Do you need privacy or are you just trying to block sunlight?

You shouldn't need to cover the upper portion of the window with such a large over-hang. You could do matchstick blinds with drapery panels, which look great and is easy to maneuver.

Remove the valance and put ivory sheers on the bottom part. Painting this huge wall an accent color would give warmth to the room too.

I agree about the valance - its from a previous owner and we did not have time to change it (or rather we did not have ideas what the replacement window treatments should be).

@studio noo design: do you mean painting the wall where the sliding doors are? I really like this idea. My husband is not very keen on accent walls though, so I wil have to think through and convince him :)

There are some roller shades that could cover most of the "rectangular" part of the window leaving the "peak" exposed. Please provide aprox size of width and floor to peak of window. It could be a mesh fabric that would just do you you want= block sun and cut glare..
