pergola..how far apart are the short cross pieces?

My GC has asked and I am not sure whether they should be 12" 18"....so how far apart are the cross pieces along the length of your pergola ? Thanks in advance...any pics would be wonderful too. Also if you have a pergola above your garage door/carport I would love to see it also. Trying to get ideas together for GC. c

Caroline, we used 6 x 6s for columns, 6 x 4s along the perimeter and used 2 x 4s for cross sections. I think it depends on what you are using for crossing pieces, whether 2 x 4s or lathing strips, etc. They are relatively inexpensive to build and you should insist he use treated wood in the termite-paved south. ;-)

I measured my shoulder width and used that as a guide. I told DH when he was building our pergola I had to be able to stick my body up through the top of the pergola in order to trim/move vines. Otherwise how are you able to do any maintenance if you make it so there is no way to access to top of the pergola? If you're not planning on growing vegetation over the pergola then this may not be an issue. The closer the slats the more shade you get.

Ours is a 2'x 2' grid with lattice on top. We used 2 x 12's and cut notches to create the grid. The support posts are 6 x 6 on 8' x 12' centers.

We don't have any vines growing over ours. Some assembly photos are linked. Good luck building yours.

Thanks Patricia, flyingflower and fnm ! I guess I wasn't too clear about what I was after but the answer was there anyway. Need to not have too much shade as there is already plenty and need to be able to get up there which isn't a problem as I can climb a ladder. We will have 4 pergolas of different sizes. 3 are already started and the 4th will be attached to the front of the carport. I Googled Images and found the perfect idea. It will come off of the carport and not need more posts in the ground. I will divide the length of the different structures and come up with a number. THANK YOU...pics to follow.

We will be in NYC for 8 days so works has stopped . Will get done in early July. Lots in the works. I hate starting a vacation already tired...but ...can't stay away from the City. Thanks again...c
