I paid my builder $8400 to "upgrade" his standard Merillat Essentials cabinets (all particleboard, flimsy glides, veneer doors) to "Classic Deluxe" solid oak doors,, thicker shelves, dovetailed (maple?) drawers with plywood bottoms and FE glides (not softclose). Kept the same cabinet (particleboard) construction, hoped the drawer upgrade would be good enough since all-plywood construction was out of the budget. $700 of that was just the separate drawer upgrade for 2 18" base cabinets, 1 27" base cabinet, a 36" base cabinet with 3 drawers, and a 60" bathroom vanity with 3 drawers.

So even if your cabinets are particleboard, I'd say your "starting" price is reasonable - who did you get quotes from?
