What's Your Favorite Part about Sewing?

I love looking through pattern books and picking out fabric, but I don't particularly enjoy laying out the pattern, making alterations and cutting. All the tedium of precise measuring and layout is forgotten though, in that magical moment when the garment starts to come together in my hands. What is your favorite part about sewing?

For me it is the vision, I get an idea then work from there.of course I don't like laying out the pattern and cutting, sewing is fun, I just want to vision to be good. rene

I'm with you Ellen I agree with everything you said. I adore buying fabric! (small understatement)

I love the feeling of wearing something you made, knowing that before you did all that laying out and cutting, it was just a pile of paper and fabric! I also love seeing other people wearing something I made.

A new thing I've discovered I dislike is measuring people. Apparently I need to get a thicker skin and not be embarrased - how do you do that?

I also hate the bobbin thread running out with 2" left to go! And love seeing all the colours of the threads on those stands in the shops.

Above all, we wouldn't be here talking about this if we didn't love it!

    Cheers,

I love the sound of my machine. And I love the smell of pressing. I also really like the feeling of finishing the final button!

I love to cut, too. But only when the moods strikes me. I tend to cut a lot of things out and then carefully arrange them so I may get the "preliminary" steps done before I sit down for "basic construction"... I tend to get a lot of things finished in or about the same time.

Well I love using something and making it either into something else or making the original better....just that little bit more creative bit is the best way to put it. I love the sound of the machine moving along. I dislike running out of certain color thread when you need to finish a project.

I don't like the layout and cutting. I usually try to do it the night before I want to sew so I get a break between cutting and sewing.

I enjoy sewing, and pressing. I really enjoy looking through pattern books and selecting fabric.

I really dislike ripping out seams, and running out of thread too.

Buying the fabric is my favorite -- and then designing something wearable from it. Don't mind the laying out and cutting and especially love zippers and sleeves.

you have to be kidding - right? Zippers and sleeves??

I hate setting in sleeves, every time I have to do them I swear I'm going to make nothing but sleeveless garments thereafter! And zippers are always fiddly compared to a nice long seam.

I suppose maybe the satisfaction of getting them right feels nice, but I'm always tense when I turn it through to look and see if everything matches and whether I'll need to unpick ;-)

Smiles of children I've made something for. Plus refusal to take it off. Requests to "make me" not "buy me" hints for up coming special occassions. Children who don't want to go home when the visit is over because they want to sew "just a little longer". Their first concept that what they are sewing looks like something.

I like most aspects of sewing. Adjusting patterns is probably my least favorite or tied by ripping out!!!

Yes, zippers and sleeves -- I'm sick I know but I have enjoyed doing them since I was about 10. Buttonholes also come in close to a favorite. Straight seams have no personality and bore me quickly.

I am not normal -- just ask my hubby. He'll look at something I'm working on and will ask 'Can you sew anything normal?' My answer is no. Normal to me is store bought and I'd rather not go that direction.

Putting a completed outfit on and feeling proud is like the icing on the cake.

I can't believe how few said the finished product! I love fabric and I like to see how it "Looks" when it all comes together. As far as sounds go I too enjoy the sound of the machine motor as I fell asleep to the sound the first 22 years of my life. I also like the way the heavy duty scissors (ie. weiss & gingher) sound when you lay them back down on the sewing machine cabinet. I know, it's crazy, but I like that sound the best. Maybe as a kid that's what I associated with Mother(Joansews) and MaMa getting close to being done with something new for me!

I'm all for the finished product as my favorite part! But I love putting in invisible zippers...love the technique and the nice finished look of them. Also love working with wool (not much of that now that we're in Florida), and love making bound buttonholes with the Dritz gadget (see Gallery).

Wool (especially the finer weights) will keep you cool as well as warm, and I'm sure even in Florida a light jacket is sometimes required, so don't give up on it.

I love quality wool too, hate having to use a pressing cloth on it, but love the look. Wool trousers especially, they drape so beautifully.

I had my own labels made last year "Custom Made by AJK" and a little picture of an old sewing machine, so one of the new favourite bits is seeing my label inside the finished article.

AJ wool is a lovely fabric, but way "down south" Fla. south Louisiana it is not easy to find wool of any kind, I think the last I bought was wool jersey, don't have wool sweaters either, guess cotton blends are king, my Mom use to go home to Birmingham to find fabrics like that. we get cold but not enough, you make a wool jacket and you may get to wear it 1 or 2 times a year, while a blend is used all the time. Funny how different areas use different things rene
