Do you have "art" on your porch or patio?

Continuing my obsession with my new screen porch while waiting for screens to come in... We will have one big blank wall out there that I'd like to hang Something on, just not sure what. The "outdoor art" pieces at places like Grandin Road just aren't speaking to me. I have seen some cool metal flowers that I'd like, but DH is not impressed. Just thought I might check in here for some inspiration, maybe photos of what you have on your porch? One thing I don't want out there is a "theme" if you know what I mean, so I'd like to avoid anything that screams Beach Porch or Tiki Room or "It's 5:00 Somewhere"....

You can see the space I'm referring to in the photo -- the wall to the left of the window. There will be a loveseat on that wall that will run partway under the window but won't be centered under the window.

Loving art like I do, I have a number of different pieces. Although mine work great (IMO) on my New Mexican hacienda's front portal, maybe they'll inspire something from your part of the country.

On the wall behind my porch swing, I have this sun and pair of sconces:

In another spot I have this gecko:

Standing guard next to our front door, I have this (Contemporary) shaman statue. He's 5 1/2-ft tall and has a sweet face:

This statue sits right off the main seating:

And then this sweet mask hangs over the main seating area. Totally NOT Southwestern, but I love it:

Mine is very dated. The furniture came from a yard sale about 10 years ago and was very cheap so I couldn't pass it up. Since it was so dated, I easily found a canvas at a thrift store (lots of turquoise and pink at a thrift store, right?) to put on the wall.

I do! Screened porch over looking backyard has a museum banner from an impressionist exhibit at the Los Angeles museum (LACMA), and the downstairs patio has two banners from the Huntington museum (the same banner, hung to display both sides which shows more of the Constable painting advertising the exhibit).

Pottery Barn has a very cool metal wall hanging but it's 5" deep, which is too much in that small space. Still hunting...

Love seeing how different everyone's approach is to porch art! Kswl, those banners are so unique. I want one!

Sueb, our porch just has a concrete plaque up now that friends gave us, and as it happens I was just glancing out and thinking how pretty a section of wall between the leaves of wisteria climbing up a post and a door would look with 3 mainly white plates hung in a vertical row behind an old chair. (They may end up being any other color (s), but the colors out there are gray, white trim, blue floor and green landscape and a Georgia summer is right around the corner. )

In any case, how about considering an arrangement of decorative plates, tile or other ceramics or earthenware? The style could be virtually anything, urban sleek to world traveler to church guild ceramics club. I like that the investment will be virtually nil so that it can be changed out on a whim. Snowflake plates next winter maybe.

Thanks, SueB---- I just LOVE them. They come in different sizes, but since they are street banners they may all be too long for your space. They're super durable vinyl, made for outdoors. I have bought these from the website linked below (no connection with them, just love what they do!).

    sueb20-

We have screens on 3 sides and 2 sets of french doors on our porch, so not a great deal of room to hang anything, but we do have these two watercolors on the dining side as well as a few sconces, a clock and a few other things on the lounging side.

    Good luck-

So, Sandy, you have regular framed prints out there and they do okay with being (somewhat) exposed to the elements? Here I am thinking I need something weatherproof...but maybe not? Love your chairs, BTW.

Yes, sueb20, regular framed vintage (signed 1948) watercolors, and they have held up just fine. Our porch is screened on 3 sides, but the long side is on the East, and our prevailing wind is from the West, so they don't get direct rain on them, but it gets damp out there and of course no A/C, so they are exposed to the elements from May - October, I take them down over the winter because that becomes the wood storage for the woodstove. I don't have a good pic, but I also have a Victorian style, marble topped table out there, and a few other prints, as well as several vintage (hence not outdoor) "pin-up" lamps and a wool oriental rug. Nothing has ever been damaged or gotten too wet, and we like the melding of porch and LR/DR aspect.

Yours is looking great, and I love the color of your house.

Oh kswl, I love your museum banners. It reminds me of a hotel I just stayed in in Portland, Oregon. Breakfast was served in an enclosed courtyard with exposed brick walls, and similar large banners hung on the walls.

For the OP's porch, I imagine something similar to what is shown in this gallery at This Old House would look nice. The particular shapes and colors aren't my cup of tea, but the general ideas would work.

    Hello sueb20,

I Live in the Midwest and have this wall art outside on our deck year round.

Great ideas, thanks and keep them coming!

Now I have so many options -- I'm waiting for some kind of inspiration to point me in the right direction. It's super helpful that whenever I show anything to DH he says, "I guess, maybe...is there anything else?"

We have very inexpensive canvas prints from Old Time Pottery on our screened porch for two years now (one of them does get blasts of rain from time to time), and they have held up well. When I find my photos, I'll post them for you. (The porch is in the process of being cleaned, so I can't snap a pic now...)

My vote is for an iron baker's rack or something similar. As soon as I can figure out a place to store the stuff sitting on mine, it's going on my front porch.

I've seen them on other porches too, and they're really nice looking. It will add height to the porch which I think you need. Baker's racks or other decorative iron shelving units are inexpensive. You can spray paint them too.

I bought a decorative iron plant stand w/4 shelves from Hobby Lobby for around $40. I spray painted it a light vintage green and set it on the porch. I don't put plants on it either. lol I just love it!

They're versatile. You can put shade plants on them along with other decorative items. Once at Christmas I saw a baker's rack identical to mine on a front porch that had some vintage ice skates on it along with other decorations. Beautiful.

    So that's my vote. :)

Oakley, there's no room for more furniture. There will be a loveseat on that wall under the window, and another loveseat on the perpendicular "wall" of screens on the left (they'll be in an L shape), with an end table in the corner. What I'm looking for is something to hang on the wall to the left of the window.

Here are pics of the canvas paintings, Sueb. They're not great works of art, but they add a little color and have held up well. Our area gets too much direct rain at times and is much too humid for regular framed prints. I hope you enjoy your new porch as much as we enjoy ours!

No prints, but some sculptural pieces. We have a large patina`d sun over our garage door; i have an old weathered skinny yable with pots of flowers & knicknacks on the skinny entryway. I also have some stars on the wall there (between 2 sets if windows). We have a very large, Italinate fountain near the entry so i try to keep that the focus.

But i love when people decorate their exterior spaces.

Hoosiergirl I love your canvas paintings.

Another suggestion would be those colorful seasonal flag type banners. I see them mounted on flag holders, but have also seen them hanging from a wall mounted rod - like a tapestry rod. There are some cute ones for the different seasons and different holidays.

Some will call them "gawdy" - I think they are happy and colorful.

I have a patio that is half under roof, half open with two brick walls plus brick patio pavers - it looks like a dark hole sometimes. I have been contemplating something light and colorful like these banners/flags to brighten the space up under the covered portion.

Please tell me they are not as gawdy as plastic flamingos and those little twirley things in flower beds and gardens :)

We do have art pieces on our front entry way. Bought at a gallery in Washington DC many years ago. Enameled over copper emulating our geographical area and safe to be outside. Our pieces our protected from the elements, however, but we've always been aware that they could be stolen. Oddly enough, we had a cardboard box with towels and blankets used to give comfort to a feral cat in the winter stolen right from under the art pieces. Go figure. Yes, we like art pieces in the entryway/porch areas; but there is a price to pay -- thieves are out there -- beware.

I have had this basket for SO many years and It is on my patio right now. Here is a previous house. I needed something that would not break if it fell or blew off the wall. We can have strong winds here in AZ.

I found a few possibilities at the World Market web site today that I was excited about....then DH, who is a photographer (not professional, but very good) said he'd like to maybe blow up some of his photos for the wall....maybe we'll try the photo prints on canvas? Haven't done it before but I saw one at a friend's house that was really nicely done from Smug Mug.

The big news is the painting (trim, ceiling) is now done and the furniture is being delivered tomorrow! Just need those screens...

Your DH's own photos on canvas sound fantastic, Sueb! I'd love that! Now you've given me an idea for the future!

Sueb I just kinda did something like that myself!
I had a 4X6 photo of greenery from Killarney National Park
that I sent to Snapfish....they enlarged it on canvas and
it came out great. I say your DH maybe on to something!
Your new porch looks great as does the rest of your houses.

Thanks! Furniture arrived yesterday -- still no screens, but they're supposed to be in by the end of the week. I love the loveseats (that sounds odd) and once I get the tables out there I'll be able to step back and see what that wall really "needs." I have seen a couple of chalkboards that I thought could be fun combined with a couple of framed photos.

Irish, am seeing cardiologist Thurs., hoping for some answers then. I haven't had dramatic episodes like I did a couple of weeks ago, but I have had enough weird sensations that something doesn't seem right.

My mom has a vintage chalkboard on her large, wrap around porch-- she loves it and changes messages based on the season or event. I LOVE the idea of using some of your husbands photos.I think that's perfect!

A local restaurant here has some gorgeous architectural photos blown up very large. My sister and I were admiring them-- they are so interesting and dramatic because of how they are blown up and cropped. The owner was walking by and joined our conversation-- turns out they are photos the owner shot of a local bridge. I'd never have expected they were done by a (good) amateur.

LOVE your museum banners, kswl.. they're fun and unexpected. Perfect for your space!

My husband has had this painting since the 70's. Done by a friend, we've never really had a place to hang it. I just found a frame and he will hang on the blank wall on our newly built wrap around porch!
