RECIPE: Just had baby---what dishes best to drop by?

Anyone that recently had a baby, what did you especially appreciate among meals that were brought to your home?

Just about anything worked for us! Except, fish and game meat someone brought over. Wasn't crazy about that at all (but it was a nice gesture). Anyway, I would recommend Chili and Cornbread, Lasagna and Salad, Casserole and Salad, etc. I always include a batch of brownies, too. HTH!

Our DD likes to make her chicken pot pie and salad (and some kind of cookies) when its her turn at church to prepare dinner for a homebound new mom or other homebound person. I think of soup and salad as a great meal to bring to someone - they can use it right away or put it in the freezer for later and there are so many great soup recipes out there.

Every now and then you'll find a woman who is breastfeeding who prefers to keep her diet milder...like no strong garlic, spices, etc... I think they believe the strong flavors are carried into the breastmilk and that some babies may not like the taste or something. I never noticed it, but thought I would mention it, just in case.

I liked chicken dishes, and as woodie suggested, soup and salad may be good too. You may even consider including a quiche or breakfast food since they will be home all day long.

I'm sure they'll appreciate anything and all you bring.

Another vote for soup, it reheats well and can be frozen if it doesn't all get eaten. I usually bake homemade bread or muffins to go with it because I'm not as fond of salads as Woodie is.

If there are other children at home I usually bake some cookies or make a sweet snack for them too.

Other favorites have been lasagna, pot roast, scalloped potatoes and roasted chicken.

Frozen dishes are great because they can be used as needed: chicken pot pie, hot beef, a meatloaf ready to bake as well as beef stew, etc. Don't forget fresh fruit and some sweets.

I really appreciate everyone's comments. I think I might make up a menu including chili, lasagne, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, pot roast, roast chicken, quiche soup and salad with dressing choices, overnight French toast (thanks for the breakfast food suggestion) and let them "order". Carla, thank you, too, for the reminder about some nursing women avoiding spices.
