My Fake Ficus Needs to go Bye-Bye

Among the numerous, numerous ramblings in my head these days as I am on a quest to update my home ... is the question of what one does when one grows weary of the fake ficus tree in the corner of a room. I keep trying to take it out, but it looks so utterly blank. Before you suggest real plants ... I have a few ... but our relationship is not so good. I ignore them, they resent it, they die, I buy new ones and the cycle continues. Anything more trendy out there to replace the fake ficus? Photos always apprecaited!

    How about a palm plant?

If you could post a photo of the room, it would help to offer suggestions based on space and other decor.

Do post a photo or two if you can -- it really helps us to help you find the "right" item! :)

I did trash (well -- donate!) my old silk ficus tree that sat in the corner of the dining room (usually with little white lights in it! LOL!)

Anyway -- I have tried to keep that corner "naked" just to let that space "breathe" for awhile .... never easy -- I keep finding goodies on our local Craigs List!

How about replacing YOUR tree with a corner cupboard? Maybe a lighted one? Or simply a corner shelving unit -- you could paint it to match your walls or trim! OR paint it a really fun color!

Or add a small stool or chair to the corner? With some artworks or even plates on each of the corner walls?

    Hope this helps!

Here is a photo - didn't use flash -hope you can see okay.

What about some sort of large candle wall sconce?? I think the "bareness" you don't like could be remedied by something hanging at eye level. I can't find anything good, but here's the idea:

Is there anything under the wall decor? If not, I'd remove the plant and move the wall decor to the left so it's centered with the sofa.
I would even consider putting a sofa table behind the sofa and placing a lamp and accessories on it.

Other option, set a large decorative floor lamp where the plant is.

Do you mean like this? LOL

How about trying a 3-4 fold decorative screen.

I can't really add to the good suggestions above but just wanted to say that your room is lovely. The overall color combination is so warm and yet fresh. It would be very nice to see more of your home.

I would switch the location of the end table and lamp to the other side of the couch. It seems to fight with the nice cabinet behind it, and the couch feels like it is pulled way left to the wall.

Then I would get a pedestal for the corner, and put (yes, I know, you don't really want this suggestion) a nice fluffy boston fern on it.

Of course, without seeing the rest of the room there is no way for us to know if there might be other options in furniture placement or things that could be used in that corner. Wanna take a few more pix?

You have a lot of lovely things in the space!

You guys are just the best! So nice to have another set of eyes x 4!

Dixiedo - Feeling like I need more of a corner thingy. Picture below should give better idea.

Newhomebuilder ... you get my drift, but I must say that is a lovely setting ... ficus, lights and all!

les917... I adore Boston ferns but the mess makes me crazy. Take a look at my zoomed back photo. Do you think moving table and lamp would do the trick?

Annz - liking the floor lamp idea.

Keep 'em coming! P.S. I really don't have yellowy/pea-green walls - just the evening and a flash!

Annz -just processed your comment about moving wall decor to the left and center over sofa. Might just work.

I must have skipped down a page without catching other comments. Thanks so very much for your input and help, many ideas to ponder in such a short period of time!

Hey Newhomebuilder - I had that tree! Lights and all. Once they even had chili pepper light covers. ....Mine is in the attic now, just in case. : )

Tnorman, I haven't read all the other posts yet, so this may have been said already. I would move the end table and lamp to the other end of the sofa and center the art on the wall and the loveseat accordingly. As it is there seems to be a lot of wood very close together and nothing to balance it on the other side.

    Thanks for the extra views.

Depth and dimension are often deceiving in pix. But judging what I see here, the first thing I would do is move the large cabinet with the marble top and mirrored back over to the wall currently being discussed. That piece deserves to be a focal point, not tucked away on a small wall. I would move it to the right side of the wall a bit, so that you could get a reading chair and floor lamp in the corner where the tree is now.

Move the small cabinet to the wall where the large one is now. If the two art pieces on that wall are not directional (and they don't appear to be) I would try stacking them one over the other horizontally above that small cabinet.

Leave the loveseat where it is, and run the couch parallel to the window, so it creates a right angle with the loveseat. Put the table and lamp at the corner of the right angle.

I would also consider taking the rug from the dining room and using it in the LR. It is a bit large for the DR, and the furniture in the LR could use the rug to create a visual break between the carpeting and the light furniture.

I have tried several times to grow a palm tree in my living room. It will do well for a while and then it gets those itty bitty red spider mites. I spray it, but the tree always dies anyway. Where do those little buzzards come from? How do any of you have better luck with living palms in your houses?

I like les' suggestion for moving the furniture around because right now everything in the room looks off balance.

My own thoughts on big trees is you should always have an uplight to show it off as NHB so nicely demonstrates with hers.

tnorman, I love your end table. Can you tell me where you got it?

Thanks so very much for the input. I really checked out les' suggestion, but don't think my room is large enough to handle that. Also, I was standing in my foyer while taking photo. My marble top piece is what you see when you come in the door. It's my very favorite piece of furniture. In an effort to balance more, what would you think of me moving the small cabinet (secretary) to the spot where the ficus is and then get some sort of torch-like lamp for the spot of the secretary? That, combined with moving my larger rug?
