DH and I are at a debate on how to transition the different color hardwood from the upstairs to downstairs at the stairway.

DH wants to keep exisiting hardwood floor in that maple color so the trade off is that for downstairs I want the dark expresso color. Problem is we are not sure how exactly to transition the color change at the stairs.

Do we keep the stairs as the maple color which leads down to the expresso floor? DH is telling me that is not a good transition and it'd be odd/stand out due to color contrast between the 2 colors. What would you recommend?? DH is trying to convince me to do the downstairs the same color as upstairs but I REALLY wanted the espresso color. Any suggestions????
