What do you have on your wall above your bed?

Hi!

My son is the lucky recipient of a bedroom makeover while he is away at camp this week! He is turning 13 soon and I want to make his room more "him". He is into geography and has a collection of mini international flags in his room. He also has a couple full size flags that I plan to hang in the corners. I saw this metal art fixture and thought about putting it above his bed. It is pretty large, 46" wide x 26" high. (his bed is a full, so a little more than 55 inches wide). It weighs 10 pounds. It is crazy to put something like this above his bed? Any other suggestions? We don't live in an eartquake zone. What do you have above your bed? above your kid's bed's?

Thanks!!

Elaine

I think that's a pretty awesome piece. Would look great behind the bed especially in a boy's room. Just make sure that you hang it in a stud or use some really good wall anchors. Maybe pull the bed out about and inch or so from the wall that way if it falls it will go straight down. I have a very heavy mirror hanging behind my guest bed and it's been fine (and I didn't use proper hanging hardware). Sounds like a cool room!!

I'm new here and I need help. My family room is 17' long and 10'-9" wide - like a shoe box. You walk in the room and you see the far wall with one window facing the door. The exterior wall on the left has a 7' bay window. The television is placed on the left wall as you walk in (in the corner next to the door so it faces the far window). I have a couch on the long wall across from the bay window and two arm chairs in the corners next to the smaller window on the other short wall. The ceiling is cathedral so the room is bright but it's crowded. I am re-doing the room so I was thinking a grey/green/beige color (I have oak trim and floors) and I want to buy new furniture to provide enough seating for entertaining. Question- should I buy a smaller sofa to fit on the far wall (only 10' 9") and then place chairs on the long wall? Should I keep a larger sofa on the long wall across from the window and place chairs in front of the bay window across from the soafa (might be a tight fit). If I do that, what would go nicely under the window on the short wall at the far end (under a window). Confusing, but thanks for your help.

I think adding some antique maps would look great too. You can find them on ebay. Check out some antique globes, they could be pricey, I'm not real sure.

I almost bought a map from 1895 of Alabama, wish I had.

    Hi Elaine,

On Real Estate intervention on HGTV tonight, Sabrina Soto(Designer) framed 3 maps from a large book she bought. She bought ready made frames and added the maps. They looked great. I have posted a link for the book she used below. Notice that it is 17" x 14" - a large book.

You could also buy a vintage atlas off of Ebay and do the same thing.

    Sounds like a great room!

    Hello!

Thank you all for your suggestions! I loved the piece so much, I bought it last night. I wish it could arrive before my son returns from camp, but it won't. We've been working on the room each night. I'll post pics when it is done. I'm shopping for a couple of accent pillows tonight, then I can put it all together!

Les - oh I LOVE the decal!!! I should have held off until I read all of my responses. I get to excited and impatient with my decorating sometimes.

I would definitely hang an up-to-date world map if he is into geography. Vintage maps are cool (more adult, though, in my mind), but I think a 13 year-old would really get into identifying all those places in the news these days. With so many people unable to find countries like Afganistan or Malaysia on the map, a contemporary map would certainly be useful as well as beautiful. He could plot perfect vacations, too! Maybe a mix of new with antique if the size of the room permits it. That could also lead to investigations of the history behind the maps. Can you tell that I am a teacher? LOL. I think it is way cool that he is into geography and way cool that you are fixing up his room for him!

cyn427, actually he is the type that would really get into the vintage maps, although I just got him a standard world map. He knows how the continents have changed over time and even asked me for different maps from different dates. There isn't a country that he doesn't know about, he can tell you exactly where any country is, he knows the capitals of all countries and he can identify each countries flag! I have learned a LOT from him! He has been devouring world atlases since he was 2. I'll post pics of the room asap.

    Thanks!
