Mirror or picture in entryway?

I will be getting a new console table tomorrow for my foyer/entry. Is putting a mirror above it more functional or simple/timeless than finding just the right piece of art?

The door is only used by guests who are not close enough to come around the deck or through the garage entrances. (So it is not going to be used to primp, at least I don't see that in the future!)

Does Art add more pizazz?

I always like a mirror in the entry...it opens up what is usually not a very big space, and you can check your lipstick and your hat and your scarf on the way out the door.

I still also like a mirror over a console. You can 'pretty up' the console with a small lamp and a decorative accessory or 2. (not to say that some great artwork wouldn't look wonderful as well!)

I prefer art since, like yours, it's not used as the main family exit. Unless you feel the need to check yourself for the FedEx or UPS guys I'd say go with art. ;^)

I'd choose mirror even if it isn't the main family exit. I always give myself a quick check before answering the door. I might not care what the UPS guy thinks of me, but I do want to make sure my hair isn't looking crazy when a neighbor or friend pops by.

A mirror -- with a small lamp on the table. I like to see a bit of sparkle during the day -- and an extra lighting option at night!

I vote for a mirror too!

I have a mirror in my foyer, and like the light reflections. Be careful in placing art in areas with alot of sun light exposure, the pictures will turn even if the sun isn't hitting it directly.

laxsupermom, when you've lived your whole life with natural curly hair, you know that whatever you do there will always be some goofy curl out of control. I've learned to think of it as charming just to keep my sanity. Which by the way I've only half of that left. Ha! :^P
Photobucket is back to normal this morning so I'll add a picture of our foyer. No worries about anything fading we have a covered porch, though I doubt my painted crosses would fade. I feel as though the foyer is a welcoming to guests and art is more welcoming to me than a mirror. Though a small mirror in the drawer might not be a bad idea.

justgotabme, hee hee. I have the exact opposite hair. Straight, limp, the more humid it is the straighter it is. But I figure checking my hair sounds so much more refined than checking my face for chocolate. Yes, I'm a beater licker. I've never made a batch of brownies or cookies that I didn't put a licked clean bowl & utensils in the DW afterwards. BTW, I love your entryway composition. So very pretty.

Thank you laxsupermom, I started collecting the crosses before we moved in. I was going to hang them as they were, but it was just too busy so I painted the dry brushed them all.
And a ha ha ha to your checking your face for chocolate. Never thought of that reason. Maybe I do need to add a mirror in the drawer. I'm always eating something chocolate. Just finished a bit of pudding actually. Ya got me whiping my face and feeling my lips for bits I may have missed. I'll be heading to a mirror as soon as I hit send!

Below is my table, any suggestion of mirror?
The floor is maple. The table is cherry with maple on the drawer fronts.

The table is near cherry stairs with black iron spindles. Also opens into great room with black leather sofa.

Been knocking myself out on-line trying to find the perfect mirror and it is exhausting me!!!

I vote for a mirror, although I really like your display of crosses.

I vote for a mirror too. However, it does bring to mind another question that tags along with this one. If you have a center hall with the dining room to the right (or left)through a large case opening and have a mirror in the foyer, what do you place over the buffet/sideboard that is directly across the way? I'm asking because most of the time I see a mirror over the buffet too. Isn't that too much mirror?

whenicit, think you have the prefect name. At least for this thread. Love you table. Check link below, but it would help if we saw picture of your stairway and other surrounding areas.

What about something like this one? It's from Williams Sonoma Home, and is $395...There is a smaller (and admittedly less graceful) version on MoreMirrors.com for half the price, if this one is too spendy.

That is a very cool mirror!

After I posted the link above I saw one very similar to that on their site too bronwynsmom. I love it!

juddgirl - those are not my crosses BTW

honeychild - I don't have a DR so no worry about too many mirrors

Thanks - I love the Williams Sonoma mirror, will have to check it out and the cheap version.

Funny, this morning I used the basement bathroom after working out and there above my very own basement sink was a black framed mirror - round too! I took it upstairs to test it with my family and we all liked it. It is not quite decorative enough to use but it is 32x32 so I have a good idea of the size I need and I think a round will look best.

In the picture below, the table is now across and to the left of the stairway.

Some other things are now hung on the wall and a different thing is on the mantle (art) but generally you get the idea. The mission sconces below frame french doors. I like the sconces but I don't really have a mission style house...
