How to disassemble plaque?

Hi! I'm wondering if there is a best way to remove the "ornamentation" on this plaque so that I can use it for something else. It's heavy, seems to be like a particle board that's completely covered in a laminate. I don't see any way that the ornies are attached, so I'm assuming some kind of glue was used. Do I just pry them off? heat first or freeze first to make it easier? Here are front and back photos:

finally got it. unfortunately, did damage to the 'veneer'.

Hi Kathy -- I mostly wanted to see if the base of the plaque could be used for a different kind of display. I'm thinking of trying something different for me -- it's not completely formulated in my head yet. :)
