Inspiration Pics/Ideas needed for teen DD's room (B&W, turquoise)

DD (age 15) and I are going to do a mini makeover of her room this summer. DD and I don't exactly have the same taste and past attempts have been compromises between us two with neither liking the end result and current look is just a hodgepodge. She is also very messy and doesn't take care of her stuff--leaves clothes, books, etc. on the floor, tossed in the closet, etc. Her makeup gets everywhere and bedding gets stained with that as well as highlighters, pens since she'll sit on her bed and do homework. Since I don't think it's my job to cleanup after her, it's my hope that if we can get her room looking nice, perhaps she'll take more care to keep it that way. I would think she'd be embarrased to have her friends see it--but guess they don't care--she says her friends have messy rooms too. Long way of saying, I don't want to expend too much effort or money--unless her habits improve. Bedding needs to be simple and washable.

Here room is very small (9'x9' - smallest room in the house), all the furniture will stay the same, though I'll probably get some baskets to put in her bookshelf--to store her stuff and have it look a little less cluttered. Here are some before pics so you can see what we're working with:

We've agreed on the following color scheme: black & white bedding and turquoise walls. I told her she needs to stick with a cool color for her walls since her room gets the afternoon sun and she has hardwood floors. Actual selection of wall color is going to be a challenge again to find a shade we can agree on. She like a more vivid, saturated color which is why I suggested the B&W bedding--trying to avoid another case of overload. It's only paint right? I was thinking we could perhaps paint her ceiling a paler shade of the same instead of white--so as to make her room appear a little larger.

We like this look by PB teen: (except in white&black):

I'm a bit stymied what to do about the sheets--or which of the two bedding ensembles to recommend. The zebra duvet prob. would look better with darker walls, but the dots would be better at hiding stains. Should sheet coordinate like in the pic or we could do a solid turquoise sheet. DD likes black, but I think that may feel too hot or fade. I'm also considering white--which I can bleach if it gets stained.

Also like this valance and rod:

Or could just do some white sheers (prob. a hard sale in DD who likes color)

Given the above what are some good turquoise colors to consider (Benjamin Moore preferable)? She'd like a vibrant jewel color--but how dark can we go? Then, what color for ceiling? I'd so like to do a paler shade with some pops of turquoise color in baskets and pillows. I try to show her pics, but she has her own ideas and bottom line, it's room room. Any suggestions appreciated in letting her express her love for color without overdoing it or picking yet another compromise solution neither or us like. She's even mentioned redoing the racing stripe, but I feel it breaks up the room and makes it feel even smaller and suggest a more cohesive wall color (if she'd go paler I'd even put it on the ceiling). I think I need to back off on this and let her express herself--just wanted to give some background of suggestions I've alreay made. But, perhaps some inspiration pics may help sell her on the idea.

What about spray painting the folding bookcase black?

Also, need some ideas for bulletin boards for all her pics.

My teen daughter recently did her turquoise and black and white. After sampling wayyy too many colors, we finally settled on Behr Cloudless. A year later we still love it. It is a gorgeous turquoise.

bestyears: Thanks for the paint recomendation. I'll check it out. I'd love to see pics of your DD's room to show my DD. It might help her with her paint choice to see a whole room done with that color scheme.

I like your color scheme very much, you can choose any blue you want.
I do, however, feel the room is disjointed and maybe crowded. Have you thought about getting rid of the the headboard and giving the room more of a "lounge" feel? If you don't want to get rid of headboard, loosing the footboard will give you some extra space.
Also, by painting some of the furniture pieces a different color (black? silver?) will give the room some personality. I have a rough sketch, maybe this will help.
Also, definately paint the ceiling, either a lighter version of the walls, or a contrasting color, but nail down the wall color first.

boxerpups: Thanks for all the pics and recommendations. Dd likes the blue in the room with the sofa. Also your DS's teal is nice so we'll check those out as well.

paintergirl: Oh my, you are such a wonderful artist! I would love to do as you suggest--only the bed would then bump into the closet. Her room is that small! :( I had been considering doing shorter panels. You make it look very nice.

    Keep the ideas coming!

Just painted my son's room Florida Keys Blue(BM 2050-40) on a recommendation from this forum. I first I thought it would be too much, but it is a beautiful color, a little more teal than turquoise but I would check it out. It is a pottery barn color - they also have a beautiful color in the collection called Robin's Nest, which is lighter a more like a turquoise.

Florida Keys Blue - not as dark in person in my son's room, really lovely

Robin's Nest, more turquoise than above but looks beautiful in the photo.

Sometimes it is nice to have a smaller sections of colors to look at....

I love what paintergirl94 has done. Is it possible to remove the closet door and replace it with a bi-fold door to give more space?

Your daughter is probably not going to be at home for many more years. Even if you don't like the paint color she chooses, it becomes temporary, right?

I know you said turquoise walls and B&W bedding, but just in case, thought I'd show you this pic. It's from the Bed, Bath & Beyond sales flyer I got in today's mail (along w/ a $5 coupon on the back). The $80 set includes revers. comforter, sham(s), bedskirt, 2 deco pillows, wall decals, and a canopy. Probably not the best quality, but given how quickly teens' taste can change, sounds like a lot of bang for your buck :-)

Or this set, Roxy "Alexis" duvet cover set for $100, but doesn't include as many accessories:

If she sits on the bed to do homework, she's not going to change that habit now, so why not buy something like this:

    (from walmart.com, $19)
It would give her somewhere close at hand to stash pens, highlighters, etc. instead of on the bed.

If you sew, sew4home did a teen room makeover with lots of ideas (different color scheme though)

I would get rid of the piece of furniture that looks like a changing table. She has shelves above the desk and that would free up more space. I really like the idea of removing the headboard and footboard to make it more of a daybed. If you take the doors off of the closet you could hang a simple solid color curtain to conceal the closet. For my daughter's 16th birthday we did a black and white and turquoise color scheme. We took our queues from the delia's bedset linked below.

I recently did a bedroom similar and we put sliding doors on the closet. And to dress those up, did hand painted panels in a damask pattern (purple and green) on the doors and a piece of trim at the top to hide the mechanism. I was thinking you'd gain room by removing the head and foot boards, but my designs are better than my measuring!
Anyway, your daughter is very lucky to have a mom that would go through all this!

I absolutely love paintergirl's ideas-nice job! Any chance you can move the bed to the other wall-by making it a daybed area, it would feel very lounge like and teen-friendly!

I just redecorated my daughter's room-she is 12-going on 21...just kidding! But, she wanted the Tiffany Blue room with black and white accents-this is what we came up with-oh, we are still waiting for TB velvet cornices with nailhead trim. Also, we used BM Waterfall as an inspiration-we painted her walk-in closet this color and then used it as accents throughout the room.

shellfish, that room is right up my alley!! Just perfect!!

shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet.

DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting.

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes.

I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?

After all this agonizing in my mind, it was actually very easy for us to agree on a color. I picked up a lot of swatches from BM today and picked one that looked most like some of the inspiration pics above and showed it to DD. She was in the car with a friend at the time and asked to see the other swatches--within 5 mins. both girls actually liked my choice the best. At first DD considered some even more darkly saturated colors, but her friend told her they were too dark (and of course, DD listeded to her!!). So, the color we picked is called Bahaman Sea Blue by Benjamin Moore. I'm thinking of doing her ceiling in Jamaican Aqua which I used in her younger sister's room which is directly across the hallway.

I was able to create an inspiration pic of our choices by using the personal color view in BM along with a bedding pic from the PB website. We're thinking of doing the b/w dotted duvet with the zebra sheets and zebra valance (and perhaps short panels) pictured above. Unforuntely, I couldn't find a way to download the pic so had to print/scan so color is not really accurate, but here is what we've agreed on (of course, I will put a sample on the walls first):

When I googled it seems that the character in Gossip Girl used it for her office. See below

Will sit on this a few days before ordering the bedding.
