Off Topic - Indiana Jones Party

Off topic - I am going to host an Indiana Jones party where we eat, drink, and watch the first 3 Indiana Jones movies before going to see the 4th one.

Any ideas on food that is relatively easy to make yet kinda exotic or would fit well in that theme? Preferably little appetizer type items. Any creative ideas for decorating?

At first I got all excited thinking you were extending an invitation :) It doesn't matter anyway, I live on the wrong coast.

If there's one thing that screams Indiana Jones, it's monkey brains. I'm not advocating serving actual monkey brains, but how about making something look like them? OK, so maybe it's a bit gross, but very much in the spirit of Temple of Doom. Apparently Calvin (of Calvin & Hobbes) already thought of this.

Oooh you are inspiring me now! Maybe I'll just have to copy your great idea - you in Bothell and me in Is'quah- dueling ends of King County!!

How about trying eyeballs - didn't they eat them in TOD? I know there are candy versions and bugs too! That was really TOD. You might look at creepy food for Halloween to help.

Also, candy gems.... oh, I could go on and on!

The problem I have is, I plan on going to the earliest matinee possible, so I have to start watching at midnight.

The only thing better than Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, was when they brought in my other boyfriend Sean Connery in the third!

Wow... cool stuff. I thought it would be a fun topic and also a good one for other people to copy and use our collective brain power so feel free to copy away mindimoo! When I came up with the idea my DW said she was shocked that I would come up with such a cool idea that both my guy friends and her girl friends could get into. I don't know if that is a compliment or an insult :)

My DW and I immediately thought of monkey brains and snakes as well. Tarantulas too.

I am not sure when we will have the party... opening weekend will be so crowded that you'd have to get in line so early that it would take away from fun of the party. Also a lot of the guests have had responses like "I want to come to the party part but I promised my dad I would see the 4th movie with him" so we might even have the party with the first 3 movies on a saturday and watch the 4th movie a different day.

Funny, I just borrowed my friend's IJ DVD set so we can watch them with our kids before the new one comes out. Hadn't thought of a party-- I was gonna say a snake cake, but jenellecal beat me to it!!!!

    "Bad dates"

Or, since you aren't trying to poison your guests.... GOOD DATES! Perhaps a goat cheese stuffed date with glazed pecan on top?

    mm-do you mean me...? LOL

Boy am I out of touch!! When does it come out????

B/w my new, very stressful, job and kitchen, I didn't realize it was coming out soon!

Jenellecal....thanks for that cake link...I "specialize" in homemade cakes like these for my kids' birthdays. Even at 11 & 13 they get excited about what cake they'll have this year...although my poor DD lost out this year as our kitchen has been non-functional since 1/21 and her b'day was in March...but I did promise her a belated b'day party AND homemade b'day cake as soon as the kitchen is back together! (She got a store-bought cake this year)

I don't do the "fancy" frosting type cakes (you know, with the roses, etc.), rather I "build" them out of pieces of cake that I bake and then cut to build. I've been short on ideas the last couple of years but now I have a whole new site to inspire me!

Another one who thought we were getting an invite. How cool would that be! Now I'm trying to think if I could pull this off with my crowd of young parents... *sigh*

    Licorice whips!

    Beetles/roaches (nuts dipped in chocolate)

    Stepped-on fortune cookies

Make that wine red (cups of blood in second movie)

I read your message to DH, and he actually jumped up and done in appreciation. All of the suggestions but the whips are his.

How about a big cheese ball "rolling through a "ramp" of something (chips, pita pieces?) with a miniature Harrison Ford at the edge of the platter trying to outrun it?

    LOL Amberley! I love it!

You have to do dates. It's a moral imperative.

I have a good recipe for stuffed dates...
pop out the seed, replace it with a small piece of parmesean or asiago and then wrap it with a small slice of proscuitto. Dab with a drop of balsamic vinegar.
Bake them at 375f for 15 minutes.

I love the cheese ball idea and I can't wait to see what you come up with for the monkey brains.

just google "halloween ghoulish recipes" and you will get some ideas to check out. There was a picture of some caramel spider candy that looked really cool on the foodnetwork site
I think a neighbor kid made some sugar cookies that were kind of brain shaped and then drizzled that red gel frosting over them. I'm sure you will end up with way more ideas than you can use. Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe you can pretend your fish fossils are pirhanas-hee hee.

The cheese ball needs to be REALLY big though! LOL!

Okay, I don't know about the food but I LOVED the Indiana Jones movies and can't wait to see the new one. And I just wanted to throw this at you...in the first movie, he boards a sea plane and then they show a model of the plane flying over a map. That's my brother's sea plane!!! Well not HIS plane, but the plane he was working on at the time. He was actually sitting on the plane during the filming. How cool is that?!

    Have fun with your party!
