How are you handling your big screen TV?

We are renovating our great room and DH is planning on a 52" TV with 3 speakers adjacent to it. All are pretty flat so they can be mounted on the wall with a minimal projection. All electronics will be hidden in a nearby hall closet. I am trying to design the TV wall - so it blends in well with the open kitchen. This is not really a "media room" nor a "man cave" - just a family room with open kitchen next to it.

Overall room size is 19 wide x 27 long. Kitchen is in one half and family room is in other. Hardwood floors throughout. TV wall is directly opposite the kitchen and ceiling is vaulted - 10' high at peak, just under 8' high at sides - wall is 19 feet wide. TV is centered on wall directly under peak.

(sorry I don't know how to post floorplan!)

Right now we are thinking of a veneer ledger stone accent - about 8' wide running up to ceiling. TV mounted on top of that.

I've googled through the "images" of entertainment centers, media rooms, etc. I would LOVE to see what some of you have done! Thanks.

Here's ours. It's not fancy, but it fits our needs and we like it! Good luck with your reno!

We have a great room similar to yours with a higher peak. Speakers are in the wall, and painted over (are okay to do that). The TV is recessed in a niche. We decided on size/depth during construction. I had a set of sliding panels custom made and keep them closed when the TV is not on. I never turn on TV and did not want to see it all day.

Scroll down to the 6th picture. The shutter to the right was made into a door. It hides the DISH equipment, DVD player and DVDs.

Diane, one thing to consider when placing the TV: we looked online to find the proper height to place the tv at & all the recommendations were for the eye level to fall mid-screen. Now, when I watch TV, I sit down (!) which means the TV ended up being MUCH lower than I had planned. I had always seen them mounted above fireplaces and that's sort of what I envisioned...but that means always looking up to watch the screen. The bottom of ours is mounted about 37" from the floor (46" screen). So it looks much too low for me from an aesthetic standpoint (lower than pictures hanging next to it) but for actually watching it, it's good. Just something else to consider...HTH

Ours is mounted over the fireplace. We designed the mantel to sit at the lowest place allowable by code and then mounted the sound bar and tv as close to the mantel as possible. The sofa is about 10 feet back from the tv, so you really don't feel like you are looking up at it.

    Totally Confused

Yeah, actually I was forgetting that most people's rooms are much larger than ours...lol. Our couch only sits about 8' from the TV (to me the TV is enormous, but that's another story!)

Allison - How did they hide the hardware for the panels to slide open?
I truly think the best place for my tv will be above the fireplace, but I really want to hide it when I'm not using it.

dianelouise, I'm not clear on what you're asking.
Are you making a stone ledge to put the tv on?
We have a 52" with a bose surround sound system with small speakers (There is actually 4 double speakers, two double speakers mounted up on the tv wall -- two double speakers mounted on the sofa wall and one double speaker under the tv. Our tv cabinet is about 24" high and the tv is about 4"
    higher with the stand.
I determined the height by putting the tv on an old coffee table, then building it up with wood until we achieved the height we wanted. I was also
constricted with the width, as the wall it's on, is only 10' and then it hits the door.
I like it open, and didn't want doors. We did however make
a cabinet for the kitchen with doors, as I didn't want to
see the tv when not in use.
You have a big room, with a lot of options.

Some great ideas - keep those pictures coming! The overall size of our room is pretty big - however, half of that room is the kitchen! The area where our couches are is really about 12 feet x 19 feet - the TV being centered on the 19 foot wall. We are not sure if we want a TV credenza with TV and speakers sitting on that or have the TV and speakers mounted directly on the sheetrock (or perhaps stone) wall with nothing else.

That's why your ideas and pictures are so helpful!

Jeannie01, they used two sizes of drawers slides. Two go one way, one the other. They are dark and mounted on stained wooden pieces, so even when open, I can't see them from across the room. The panels themselves have tops, bottoms and the two end pieces have sides, so you do not see behind the front pieces. Hope that makes sense.
