Please help me choose a foyer light...

We just moved into our new home and I am having a heck of a time choosing a new light for the entry.

There was previously a knee wall and we opened them all up and added hardwood and the railings. We still need to paint.

I have narrowed it down to two options. One is round and one is square and I can't decide which one would look better in the space. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Something seems off on the proportions of the first one, like the candles are too short and the bulbs too small...will it throw enough light for you in that large space?

    The 2nd one is nice.

Of the two you have shown, I like the style of the first one in your foyer. Its shape and color reinforce the top finish on your newell posts, and match the simple aesthetic of the room better than the more formal one.

However - and this is a big however - think about the fact that, because of the height and flow of your staircase (which is lovely), with a lantern-style fixture such as these, you will be looking into unshaded lightbulbs as you go up and down the stairs. Your eyes will react to the strong light, and you won't see anything in the room (including the stairs themselves) nearly as well as you should.

I would continue to look until I found a fixture that was enclosed in translucent rather than transparent glass. It will light the area more evenly, and be safer and more balanced in the overall scheme.

Keep in mind that you want to see the effect of the light rather than just the source of the light.

Thank you for the responses. How about something like this, or is this style more suited to a dining room? I'm so confused.

I like number two. Three is lovely. I think I would need to see the style of your home to say yay or nay to the last one.

Do you have any other pics of your house and decor?

We just moved in last week, so the rooms aren't really set up and decorated. I attached one picture of the living room and a couple of pictures from our old house just to give you an idea. Thanks!

After seeing your decor in your nearby living areas I would go with something like 1 or 2 and not something so decorative. I prefer the second one.

    Good luck! Lovely home!

I actually like the one that is there now. :)

It appears that you have more casual than formal decor, the large lamps you've shown look somewhat formal to me. I'd look for something with a frosted glass to cut out the glare off the bulbs.

I like the first two, prefer the first. It is a bit matchy, depends what kind of look you like. It's more casual for your furnishings. Only 3 candles, at 60W?, would that be enough light for your vaulted area? The current one is four?

Glare is unpleasant, but I have never had trouble seeing into the foyer with an open bulb chandelier in place. Some have had many arms. Is it difficult to see below with the current one?

Very pretty stair install! Huge improvement.

I like what you have currently except for the color of the fixture. Can you just spray paint it a different color?

definitely some kind of lantern or bell jar. that murray feiss chandy is nice, but not really suited for the foyer imo. btw, i have two of the MF chandies pictured above. one in the master bath and another in the master bedroom.

Thanks everyone. As far as the current light fixture, I think it is way too big. It overpowers the space.

I think I am leaning towards option 2 for now!

    Thanks again.

    What about something like this?
Just saw it on today's Cote de Texas blog.

I like the colors and materials in 1 w/ the softer shape of 2. Your staircase seems to have a fair amount of angles so I like the roundness of 2.

I like the finish on the first with the shape of the second. What a gorgeous entry.

I like the second one. The entry has a lot of angles and straight lines. You don't need more and the round one has a softness against them. I also like the classic shape and think a lantern can play a bit more formal for your entry and still get along with a casual home and lifestyle. I have a similar style in my front entry with clear glass and glare from the bulbs has never been a problem, but my stairs wrap a bit differently. You can always get a frosted bulb and put a dimmer on the fixture.

    ditto with dermnp

i don't know the dimensions of the lanterns, but i would be concerned that they're alittle too small for your space--- of the 2, i like #1 better...
but, i would get a chandelier for the foyer... maybe not as ornate as the #3 you show, but more along those lines... the openness of the chandy will look much different and airier than your current heavy birdcage style... even if the dimensions are similar or even sl larger.

    Thank you everyone!

The ceiling height is approximately 14 feet. The height of option #2 (the round one) is 33".

I do like this other option from PB which is completely different end of the spectrum. My husband will hate it. But it is only 22.5" high which I believe is too small.

Any other suggestions for something more chandelier like?

Very glam. I don't think it fits your house or decor. Coloring is good.

    How about this one?

    I like it.

I like it! I think it's the best of all your choices so far. Is it large enough?

Yes, I like it, too, and agree with olychick that it should be large.

Here are the dimensions- 17ü" diam., 22"H; 37"H to canopy

    Is that big enough?

Is that a Kalco fixture? I looked at one in what I think it that same collection and loved it. The way it was hanging in the store reminded me of outdoor lanterns and I imagined camping and fireflies. Silly, I know, but talk about bringing the outdoors in! LOL It would be hanging in my breakfast room right now if it went with the kitchen fixture or I knew what to replace that one with.

I suspect it may not be as large as your current fixture, but it has strong, simple lines and color, so I think it will still make a statement. The current one might be a bit too large for me anyway. I'd try to get measurements on that one if you can so you will have a better idea how it compares. If you want to hang it a little lower, you can probably order an extra down rod. I think it's worth pulling out the ladder and the measuring tape.

I like the one you most recently posted the best. Very pretty light.

    I like the first one.

I don't think it is long enough since there is no chain. I guess I need to keep looking. I'm drawn to something with crystals but can't seem to find the right one.

    Thanks everyone!

    Okay, thoughts on this one?

It is 14.75 diameter and 30" long with a 12' chain.

The styling of this one seems like a good fit. The coloring looks orb or a little of the orange tone. What is the finish?

No, that's not the Kalco -- made me look. ;)

Here is the Kalco one that is similar and just a little larger (19.25 x 37.5 inches). It does have these crystal raindrop sort of things that hang on those hook ends. You can use them or not. Does that give you a touch of crystal?

Here is a link that might be useful: Kalco Morris

lascatx-I like that one, definitely an option!

I came across this one online today, thoughts? It is 20.5 w and 35" high.
