Would this art work in my living room?

At the suggestion of many GW'ers and myself, I am on the hunt for new art to go over my living room couch, seen here:

I really love this piece from Z Gallerie. It is a giclee canvas in a floating wood frame. I absolutely love the colors, and it is large-- 50x40 inches. It is quite expensive at $550. But would I be able to get an original piece that is comparable for that price? If anyone knows how to do Photoshop, would you mind doing a mockup for me?

It is called "In Reason" by someone named A. Pyne. Any suggestions for artists who do similar work?

While I don't think that art has to "match" an interior, I think this piece is a bit intense for your room.

I like the picture but I think the shape is wrong. If you just have one picture I think one that is wider would be better.

I honestly don't see a problem with the pictures that you have. Did I miss a thread where people didn't like them? I think you have a very pretty comfortable room.

A giclee is a fancy name for an inkjet print....and I think $550 is outta sight to pay for a print.
I would much prefer a real oil by an unknown artist than an ink jet by an unknown artist....with the profit going to the printer and the store rather than go to the artist.
There are lots of pictures by student artists.....and you can look at art fairs and shows. almost all thea rt in my house was bought directly from the artist, but for things like Currier and Ives prints and Godey prints and a few other old engravings.
I've linked a student gallery site....and there are lots of others. I could browse for a long time....and like everything....sone of it is awful and some wonderful.

I like what you already have more.

I like your current art better, too. Honestly, I didn't see any problems with your room the first time around! It's pretty, soothing & well pulled together in my opinion.

Do you mind if I ask what your wall color is?

I don't mind your current art. For me, the thing that sticks out is the side chair. I believe if you have limited space for furniture that every piece should really say something about the space. I think there's a great opportunity to find a different chair that says more and injects a bit more style. If you're going for a more contemporary space, perhaps a chair that is more sculptural.
Also, some side panels for your windows would be a lovely, finishing touch.

I really like what you currently have too. Maybe dry-brush the frames a bit for a softer look??

What pal said about the color intensity relative to the rest of your room. And, I think, particularly relative to your rug. You can always pump up the intensity in the room relatively inexpensively with new pillows and the like, but a new rug would be a pricier fix.

Also, what lindac said about the price for a print. Instead of a giclee, go for original art -- look in street fairs, art fairs, auctions....we recently won a small poster done for a town event at the event's poster auction. Our poster, one of well over a hundred, is an original oil on posterboard. I think it was about $130 or so. Unknown artist and needs to be framed, which is an additional cost. But my point is that you can do much, much better than spending that kind of money on a giclee.

If you do decide to replace your art, don't forget about dimensions. The giclee would have been too narrow anyway. I'd suggest dimensions similar to what you already have.

I love your room just as it is! And I like your current artwork better than the one you're proposing. If I had to change anything, I'd try just one of the current pieces above the sofa.

Ditto what Pal said, I think its too intense for the existing color scheme. I also agree the shape is not good unless you are going to add more width with a grouping. What you have is very nice, but maybe something in the softer color scheme but with more colors in it so its not so matching.

The wall color is SW Ramie. The chair was my grandmothers, and it is just sort of a placeholder right now. I have been searching for new chairs. I would really like to get 2 chairs, but I am unsure how to arrange everything. I would also like to get a new rug--I've been coveting a real hand-knotted forever. The current rug is very nice, 100% wool Couristan machine woven. It is in the same line as My3dog's lovely living room rug. They have been selling this line of rugs in the last year at Tuesday morning for less than half price. It doesn't come off quite as pale in person. I want to eventually move it into my bedroom, where it will be perfect.

Does anyone have recommendations for a rug? What color scheme? I really like some of the orientals that are a bit more modern without a really tight or busy pattern. Something maybe like this:

This rug is from Williams Sonoma home, and is way out of my price range at over $2K. Is it possible to get a hand-knotted for around $1K? I need at least an 8x10.

Pal, I wish you could come over! I know what I like and I think I have decent taste, but my trouble is in pulling everything together.

    Forgot to add--

I just ordered this pic online--Le Buisson by Matisse. It measures 34x27, so it will be somewhat larger framed.

Probably not big enough to go solo over the couch, but could someone photoshop it up there for me? By the way, is there a program you can download for free that will do what laurensmom did for me above? it would be alot easier to visualize things if I could start testing things out before buying.

Thanks to Lindac's tip, I have already found some great stuff on studentartgallery.com. Here is one that is 24x48 that might be the perfect size. It is slightly reminiscent of the first pic I posted with the lovely vibrant colors, but not as intense. The only problem is there is no way to see the piece in person first.

The artist's name is Vreni Michelini, and it is entitled "Immigration". Why is it that artists always have these great artistic names, too? Never see too much art by people named Tom Smith, for example.

I like the print that you posted--but agree that the scale is off and the colors a bit bright for the room.

I really like your existing rug and chair a lot.

I also like the "Immigration" art and think it would be a good fit for your room. I would just try a putting a template up to check the size. 24 inches may be a bit short.

I like the channel back chairs and think they would be worth recovering, maybe with a short tailored skirt to make the deck look a little more substantial.

The last piece you show is definitely more appropriate than the first even though it is brightly colored: the shape is better, the subject matter is more restful (scenic rather than galloping horses) and overall if I had to relate them to something else, the first reminds me of LeRoy Neiman, while the second reminds me of a Fauvist painting.

I really like both pieces that you posted but I don't think the first one is right for your room, either in size or intensity. The second is definitely better and I think the 24x48 is the size you should be looking for. That is what I am picturing in my head over there, something wide but not extremely high.

Another place to look for original art is at etsy.com. I have bought a couple of original pieces from there in the past and I have been extremely happy with my purchases. GL!
