one more pillow for my chair. please :)

ok guys, i'm almost done with my pillow search.

I'm taking the pillow i bought for this chair back . it was burgundy and just too big.

decorpas really toughed it out with me on my last pillow thread and i know she thinks i should probably stay away from this pattern (see below) because of my other furniture. i still really like the pillow though.......... and the chair is across the room. and the other furniture is really dark. the pattern doesn't stick out like "tadaa!"

**notes: walls will eventually be painted

jaquard pillow - i think it would look good with some tassles added.

i really like love these as well but think i'm getting even farther off....... sorry i can't copy their pics!

i really don't care for stripes and plaid isn't even an option.

Really want to go for an old world/traditional/elegant (as terriks i believe put it in another thread) for this room. but i know i'm not the best with this decorating/coordinating thing so yet again i'm asking for help.

Thanks in advance everyone.

that jacquard pillow sure seems perfect; don't even add tassles !!

I don't mind the pattern of the pillow, but it appears to be black and RED and gold, whereas your furniture appears to have more of a rusty red to it. No tassels, imo, on that - the pillow would be enough on the chair.

How about this one from Target? Seems like it is the style you want, and the colors look about right:

    wildflower pillow

Let me suggest something, tho. I know budget is an issue (just as it is for most of us, for sure for me!) Before you worry about a pillow on the chair, I would get the room painted, get some lamps in the space that convey that sense of old world elegance that you want. Find some artwork for the walls ( you can get inexpensive frames and frame calendar pages or prints that you love from places like Hobby Lobby. Look for some end tables that are more substantial for either end of the couch (Craigslist you know about, the Salvation Army if you have one nearby, garage sales, etc). Find a new home for the existing floor lamp, which is way too modern for the look you are trying to create.

The paint alone will change the feeling of the room MUCH more than a pillow on that chair.

The other thing is, take your time. Live in the space as it is, look through magazines and other online decorating sites for pix of rooms that have the feeling you want to create. The best rooms seem to be put together over time, and you will be happier if you don't just pick out what can be found right now, and perhaps settle for something that isn't really the right choice for the room.

Alright, I guess I should address the paint issue. The house we built is a modular home. Modular's are built in a in sections in a factory and then shipped in pieces where onsite they button everything up. They can build you anything you want in a modular. We drew the floor plans for our house. After your house is built over time stress cracks can show up. Keep in mind it traveled to get to the site. When the house was first buttoned up there was only 2 cracks in that I counted. After weeks of sitting and the heat was finally turned on (this was over the winter months) more cracks appeared. Before we moved into our house they all were taken care of but it's common in these houses that cracks can show up to about a year. So far so good. Our house was finished in March. Before next March, if any cracks show up the builder will be back to take care of them...before I paint.

I know there's lots of controversy on these types of houses. Usually I get the negatives from people who don't know what they're talking about. My house has a full basement and full walk up stairs attic. My house never had wheels on it and doesn't have a title. This isnt' the company we went with but if anyone wants to see a slideshow of how they're put together you can check out this link. http://www.pbsmodular.com/Setting_Home.htm

So I've been playing it off as 'I don't know what color to pick.' Which is partially true but the main reason is the cracks possibly showing back up. I'm not looking for opinions about stick built vs. modular I just wanted to explain why my whole house is white. :)

Les - I did see that wildflower pillow from target in person and like it but ended up buying the other burgundy one instead. It's actually the same size as the one i bought that i'm taking back. ...pretty big. Colors are right though.

Still looking for art work. Not sure what i'm looking for but haven't seen anything that's caught my eye.

The end table I have that's inbetween the couch and loveseat, do you think they're be more room for something substantial? I was afraid of getting too bulky since the furniture already is. Maybe i'm misunderstanding what substantial means. Here's the table. Got it a month or so ago at a flee market type place. Do you really think There should be a table on the other side of the sofa near the entertainment stand? Didn't think there was enough room there. Maybe if i bought a different table for between the sofa and loveseat i could put the round table i currently have at the other end of the couch?
Here's a close up of the table.
    {{gwi:1691683}}

My floor lamp needs to stay for awhile. Wedding present from my sister and brother in law that i picked out. (silly me. picked it before our house was up and i knew what was going in the rooms) I've had it less than a year. I know it isn't meshing well with the overall look in the room.

I think I do need a table lamp for the round one. That was going to be my next thing.

I am trying to live in the house. I know, I know.. i've been pillow nutz as of late. I definitely should live in it awhile before I start buying artwork and stuff for on the walls. I carry my camera everywhere I go so I'll probably be taking some pics.

How about adding a throw on the back of the chair instead of a pillow (or both)?
Don't worry about being "pillow nutz". I get the same way about one stupid thing and my DH can't understand it. I get obsessed :) I have to get it done/decorated or I can't sleep.

mlraff, I thought the same thing about a throw. I actually have one I'm not using that I am sending to her...so glad this idea has been seconded:-) It's a cranberry red color.

I promise to get it in the mail ASAP as I can see the need is now imminent. I have been wrapped up with work, so I'm sorry about that.

Modular homes are actually very cutting edge and have a lot of positives about them. I am sorry if you hear negative things, but I think those misconceptions come from an outdated idea of what modular home means. The next time anyone asks you about it, you can liken it to those Sears Craftsman kits they used to send out:-) Those are valued and revered now. Mass production that doesn't have to take place on location saves a lot of money-- and that's a good thing.

You are waiting for the house to settle, and then they will come back and do their one year touch ups? Then you can paint? Great-- You will be prepared! I don't know if you've been to the galleries here or not, but Oceanna has done a great job of posting inspiration pictures that are really helpful with paint ideas, among other things.

If I get a second, I'll take a pic of the throw and post it! And you know, if you like that pillow, get it! You know what you like and what makes you feel good. That is the important thing about decorating your room.

shee, here's an article on modular homes that I thought you might be interested in: I'm quoting part of it here:

'Green' has found an unusual mate in the housing market.

While they may seem like an odd couple, prefabricated housing -- in which most of a home's structure is pre-built in a factory then assembled on-site -- is an oddly natural partner for the green movement. Prefab or modular homes can be produced and erected more efficiently, consume less energy and generate less waste than the construction of conventional homes.

The surprising thing is that today's prefab housing is also beautiful, customizable and designed to fit naturally into its surroundings.

Here is a link that might be useful: marriage of prefab and sustainability

If the walls are made of drywall, it doesn't matter how it was constructed. All houses settle, and nail pops and (possibly) cracks appear. But you can still paint the rooms now.

And in fact, applying primer and two coats of paint will help you identify any flaws that the "builder's white" paint is hiding. Once the builder returns and fixes the walls, you get out the left over paint and primer and re-do that area of wall.

I want to second what Les said. Pin down the big stuff first. You are all over the map with your posts asking opinions about picture frames and pillows. Save the money and use it for drapes.

mlraff - sounds like you get what i'm talking about. Whatever i decide to tackle bugs me until i feel that it's 'right'. Happen to mention that I was taking that burgundy pillow back and DH was like,"i like that pillow. it looks nice." hahaa i'm still taking it back.

decorpas - I'll try the throw and see how that works on the chair. Les is right about the pillow being more red. I think it would be alright with my furniture but i have that lamp sitting on that table beside it (it's definitely burgundy) and it's going clash. Even more if i put that throw on the back of the chair. *sigh*

Thanks for posting that about the modulars. I guess I get somewhat defensive about the whole topic. I don't live in a huge $500,000 house like some of the homes on here. Modulars are common around my area but there are some people that still talk horrible about them. And again, if someone's going to talk smack it would be nice if you really knew the facts first. Oh well, those people don't have to live at my house and I'm not at theirs!

graywings - i understand what you and Les are saying and have thought about just the LR. I need to decide on a color first anyhow and as fast as time flyes, along with my ability to make a decision that DH and I can agree on, it will be March before I know it.

Yes i've been posting alot. Because i don't have paint on my walls I'm not allowed to post other questions..? I post the different ones to try and keep them separate. I'll probably soon post one about a lamp. I spent a lot of money on the drapes i have up and as a result need to keep them for awhile. I originally didn't have enough for the window and at that point wasn't able to use them. I then posted on here and didn't get much feedback. (this was awhile back. during the end of the house construction i think.) Went shopping and found extra panels and valances and bought them. DH will have a total cow if i decide i'm buying new curtains already. They're growing on me. My room was so empty. I had an e.stand, couch and loveseat. Slowly started getting more pieces. Pillows and picture frames can be inexpensive. My overall house is really empty (except for the one spare room with all my crap i still need to go through!) and I would like the main room to feel a little homey. Totally agree that paint will make a huge difference. I'll get there ... and i'll be on here asking for help. :)

do we like this?? i do.

    {{gwi:1691684}}

described as "burgundy & beige floral damask chenille"
    fabric sides is burgundy tafetta
    back is chenille strip.
    size is 14 x 12

the waverly jacquard one above is 12 x 17

the burgundy one i'm taking back because it's too big is...like 19 x 19. i don't remember exactly and they don't list the size online.

I appears to be burgundy, and your couches appear to be a rusty red. I wouldn't use it if that is the case, plus the background reads very gold compared to the color of the chair.

    last modified: 10 years ago

Les - my couch material is sort of funny. last night looking at it upclose it appeared a rusty red in some spots, crimson in others. From a distance it looks burgundy depending on the time of day. Nice huh? I still really like the damask one. What if i changed the burgundy lamp shade out to a black one? The current one doesn't really match but i like the lamp.

    last modified: 10 years ago

I like that one and especially because the colors are reversed- so you don't have a red field and bronze highlights, which to me competed with the sofa pattern too much.

It seems like a great size, and between the taffeta and chenille, will add great texture and luxury:-)

decorpas - i emailed the lady about the background color. this is what she said....
"It is beige, but as it is a woven fabric with some shiny thread going through it, maybe it seems to look more like an antique gold color"
now i'm second guessing again because the chair is tan. blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. ha i want to buy them both but i can't return them.

can someone photoshop the pillows on the chair? pretty please.

I like the jacquard pillow above-- the one that you had wanted to add tassles to. I know it may not be the exact red/rust/burgundy of your sofa but as you said, it is across the room and it doesn't clash to my eye. More importantly, it brings in the color of the chair and makes everything look like they were brought together intentionally. And remember, not everything in the old world matched exactly ;)

Personally, I don't care what order your situation calls for you to do things to improve your room and make it "home". If you ask a question (or ten questions) that I can answer or that I have an opinion on, I will answer. That's how these boards work, right?

Ah, okay- well I say it is time to go for that Jaquard pillow then! it's a great size and Funky has a point about things not having to match, etc. Go for it:-) Sorry I can't PS it for you!

hopefully it works! i'll give an update then.

Yes i've been posting alot. Because i don't have paint on my walls I'm not allowed to post other questions..?

I'm making the point that there is a logical order in buying things to decorate a room, and pillows and small picture frames come somewhere down the list after drapes and wall paint.

In the end, how you go about it is up to you. I wish you well with your efforts to decorate your house.

After seeing the other huge burgundy one on the chair for so long i think this one looks too small!! Oh well. I changed the lamp shade from the light burgundy (didn't really match anything) to black and think it looks better. Late last night, don't know if it was the lighting or that i was tired but the chair looked 'dirty'. The gold on the pillow against the tan chair.... this morning i thought it looked good.

styleguy, those pillows don't seem to be well stuffed or well sewn, I would keep looking if I were you.

for those who sew, is there a trick in getting a pillow to not have those pointy empty corners sticking out ?

Love the new pillow on the chair! The size is just right for that type of chair, the other one looked too oversized. Like the black shade on the lamp, too!

To answer your question, mitchdesj, yes, there is a trick to getting a pillow to not have those pointy empty corners sticking out. The trick is to not start with a perfect square of fabric for the pillow. Each corner needs to taper in slightly, but still be sewn at a 90 degree corner at the point. Does that make any sense? This will eliminate the bulk at the corner that creates the empty corners sticking out. You'll still end up with a square pillow. Also, if you are making, for example, an 18" square pillow, cut an 18" piece of fabric and use a 1/2" seam allowance. I hope these tips help.

I sew pillows for a living - this is how to get the tapered corners and eliminate the "dog ear" pillows; Cut your square pillow as you normally would in whatever size you want. Measure from the corner tip along each side and mark the 1" mark and 2" mark with chalk or pins. Take a straight ruler (is there any other kind??) and draw a line from the two inch mark on one side to the 1" mark on the other side. Do the same with the other markings on the opposite side. You should now have a "x" just below the corner tip. This is your new sewing ling and your "dog ears" will disappear! I hope this helps!
