try "lamps and shades" in glen ellyn just off 355 and roosevelt rd on main street. its across the side street from the shopping center with the trader joe's store on roosevelt rd. ive had good luck there.

Northern Lights in Winnetka. Quite pricey, though.

There is a place called "A Shade Better" in Westmont, IL. At Ogden Ave and just off Route 83 (Kingery Expressway). They sell ready-made as well as custom shades.

The best antique lighting store I know of in greater Chicago is Cavalier Lighting - 4400ish N. Ashland. It's in the ground floor "apartment" of a brownstone building, on the west side of Ashland. You won't find cloth shades there, though.

Wow, les, I'm so happy to see that A Shade Better is still in the area. I used to go to their location in the Wheeling/Buffalo Grove area, but that store closed quite awhile ago. They do have an excellent selection of shades, so, akchicago, you should have good luck there.

Thank you everyone! Interestingly, I got separate recommendations from a couple of friends for Lamps & Shades in Glen Ellyn, and for A Shade Better in Westmont, both mentioned in this thread. Can anyone tell me what would be the difference between those two shops in style, selection, helpfulness (I WILL need help that's for sure!), etc.?

And of course, if anyone has other recommendations, let me know. Thanks!

at lamps and shades you bring in your lamp. the ladies then run around the store and keep trying different lamp shades on the lamp. they are pricey too. but the shades are excellant quality.

I went to a Shade Better in Westmont and did not personally like it very much. I didn't think the shades were anything unusual, and the saleswoman had a bit of an attitude with me.

Next on my list is the Glen Ellyn shop-- so close to me, but not open too late during the week. There is a coupon for 20% off. It looks like they have vintage shades, too, which I think is a huge plus!
