Blue & Brown color scheme...is it outdated now?

I love my bedroom wall color which is an aqua blue/green color. Would like to redo our bedroom this christmas as a gift for DH & I and thinking of adding brown to the bedding. Just wondering if that color combo is going out of style? I know it has been very popular for a couple yrs now just don't want to do a color scheme that is outdated right after I do the room. Below is a link to a bedding set I've been eyeballing. What do you think. Have to remember to stay away from being matchy matchy so is it bad to buy a bedding set rather than looking for pieces all individually?

Here is a link that might be useful: Bedding set

I love the color combo, but I made myself not buy a bedding set today because it was those colors. I think it'll date really quickly. That being said, it's just bedding so you can always switch it when it starts to bother you.
I did buy another bedding set which I have never done before. I always buy individual pieces, but that's why our bed has never looked "done". Chances are I won't use the entire set at once and I'll keep the RH coverlet, sheets, and shams I have now to break it up.

In my opinion that color combo has been beat to death and back again a few times. But then it is how my bedroom is done- go figure.
The obligatory response here is to say that if you like it then do it and don't worry about the trends.
However, you will end up with a bedroom that 50% of middle America has. Like me.

Yeah that is what I thought! So if I want to keep my aqua color, what color should I put with it? Most of my home is done in a british colonial/west indies look. Open to suggestions. I have a sitting room/office off of my bedroom and the aqua is on an accent wall in there & furniture is distressed cream with medium stained wood tops. So I was going to get a medium stain wood color bedroom furniture, my aqua walls and cream, but should I add the brown or another accent color?

I think black would look great with it.

You can go crazy and use orange, fuschia, or lime green for accents.

Maybe you can step back from the dark brown and use the taupe color shown in the photo. Adding pillows, a throw, chairs or artwork in the bright colors will keep it from looking exactly like that popular color combo.

I like Lyfia's suggestion of black added in, as well.

I saw that combo, not long ago on HGTV, so I'm guessing it's very In ???

Aqua or robin's egg blue looks fantastic with a tomato red colour. I have seen a few rooms with those predominant colours in higher end shelter magazines over the past year, so you probably have about 5 years with that combination (assuming it catches on). If it doesn't catch on, you have a beautiful, unique room that may last indefinitely.

Some shades of yellow work very well with some shades of spa blue.

White or cream/ecru/off-white is also classic.

Dusty rose (not a bubble gum bright pink) or salmon can work well, especially if it's a dull blue (as in the bedding in your link); if you have a brighter hue, try the tropical/beach color theme.

And a lighter or darker shade of the same blue also is terrific.

I like that trendy spa blue color (actually I love all shades of blue) but never got the dark brown accent -- why muck up a perfectly good light bright blue with that dark depressing color? (apologies to those who love the combination -- it's JMO).

I have mostly aqua bedding and green walls and orange is my accent color. I think men like orange.

    That's a great combo amysrq.

    What's your green?

For an energizing feel, how about a terra-cotta shade? Or for calming and cool, gray and silver?

I love olive drab, aqua and tomato.

My bedroom walls are a terracotta color and I have taupe and aqua accent pillows and towels in my bath. I LOVE the way the brown and aqua look together, but it is very overdone. I think you'd be really happy with something terracotta and taupe to offset the coolness of the aqua!

This is NOT my quilt (I wish!!), but this is the color scheme I was talking about..... not sure if the quilt is your style, but the colors look so nice together!!

Hi Parma....it's Farrow & Ball Vert de Terre.

Do what you want and don't worry about whether it will be dated or out of style soon. It's your bedroom and not that many people will see it anyway. Even if it were your livingroom, do what you want.

That being said, I have been trying to create a sky blue and chocolate color scheme and finally gave up when I realized that there were no rugs with those predominant colors, nor were there many fabrics. So I've tweaked my colors: the blue is more peacock or ocean, and the brown is more bronze or copper. I'm convinced that when I'm finally done decorating, the newest color scheme will be sky blue and chocolate. I just can't wait that long.

If you really like the color combination, then you should use it and not worry about it becoming outdated since it is still very neutral. I think people get hung up on the outdated thing.

Color is subjective like art. Every eye is different and you should use the colors that appeal to you and not everyone else. JMHO

Amysrq, I'll bet it looks just lovely. For some reason, I am always drawn to rooms that have been painted in F&B much more than any other paint, even EK or DK.

I wish I would have spent more time and invested in F&B samples. At the time, I didn't know they had their paint available for delivery and thought I couldn't get it in the Midwest.

I am on the side of do what you like!! We just built a new home and I did things (Lived in other house 7 yrs)that I love because I could. I used uba tuba granite in my kitchen and I LOVE it.(some think whey over used) And my master bath is a Taupey brown. Master bdrm is blue(maybe leaning toward the aqua but definitely blue. Sometimes it is a $$$ factor. I would have used all marble in master bath, but got to the point of cutting costs. So my tile had tan, beige, brown and white in it and did the other rooms accordingly. At home goods I found towels with the main color being that same blue on the bdrm walls with a , brown & taupe design. Someday when I have time I am going to figure out how to post pictures. I love brown & blue and for children/girls brown & pink is nice.

Our guest room is in aqua and taupe with coral accents. I hoped the photo might help as the style is British Colonial too. I was not concerned about the outdated trend issue as I think this color combination is classic and suited to the style. This room will probably still be the same when the trend comes around again! :)

I think that the blue & brown trend may simply be shifting to different shades of blue & brown. That being said I am planning a brown & blue room whether it be considered in or out of fashion. If you like it then do it!

If you plan NOT to use it for the next 10 years, you're okay. But realistically, even in the next 2 years it *might* be viewed as colors that were a trend back in the 'Bush Administration'. LOL But you should do what you love.

I would opt for a neutral comforter/duvet/bedspread and use only pillows/throw in the blues and browns. Pillows can be much easier changed out than a whole matching set.

Parma, the F&B paint has a finish unlike any other IME. Never say never....you may need a new color someday down the road. I never paint a room just once! ;-)

ttodd, as you say that I realize that my DD's new room will be a variation on the theme. The walls will likely be Philipsburg Blue and the carpet a shade of taupe, not unlike the color of dirt. (Can you guess why?!) So, I guess it's blue and brown all over again.

    Sis

I love the color of your room! Can you tell me what it is? Looks very soothing.

I just got a catalog from Restoration Hardware with their new baby and kids line and they show blue and brown so maybe it's not out yet. If you love it do it.

Thank you denali, my guests seem to like the room and comment that it is very restful. The color is BM's Woodlawn Blue.

Yes I've seen that color. I think it is on the same strip as Whethersford grey which we may paint my grandsons room.

I just did Gossamer blue in my PR and am not a blue person but Iam loving some of these blues.

    Denali 2007,

I too received my RH Child & Baby & loved the blue & brown. While it'd be nice for baby #3 to be a girl (already have 2 boys) I keep finding myself drawn to the blue & brown bedding in RH.

This is YOUR house....do as you want....and to heck worrying about following "trends"....they all come and go, so follow your heart.....if YOU like it, go for it~~~
They keep making up the new trends to keep us buying new products...and sometimes we don't even really like them, but we think we need to keep with the latest things.
I happen to love that relaxing soft aqua/gray color...and even if it will be dated....I plan to use in my next house.

    ttodd

You could still do the blue and brown for a girl. That's the nice thing about that bedding. It looks so neutral. The green is lovely also. I had 2 boys then a girl and all she ever had was pink!!! She now hates pink.

I love the brown/blue combination and just redid a bedroom into a dressing room but had the same thoughts of it being too much of a fad (Love the George W. comment! lol). I painted the walls milk chocolate, have cream colored frieze carpet and sour cream color vanity and dresser. I used the aqua/blue as an accent color for an upholstered chair, small painted cabinet and an area rug by the vanity in shades of aqua/seafoam, cream and bit of rust. This way I can change those things if I tire of it. I need to post some pics but my digital camera is just awful and can't get the colors to appear true on screen.

How about cream colored bedding and use chocolate just as an accent in throw pillows, picture frames, and other accent items? I picture a nicely done cream colored hand stitched quilt with matching shams with your beautiful color on the walls.

I'm hopeless and out of date before I even know it. Shoot! I knew I was bad at this. LOL!

I just painted our master bedroom/bath SW Drizzle, which is transitions from blue to green, depending on the light. I bought chocolate brown and taupe bedding.

The powder and laundry room (which are right next to the master) are just a tish darker with SW Studio Blue Green. I put a tera cota mosiac tile in there, so maybe there is some hope for me. ;-)

I think I'm going to love the space. We are on a lake and I was trying to pull the water "in". Hopefully, people won't think it is outdated, but if they do, so be it. I really like the combination and think it will be a calming room. I say, do what appeals to you!

Tinker - that sounds so pretty!

I have SW Windowpane which is a pale aqua/ I have two bedding sets: one is white quilted matelesse, and the other is a cream down blanket. One bedskirt is white and the other is a cream and green print. I have a mix of fruitwood furniture from 40s and painted furniture. I am still doing room but chose simple bedding to make a classic look. I have wood blinds and will have flower prints on the walls. ALmost a cottage look but without the cute in it. I chose great quality but simple bedding that will last for years as will the furniture style. BUT if you want to make your room trendy go ahead. The most important thing is that the room is beautiful to you.

If you go with ANY color scheme because it's "in style" it will be out of style in the blink of an eye. If you go with it because you LOVE it, you may grow tired of it eventually, but it will last a lot longer.
I have blue and brown. I've had it since before it became the in thing to do and I still love it.

This is interesting. It never occurred to me that blue/brown could be outdated. My grandmother used this as her primary color combo in much of her house, and it was decorated in the 1930's. My mother inherited a fondness for this combo, and did much of her house with it. So I've been surrounded with it forever. About 15 years ago, I saw a Martha Stewart image of a room with (painted) brown trim, and blue walls. I sighed happily, and thought of grandmother's house.

So, I have always thought of it as timeless.
