_chips - That's unbelievable! The vanity is gorgeous and to know it came from Big Lots and was only $199. The shower curtain is also very expensive looking and I would have never guessed that's where you found it. I think you done good!

Great shopping indeed. Once again...I am to the left of center, but I like that planter you have pictured...I think it complements your selections. I am really looking forward to seeing your finished bath...think it will be awesome!!!
