Contemporary,traditional,country,modern? What do you say?

Hi everyone,

I have been away for quite a while, we finally moved in the new house right before Easter and we have been so busy trying to get settled, finishing up small things and getting 15 years worth of stuff out of the old house, barn and shop. Dang, I NEVER want to move again, what a PIA that has been.

I wanted to share the one side of the kitchen that is finally done, it took forever to pick out the backsplash and then another forever to drum up the courage to tackle it since I had never done something like that before(DH was the official tile layer for the floors, I grouted but it was a much different situation) I still have to finish doing the backsplash on the peninsula wall, I am so putting it off, it's not something I like doing at all....

So here we go, my mishmash of styles makes my kitchen have multiple personalities which fortunately for me makes me pretty happy. Tells you a lot about me huh?

Soapstone counters, pardon the splotchyness, I oiled them in the morning and then washed away the oil to the left of the dishwasher, should have done the rest of the counters but alas life got in the way and I took the pictures anyway...

I love, love, love my Blancomagnum sink, in this picture there is 4 people's dinner worth of dirty plates, cups and cookware and you can't see them, yippee. The Kitchenaid dishwasher is turning out to be a very wise investment, cleans great.

View towards the laundry room, please ignore the horrible chairs in the right side of the pic, we are going to put in an island but for now have our very old dining set in there. Another thing I'm loving is the travertine floors, they are so easy to keep clean. You may also notice the ends of the cabinets. To keep a very long story short our cabinet man quit us for some reason, all he lacked was the end caps, hardware and toekicks. There was no way we would ever be able to match the stain so after much deliberation we decided to cover the ends with beadboard and painted them and the toekicks the same color as the soapstone. A creative solution with an interesting look? Not sure but I can live with it...

Here's a good view of the twins, our Whirlpool sidekicks. I had DH build a cabinet under them to raise them up so they wouldn't look so squatty. Another fabulous decision, we have tons of extra storage and I don't have to bend over to see what's in the back of the fridge or freezer.

And finally my towel chicken, as much as I loved the pig I fell in love with her when I saw her :o)

Very cool! You did a good job with the tile too. Much better than the guys who did our tile. They said that you can't cut glass mosaic tile "because it's so small" and so they cut INTO MY WALL to wedge the tiles into the corner. I would have preferred if they had just stopped short of the adjacent wall but, no, they needed to make a stupid decision to keep up with their quota that day.

Your kitchen looks fab. Especially love the sink. The KD and I tried to talk DH into a SS apron front sink but no go. I wish I could have a towel animal (we'd have to choose a monkey!) but DH likes to think he's a clutter-free type. LOL!

    Yes, all of the above.

You will appreciate your choices for the kitchen even more in the future when you get bored and need a change. It is classic and neutral, but not boring, so all you have to do is to add some bold accessories and have a brand new look.

    Great Job!

Love the side by side fridges. What a great idea to elevate them on a platform. What do you store underneath?

I love it, especially the sink!
I would say modern eclectic, but what do I know...

Can you tell me more about your cabinets? I love the rich color!

Thanks to everybody for their nice comments! It's nice to know that somebody else thinks it looks good since I can be such a dork with decorating choices. There are so many gorgeous kitchens on here and I had never seen one with dark cabinets and dark counters, I wasn't sure it would work.
The sink was a lucky score on Ebay and I love it to!
Neesie, right now I have my large pots under the twins but I still have room to spare.
Huango, the cabs were custom stained, no names just told him what I wanted and then ok'ed that particular color sample.
I think I might be feeling inspired to tackle the rest of the backsplash so I can post pictures and all you nice people can make me feel good again. LOL

I'd just say beautiful!! Great job!!

Your kitchen reminds me of my new master bath I'm putting together. Long time ago I saw some gorgeous light fixtures I had to have and they are over the top beautiful crystal and nickle and modern. I spent so much on lighting fixtures that wnen it came time for the cabinets/vanities I tried to find a way to save money. So I opted for some inexpensive, yet very nice vanities that are more of an antique style. Then we come to the flooring and shower. Well, the shower is now going to be glass block, which I believe is pretty generic when it comes to style, and the flooring is porcelain tile in a beige stone look. The walls are a gray/green/blue. So I'm holding my breath waiting to see what all these different elements look like when they are all in place in the same room. If nothing else, I'll just tell people it's shabby/chic!! My poor DH who doesn't know that much about interior design keeps reassuring me it will all look beautiful. I do so want to believe him!! That's what I'm going on right now and hoping for the best.

    Your kitchen is fabulous!!

Love you kitchen and the choices. It is beautiful! I would call it transitional. It looks great. Can't wait to see the other parts of it when you finish that backsplash. Love the tile you chose. It is so pretty!

How interesting that there weren't many examples of dark counters with dark cabinets, but the great way your sink counter came out should inspire a lot more. If I were doing dark cabinets I think I'd want to go for that look; it gives it such great presence. Pointing out that there's a family meal's worth of dishes in that sink should cause some quickened breathing too. Looking forward to more pictures!

    Thanks again everyone!
I guess it doesn't really need a label but transitional eclectic does sound interesting doesn't it? smile.

    brutuses,
Can't wait to see your bathroom, it sounds beautiful.
