Front Door Jewellery

This is my first post to this forum.

We are currently building our home and preparing for a late summer move and I am hyper focused on every design detail. I feel here I am among friends. Anyway the current obsession is with the front doors. Originally the builder wanted to stick in a pair of budget doors with generic inside the glass muntins (mullions?? Always forget which is which) but it wasn't for me. Not being snobby, just too common a style here.

I have opted to swap those for a pair of solid 6 panel doors painted in a deep brown (so deep it reads black, but softened so that it doesn't jar against the brown earthy tones of the home).

The only issue with this move to solid doors is that it deletes the ability to view visitors. A glass transom runs across the top so while providing light, won't help keep shady characters on the right side of the door. So, to the question, I want a bit of bling, and I need a peephole. Does anyone have peepholes in both of their double front doors? Also is it too much to add a set of door knockers (mostly decorative) under both peepholes, and corresponding kick plates on both doors. All of these will relate to the lock and grip hardware which is in a stainless steel finish. Is this symmetry overload? Have you done this? Anyone have a pic? I can't find one anywhere, which always makes one second guess themselves...

Yes!! You ARE among friends ... many of us would indeed be considered to be somewhat "obsessed" with house/home decor! LOL! :)

    ((ahem ... standing and waving ... I AM a decor book/magazine addict ....)

A vote for a peephole in both doors. Allows for a fuller view of the outside. Of course -- good lighting helps too!

As for the question of whether to add a doorknocker on each door -- yes -- if you choose a simple one (like a large twisted black iron ring with matching door handle/lock)

Don't forget to add a large doormat too! :)

Your new house sounds wonderful -- hope you'll post some pics here! :)

Any chance of posting a pic of the type of door you've chosen? Not sure how a peephole would look without seeing the door. Will you be installing a security system that perhaps includes a camera of your front and back entry doors. We have that type of set up, and it is becoming more common. If you had that type of system, you can view who is standing in front of your door without having to drill peepholes? Also, installation of most security systems during construction are less troublesome.

Any event, yes you've come to the right place. I am sure you will get lots of great advice!

Your new home does sound wonderful and with the attention to detail, I know it will look stunning.

They make door knockers with peepholes in them. Maybe you can find something you like here.

Here is a link that might be useful: Door knockers with peepholes.

We had the same issue, the option we chose was a solid wood door with a small window "speakeasy" The door will be stained but as of right now just installed it looks like

It wasn't terribly more expensive than the door the builder had spec'ed. Neither Dh or I was crazy about having a door that was half glass (as most in the area are) or all wood with no way to see who is at the door.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have linked to the style of door I have chosen just for clarity. Since our door isn't in yet I don't have any photos from my own build. But the transom in the pic similar and so is the vision. We'll have a double rather then a single.

Thanks also for the alternate suggestions. I have considered the all in one knocker/peep hole and also the large peep hole option. though I haven't seen anything quite like your speakeasy window amielynn. I like the way the (wrought iron??) crisscross repeats on your house and door, nice continuity.

Work_in_progress a surveillance type system would be the absolute gold standard. We are roughing in an alarm system but not quite so sophisticated. Maybe it's an upgrade we should consider.

2 peep holes, 2 knockers 2 kick plates and the necessary lock sets? sounds gaudy to me. And kick plates don't belong on the outside of a door that opens outward.
Think classic, don't mess up the look of the simple panelled doors with gewgaw. The 2 peep holes are necessary, but skip the knockers and the kick plate and perhaps hang a pair of wreaths which you change seasonally.....or leav off and just put up now and then for variety.

    Love the door pictured.

Really, installing surveillance camera systems aren't quite the ordeal they may have once been. It actually works off of a computer monitor for viewing purposes. Your local HD or Lowes probably carry options for camera set up. They are affordable for the normal homeowner, whereas at one time, systems were usually used by the "rich and famous". lol

Anyhoo, while I agree with not messing up a good door, do what you think looks best and provides you with security options prior to opening your door.

Ah, lindac, never surprised by your "direct" opinions.

You've received some great suggestions, but I'm curious as to why you want double front doors rather than perhaps a single door with 2 sidelights? Have you considered the way double doors lock? The double doors I've seen have one door that locks into the top and bottom of your door frame with a type of sliding bolt and the other door bolts into that one. So essentially without a fair bit of manuevering, you use one door. Both doors have handles and the person unfamiliar with your door system often tries unsuccessfully to get in through the door still bolted shut. Perhaps there are better closure systems out there that I haven't seen. I think doors can be so beautiful, both single and double, so it's really a personal thing, but after having double, I have viewed them a little differently now.

Sinple round door knockers, absolutely. Two kick plates, definitely---they would look odd on one door and not both. Our front door opens in and we NEED that kickplate with dogs, kids (big) and workmen (bigger). Two peepholes, absolutely, although I also think you would like a single door with two large sidelights (for the extra light), unless there is a security issue.

These are the kind of door knockers I had in mind:

Well chosen, high quality fittings will make your door look substantial and dress it up a bit. Be careful about the kick plates, however; we tried several from home stores that looked awful after a few years---not tarnished, but pitted--and finally ordered solid lacquered brass plates for $129 from Baldwin. They were absolutely worth the extra $$, as we haven't replaced them since.

Unless it is Christmas, nothing dates a house quite so much as twin wreaths on the doors, but that is just imo.
