Opinions please - tile or granite backsplash?

We are shopping for our granite, doing a kitchen facelift with new sinks and cooktop to go with the new counters. One of us wants to do a tile backsplash, the other wants to do it in granite to match the counters. You don't see the granite backsplash as often as tile. Personally, I think it looks too heavy, and I'm wondering about resale appeal down the road. I've only seen a few photos of this style so hard to tell if I'm going to like it. We are looking at a lighter rather than darker granite, with multi colors/movement.

Should mention that our largest section of granite will be on a peninsula with no backsplash. Backsplash is limited to two sections -- each about 5' long under cabinets and window, with sinks. Each section will have one side wall to do as well.

I learned my lesson about using granite as a backsplash. If there will be a section without a cabinet or window above it, then you need to make sure that your wall is level horizontally and vertically (no ripples). Otherwise, there might be an unsightly gap.

I think calmer granite backsplashes look clean and modern, and busier granite backsplashed can overwhelm. Do you have a photo of your granite or something similar?

If I was using a granite that had a lot of swirls and movement, then I'd probably go with a simple tile backsplash, so the granite can be the star of the kitchen.

I think it depends on your stone, but I almost always prefer tile. Granite looks too heavy and too much of a good thing. I like that tile brings another element to the room, whether it's a color, a texture, a sparkle, a something.

If you're worried about resale soon, you might want to go with the more commonly seen tile option as a bs.

I am having my granite installed this week, and also grappled with the same decision. I too have a peninsula which is the largest section of granite. I decided to go with a tile backsplash for a few reasons: Firstly because I agree with you that sometimes all granite can look like a little too much, especially with granite that has lots of colors and movement. Secondly, tile is usually much less expensive, and easier to change if you want a different look a few years down the road.
    Good luck with your decision!

Thanks! I just met with our granite installer this afternoon, and he very gently nudged me toward tile. He pointed out that we have a couple of feet of backsplash with no cabinets above, and it will look very thick and heavy where it meets with the painted wall. Also, would have to reposition some undercabinet light fixtures. The current tile is very thin ceramic so we'd lose an inch of counter top by adding granite and I think it might even affect the space we have for the faucet behind the sink. I've convinced DH that we'll go with tile.

Now, to pick the tile!! So many decisions!! I don't have any pics yet, still trying to decide on our granite color, and we seem to change our minds almost daily.

Every time I read your name I see Happyhooker. Man, I'm tired.... Yikes!

You'll drive yourself crazy looking for granite and tile! So many beautiful choices. At least you've scratched a granite b.s. off the list. Every choice you discard leads you closer to the right one!
