Before & After Pics Built in bookcases from stained to painted -

Just wanted to share my finished built in rehab. I have included the before pics:

Before a little dated with stained cypress cabinets and fireplace mantel (much more orange than the picture shows):

I was considering ripping the built ins out and the fireplace but, now I am thinking i like it and it is much less expensive to keep it.

I cut out the center of the cabinet doors & put in linen "curtains". Added drop pull hardware. Painted them F&B Cluntch matched by my local BM Store in Satin Impervo. I also painted the mantel with sample pot of Farrow & Ball's Blue Gray and put a white wash over it. I also put stucco patch on the brick around the fireplace and painted it with watered down paint.

What do you guys think? Was a ton of work though.

Let me know if you have any questions. Be happy to answer.

Amazing! What great work AND imagination for that transformation. It's just beautiful! I am so envious of you guys that can picture the end results and go for it. I'm sure it was a lot of work but it paid off.

What a beautiful transformation! Really, really pretty. Love it!It would have been a lot of work ripping it out too! Hopefully, this is much more gratifying!

Absolutely beautiful. I liked the before but when I scrolled down to the after - Wowsah! Love the chair in the first after pic - do you have a seat cushion for it?

Absolutely love it!!! Especially the fireplace and the brick! Very elegant.

We are going to do something with our fireplace next winter, and I am going to save your picture for inspiration.

It looks wonderful! While it was nice before, the after really has that WOW! factor. It's so nice and crisp and fresh-looking now. Well done!

OH MY!!!!! That is really, really gorgeous. There are so, so, so many oak cabinets/bookshelves out there on Craigslist that look dated and unloved, and your work has just demonstrated how to give them a whole new elegant yet cozy look. Inspirational!

This is truly amazing and DIY. Score one for you! It looks like a totally different room.

It's amazing how some elbow grease, paint, fabric and an idea can totally transform the look of a room. What you have done is beautiful!! Thanks for sharing the new look with all of us!

Very awesome. I got to the 1st AFTER picture and did a double look. I honestly thought it was something clipped from a magazine or something. Ya know an "inspiration photot". Well done indeed! I love all your accessories too. Including the kitty!

Ditto what sheesharee said. That pic is gorgeous!

    That is a wonderful transformation!

How did you go about removing the cabinet centers?

Thank you all for your compliments. Your opinions mean a lot to me as I spend a great deal of time reading and learning from all the posters here. If anyone has a recommendation on a light fixture to replace my fugly ceiling fan in there, please let me know. I did another post about it.

I totally agree with you anele, I believe the best way for us all to "go green" and save money during this tough economy is use what we have to recycle. All these HGTV shows with "green" products made from plastics make me laugh b/c if we really want to save the planet we don't throw away perfectly good cabinets when we remodel, we use what we have when we can. I'm so lucky that the PO of my house remodeled 8 years ago and did custom cabinetry while dated is in good shape in my otherwise 1950s home. So much better quality than the factory made ones of today.

My3dogs: Concerning the lack of cushion on the chair. I am having a new down cushion made for that chair. It actually has a cain seat but is damaged and not too comfortable. Did you have any suggestions on this?

Graywings: cutting the cabinets out was tricky and I still need to fix some of them. Used a jigsaw to get them out. It was hard to get to the edge and make it clean so i have some pieces that I need to cut out more. I had planned on putting chicken wire or metal mesh stuff in the centers too but, that is pretty expensive. I think I'll just leave the curtains with no front for now. The cabinet doors are raised panel and pieced together so the middle was an seperate piece.

Gorgeous transformation to elegant and charming upscale French Country!

Just wonderful -- even the whitewashed brick makes the fireplace area look amazing!

    Tres chic! :)

Congratulations on a brilliant and "value-adding" DIY that doesn't look DIY in the least.

It is something I would never have considered doing because I liked the room the way it was. However, I would have been very wrong. The after pictures are absolutely stunning! Now I know why I'm not a decorator.

I loved the pillow in the chair, as well as the chair itself, so I'd be looking for a something in vintage needlepoint or a much loved toile like Bosporus. Something soft and worn looking, like it in the Flax colorway. See the drape panels at the link below.

If you can show us the rest of the furniture in the room, people will flock to this post with fabric suggestions!

I would love to know more about the stucco patch you used on the fireplace. I'm going to be buying a house within the next years and some of the ones I've looked at online have such ugly brick around the fireplace. Is the stuff you used actually called stucco patch?

msrose the product i used on the fireplace is called
DAP All-Purpose Stucco Patch. It's in a red, black and white container. My husband had it in the garage from our old house which was stucco on the outside. It is in a 32oz container. I have no idea if it comes in larger sizes. It's very thick. I actually rubbed it on with my hands and wiped it off. Very messy technique. I wouldn't recommend it. But, I didn't want it really thick. Wanted some of the brick to show. The other reason I did it by hand was because of the grout lines. I felt like i had to rub it in there really good. There is probably an easier way but as thick as that stuff was, I don't know. I just did it on a whim. I am no professional (LOL) for sure (Im in the IT business, definitely not a decorator). I then painted over it with really watered down flat paint to tint it off white. Hope this helps. Sorry I don't know any more about it. Some of the pros on here may be able to add some suggestions to this. I am so glad i did it! I have gotten a lot of compliments on it in person.

Here are some additional pictures below. The floor brick you can see in the 2nd one is what it looked like before I put the stucco on it.
