How eclectic is too eclectic?

I think I've about hit 'that' wall today. ;) Not sure how this is going to fly in my cottage .. but I'm going to give it a shot.

I stopped by habitat for humanity with my youngest DD today and we found a huge french country 'vintage knockoff' bookcase .. it's very soild with chippy green paint over top and has nice iron grids in the doors. The paint is a good deal off and what's left is loose, so it will need to be repainted .. the price was good though, $50.00.

These are awful pics, all I had with me was my cell phone. We'll pick it up on Saturday, when my DH is home with the truck .

As far as repainting it, I was thinking either a light aqua or white or black. What do you guys think?

The half curtians will be coming down :

zipdee, I think it will work wonderfully. And what a deal at only fifty dollars! I can't wait to see it painted. My vote would be white with a light aqua interior.
Of course I'm saying that without picturing your home. My brains been fried this week since my sleep pattern was wacked out last Friday night.

I'm certainly not gonna judge "how eclectic is too eclectic", having pretty much a mishmash of all sorts of things in my house, but I gotta say - this is a nice find! I think white (distressed?) with an aqua interior would be just fab. Go for it!

I think it would look great painted. Where are you thinking of putting it?

I think it is a rockin great find! Love it!

Now that is a bargain! I like the antiqued white and aqua option that auntjen suggested.

Well, nothing is too eclectic for me.

Whatever color you decide on, you might think of accenting the French top a bit and downplaying the base (as in, make sure it's a solid color). The top is to die for, but the bottom is tilting toward a Mediterranean look, IYKWIM.

What a fabulous find. We've donated to Habitat, but I've never been in the store. Don't suppose they deliver, for an extra charge, huh?

I love the idea of white with an aqua interior! You guys are awesome. :) I think that will look wonderful.

There's one of three places this can go .. my office or the master bedroom to be used as an actual bookcase .. or in the hall across from the kitchen, if placed there I think it would look wonderful filled with ironstone dishes.

Yup, Parma .. I know exactly what you mean. I've noticed a lot of these vintage knockoffs seem to have those funky doors on their french 'styled' pieces. The top is nice though and I think the real iron grids in the doors make the whole thing, without those I'm not sure if it would have caught my eye at all.

I'm not sure if HH delivers or not in the city, we live about 30 minutes away from the closest one though. The one I go to is a very hit or miss place, sometimes I walk in and find nothing, other times I find great things. It's totally worth stopping in if we're in the area though.

I love it. Great buy! I think you should stick it in the hall or office first if it will work. You should show it off.

I'm seeing it in creamy white and think it will be perfect in a cottage. Well done!

Photos, please, when you are done.

Can't wait to see what you do with this! Maybe you could change out the lower doors (having someone make them, if need be, probably wouldn't be expensive).

Hard to tell from the pics, but is there any way to leave it unpainted? I know you guys have the paint thing down, but I just wonder if it might not add something different to your space...

Well I've been doing a little digging .. I'm not sure how these doors are put together yet .. but take a look at what this very inventive lady did with these pieces.

What a great job she did chipping all that stuff off, it really updated the pieces. Crossing my fingers something might work like that for me .. hmmmmmm.

Amy .. I'm honestly not sure .. I'll post better pics on Sat. and you guys can take a look. From what I could see of the under layer, I think I was looking at a very unattractive stained ( maybe pickled ) oak.

Okay .. I've thought of a fourth area to use this in and I'm kind of warming up to it :) The master bathroom area, which will be a longer room than it is wide. I'm thinking this along one wall to hold supplies, towels and such.

    Something along these lines :

Here's a few cabs painted white with aqua interiors :

Ooooooooohhhhhhhhh! You did good! I love the white with aqua interior idea. But there are probably lots of colors that would work. Use what you love! : )

I think it's perfect! Have fun with it. Good eye Zip!

Great inspiration pictures zipdee. I'm liking the bathroom idea. I did something similar on a smaller scale for towels and supplies for our bathroom....

Thanks guys for the kind comments and help! I'll let you all know more tomorrow when I get it home and see where we stand on re-painting and possibly re-working the bottom doors. I'm crossing my fingers that the stuff on the doors are wood appliques that might come off with some work, leaving a cleaner look.

JGTBM .. I remember that re-do, what a clever way to update your cabinet. It turned out wonderful and looks perfect filled with your bathroom supplies.

Zipdee that is a great find, I never can find anything but junk in HH.

I love big cabinets like that in bathrooms filled with big white lush fluffy towels and toiletries.

Shoot you could use that cabinet anywhere in your house filled with old white Ironstone or any collections you have.

I just love big old cabinets is what I am trying to say.

    Good for you Zipdee!
