Would this CL mirror work in my dining room?

I found this mirror on Craig's List and wondered if the style was just too different to go with the dining room furniture I currently have. I've been looking for a mirror to go over my buffet to replace a framed woven textile piece I have there now.

I'll try to get a better picture of the DR - here's what I have for now. The furniture is Arts & Crafts/Craftsman style.

The mirror:

It looks like it would work, as far as the style goes.

My only question is about the width of the mirror versus the width of the cabinet. I think it feels best if the mirror is just a bit smaller than the width of the cabinet below it.

Good point Les. The cabinet is 48" wide, and the ad says the mirror is 43".

Here are a couple of dark pictures of the dining room. The wood isn't quite this dark. The room doesn't get very much light at all, even with the shutters open.

I think it will look just fine and bring light to the room.

    Perfect!! lovely space your home...

I think it is great for your dr!

You have a very nice room. Bringing in a mirror will bounce more light around the room, which you will enjoy.

If I might suggest, try taping together some pieces of newspaper or other paper to create a mockup of the size of the mirror, and tape it up (painter's tape, maybe?) on the wall. It won't give you the sense of sparkle that the mirror will bring, but it will give you a visual sense of the size overall.

You are all awesome, thanks! Here's a mockup with tracer paper of the size of the mirror. What do you think?

Can anyone identify the style of the mirror?

I went to look at the mirror and it wasn't in very good shape. I could have touched up most of the dings, but there was one fairly deep gouge that I didn't think I could salvage. So I passed on that one and am continuing to look.

I'm sorry it didn't work out, because the size and look of it was good.

Have you considered a round or an oval hung sideways? Might be a nice contrast to all the very straight lines in the room.

Good luck as you hunt. Don't forget that unless you need a large mirror to be able to see something, you could do a collection of mirrors there as well.

Have you never heard of wood putty? then do your touch up? anything can be fixed...

    (Oh, good grief ...)

Annkathryn, I too am sorry that the piece wasn't in good condition. I like Les's idea for considering a round or oval mirror though. I think the contrasting shape would add even more interest and dimension to your gorgeous room. Happy hunting!

I've heard of wood putty as I've used it on a coffee table. That's how I knew that the dings could easily be fixed. It's also how I knew that I wouldn't be able to fix the deep gouge so that it would look good.

A collection of mirrors is a good idea too!

When I saw your coffee table, it reminded me of the British Classics collection by Ethan Allen. I just love the 40" round cerise mirror. Pricey, but I've seen other British classics peices on CL, so hey, you never know. If you are in NY, you will have to beat me to it. Good luck!

That mirror is gorgeous, dilly. And, um, pricey...but I'll keep it in mind when I win the lottery.

Have you thought of getting something other than a wood-framed mirror? Might provide a nice contrast to the wood in the DR.

Fillagirl I have a gold mirror that I tried, but didn't really like the look (maybe the size was wrong too).

But meanwhile I stopped into the upscale Goodwill store in my town and found just the thing. The price was right too ($26). I hung it on the existing hook - do you think it's too high?

    Yes to lowering it!

Agree lowering it a few inches would really make it look like it's meant to be there. (I don't remember the exact designer lingo, need more coffee-not awake yet!)
Love the brightening effect the mirror gives to the room--good find!
Also, that spot between the lamp and candlesticks is itching for something low and horizontal. Maybe a console bowl, or try one of the bowls in the china cab. Possibly a plant, but I'd go for something shiny to reflect in the mirror.

What a beautiful home! I think the style of the first mirror would have been great, but the one you have now looks very nice.

I love the built-in corner cabinet in your adjacent room - does it conceal your television?

We'll move the mirror down later today. In the meantime, I agree that there needs something else on the china cabinet. I'll have to play with some of my glass bowls & pottery, but here's an initial idea using a pottery bowl and some turned candlesticks my father made when I was a child. If I'm going to keep the silver candlesticks there I'd better polish them!

txcountrygal the corner cab on the left holds the TV and the one on the right holds the stereo etc. Speakers are in the top on each side. The previous owner added them. There was a thread earlier where people were kind enough to help with ideas on arranging the furniture in my living room - it's still a work in progress.

The new mirror is nice, but I agree it needs to come down a few inches.

Wonder if you would consider changing out that lamp with the one on the metal table in the other room? This one just feels off to me in here, and I think it would be more appreciated in the other space, and the simplicity of the white shaded lamp would be better here.

The candlesticks your dad made are amazing! But I think they will be lost in there. Please consider putting them in a grouping on the mantel, with soft green candles in them.

Silver candlesticks are nice there, but maybe deep red candles? I like the colorful bowl, but I would rather see a large platter (oval or rectangular, perhaps) on a stand. It would help bridge the gap between the cabinet and the mirror. Maybe something like this?

    carynthum platter

Finally, I keep forgetting to mention how much I like your DR chandelier!

Good find! Yes to lowering it... :)

Ok, mirror lowered a couple of inches, lamp moved from LR, platters stolen from other places flat & on a stand.

Love the Carynthum platter from Pier One! DH loves it too, so we might buy it. The colors are great for us. The yellow-rimmed platter & plate are from Pier One and are what we use for casual dinners with friends.

It may seem that the mirror isn't low enough, although in person it looks good to me. I haven't taken a photo from further back as my dining room table is covered with a sewing project at the moment and the room is a mess.

Les - the chandelier came with the house, and I changed out the off-white shades with some very inexpensive red ones purchased at Lowes.

Oh I just realized that Les meant swapping the DR lamp with the one on the wrought iron table in the entry hall. Ooops. Ok I'll try that one later today or tomorrow.

Annkathryn, it is funny about the lamp. You are correct, I did mean the one in the entry hall. But actually, I don't think this one is bad at all. The red picks up the color from the shades, and since you are using only one lamp, it doesn't feel like too much.

So, you can certainly give the hall lamp a try, but this is a good choice if you like it.

I love that silvery platter up on a stand, as in the second picture. The shiny middle looks good with your candle sticks. I think the other lamp that you will be putting there, per Les' suggestion, will look very nice. I like this mirror a lot better than the original one you were looking at. With the 1st mirror, I would have suggested you wack off the top piece, the cutouts and wood applique, as I didn't think they would have gone with your decor. I was glad it wasn't in good shape. You ended up with a nice mirror, more in keeping with your DR. This is fun.

Ann, I am "late to the game" but I love your DR furniture. I agree that the mirror you purchased looks much better than the first one. The first one looked a bit 1950s and didn't go with your lovely Craftsman furniture. I like the gray/silver plate on the stand, but they all look nice.

    Your house is beautiful!

I tried the other lamp from the entry hall but it was way too tall & skinny for the space. I do like the red lamp there and have 2 of them, so can keep one in the LR and use the other in the DR.

The one platter that looks silver is actually just a glazed ceramic dish that I pulled from above the TV cabinet (see the very first picture). It's mainly tan with some brown & black. I think the silver is just the reflection of the sun.

Thanks for the help, compliments & encouragement!
