Help, do quilters like to receive quilt gifts?

Would you like to receive a quilt as a gift? I wouldnÂtÂbut maybe IÂm weird.

I have a dilemma. I have a friend who has a one year old. When my friend was pregnant I bought some fabric and started a quilt for the baby. From time to time IÂd work on it, and from time to time it was a UFO. Now, 2 years later, IÂm close to finishing. I never told my friend that I was working on this quilt for her daughter because IÂm notoriously slow at finishing my quilting projects and I didnÂt want any pressure (from myself).

In the meantime, my friend has taken up quilting! She told me the other day that she has made a quilt for her daughter. She is even organizing a weekend retreat for a number of her friends who donÂt know each other but who all quilt and she invited me to join the group.

So here is my dilemma  do I give her the quilt or not? When I had my son, my MIL bought a quilt for him. I really didnÂt know what to do with it because I like making quilts and frankly I prefer the quilts that I make to the purchased quilt that was a gift. I hope I donÂt sound too ungrateful, itÂs just how I felt (as a side note, I hung it on his wall and it made my MIL happy.) Soooooooooo, how do you feel about receiving a gift of a quilt? And what would you do if you were in my place?

Thanks,

Lola

Definitely! I recently won a quilt that I'd put together for a local museum. They made the blocks, I set them into a top and quilted it up for them. This is a quilt I'd never have made for myself (I almost never make quilts for me anyway) and I was THRILLED to win it. I'd love to get a quilt from a friend, because I know how much work goes into one.

oh yes! I have been trying to get my daughter to make me a quilt. She says why would you want one of my quilts when your so much better......... well, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have one of her quilts and I wouldn't even notice the unmatched seems and cut off points because she would have make it for me.

You bet I'd love to get a quilt. I'd probably appreciate it more than an non-quilter, for one thing. Secondly I give my quilts away and the only one I have kept to date is the first bed sized quilt I ever made and it's getting ratty from washings and I'd love to have another to change off to. Thirdly, the possibilities for designs are endless, so no two need ever be just alike, and fourthly, like Vicky says, something made by someone you love is extra special and when you look at it, you don't always just see the quilt, you see the person in your heart working on it, just for you. Priceless.

Maybe, now that your friend is learning to quilt, she might understand the work and love that goes into it, and appreciate it even more.

I would love to receive a quilt--especially one made by a friend. And the baby, once big enough to drag it around wouldn't care who it was from. Both my kids grew up with many quilts (some made and me and some not) and loved them all.

Thank you all so much - I really appreciate your opinions. I'm going to make the quilt for her!

I think making the quilt for the quilter's daughter is a perfectly good and wonderful idea, so please go forward with you plans!

Of course you should give it to her. We all love quilts, made by us or not. She will appreciate it much more now that she quilts. Have fun at the weekend retreat too.
