Please help me pick the perfect chocolate

I am re-doing my guest bathroom and I want rich brown walls. I have white trim, white countertops and tub. My vanity is ugly cheap pickled wood that I would like to either stain espresso or paint a dark, almost black brown. I would add new pulls. I plan to use salmon or clay and maybe a little green or aqua as my accents in the towels, rugs, etc.

I have tried Restoration Hardware Flax. That's about the tone I want, rich and medium, not as dark as actual chocolate, more like cocoa or chocolate milk. Unfortunately, the Flax had too much green and came out very muddy. I then tried SW Sands of Time. This had the rich, clear, creamy tone with a hint of yellow that I like, but was too light. I would just try the color below Sands of Time on the strip, but the guy matched this for me at WalMart, and I don't think it's really Sands of Time, don't know what it is. He kept going back and adding colors to get it "close". Usually WalMart nails SW colors on the dot.

I am discovering that brown, like the tan (I had about 12 quarts of different tans mixed) in my main living area, can be one of the hardest colors. The undertones are maddening! Any suggestions? I don't want the ones that go too pink or green, I tend to prefer the yellowish undertones. I don't want to end up buying 50 quarts before I find the right color. I am thinking of trying SW Mocha, SW Nuthatch, and on the old SW fan deck, Safari Brown, Mexican Sand, or Corral Brown. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! Is there a trick to knowing what undertones will come out when it's on the wall? I can see them on the strips, but it is impossible to tell how strong they'll be on the wall!

I wish I could explain exactly the color I'm going for. I just want a creamy, rich medium brown.

Darn, my mind was on the other kind....the kind you eat! I saw that subject line and was going to tell you that "any" chocolate is the perfect chocolate to a chocoholic.....

Can't really tell you the perfect color for your bathroom but you can order large 8x10 sheets from Sherwin Williams online. I think Benjamin Moore has 5X7 sheets. The larger sheets show the undertones and true color much better. It only takes a couple of days to get them and they are free.

I have Olympic from Lowes Belgian Chocolate. It is made up in BM matte. It is a rich dark chocolate w/o undertones of green.

Here is a pic and you can see how the art work complements the color.

    Trailrunner,

Your color is exactly how DARK I want the color, but on my monitor, it looks almost purple!

Does anyone know which undertone is the best way to go to get a good, creamy chocolate? I really liked the SW Sands of Time with its peach-yellow undertone, but now that Restoration HW Flax has dried, I'm liking it better. The Flax sort of has that grayed out smoky effect which I think reads less "poo" brown than the yellow-browns can. So, should I try to find a grayed out brown like Flax with less of the green undertone that I don't like? Which undertone would work best with the salmon/clay and aqua/green accents I'm thinking about?

What about a color from the SW Latte strip? I think it is very chocolaty. I don't have my wheel with me right now, but we used Latte in several rooms. It might be too light for you, but maybe the color one darker?

Mmm, Latte looks really good. That's the brown I'm going for, I think, just darker. I'll have to pull out my fandeck and see what's below Latte.

Nope it isn't purple. Try going to Lowes and looking at the Belgian chocolate. It looks like melted chocolate.

    jockewing,

One down on the SW color strip is Hopsack. I've seen this on a 8x11 sheet and it was very pretty. I might go back into some of my rooms and use it as an accent in the alcoves. I think it might be right up your alley.

Well, after trying some more colors, including the old SW deck color Craft Brown, I have decided I'm really not going for a true brown. I want something that's kind of grayed out, more of a mushroom. I'm liking RH's Flax more and more-I wish it had a little less green in it!

SW Woodsey Brown is a gorgeous rich milk chocolate color. It's not green or purple or anything...It's a nice hershey bar brown :) The color chip is in their exterior paint section most likely, but it translates wonderfully inside. I've used it quite a bit.

If you want the color of dark chocolate verses milk chocolate, mix 50/50 Woodsey Brown with Black. I'm now doing all my trim that color.

Here's a picture of SW Hopsack. I've used it in my son's room (cowboy theme), and in our master bath. I love this color, and always get compliments on this choice. I think that this picture gives a good read on the tone, there's one area in the picture where the light from the window illuminates the color more than the rest and even that area looks true to what it looks like in daylight. Hope this helps!

Caminnc, how do you order the 8x10 sheets from SW online? I peeked at their website, but didn't find the right link.

Jockewing, have you looked at BM Hot Spring Stones? Gorgeous grey-brown. Too dark for me, but it might work for you? And a lot of people here like Ellen Kennon Mushroom...

Try Valspar's Milk Chocolate. No funky undertones.

Take a look at all these browns from House Beautiful; complete with descriptions! HTH!

Here is a link that might be useful: Chocolate brown

Bah. I was going to suggest maple creams. ;) I agree, tinker, chocolate with funky undertones is terrible.

My favorite "chocolate" is a gray-brown from Farrow&Ball called Charleston Gray.

Well, I ended up with Peppered Pecan (Olympic) from Lowe's. It has a touch of red in it. I finally got the room painted. Sometimes I like it, other times no. I decided on using aqua as the accent color instead of salmon. The aqua balances the darkness of the brown quite well. I got a great metalwork philodendron leaf from Pier One to hang on the wall. I also bought some lovely pieces of white coral and starfish. I got some great brushed nickel fixtures from Target. Also found a cream colored shower curtain with a geometric inset with a cafe au lait. It has a sateen like sheen and looks very rich.

I have the feeling I'll love it after getting all the fixtures on the wall, the towels hung, etc. I am thrilled with how great the pale aqua looks against the rich brown. I can't wait to pick out my vases, baskets, and other special touches. Pier One had a gorgeous turquoise pottery plate I'd love to hang one the wall, but it is too expensive for me right now.

I'm way late posting, but wanted to share our brown wall. We love the color. Very rich and warm. It's Ralph Lauren paint...

Wow! It looks great! Which RL color did you use?

Well, after living with it for a few days, the Peppered Pecan is growing on me. It is a nice rich color. I think once I pull off all the blue tape and get everything up and installed, pictures and towels hung, etc., it will recede into the background. When you are staring at nothing but a wide expanse of wall, you notice any and every perceived flaw with the color. I absolutely love my satiny cream and cafe au lait shower curtain, though. I finally hung it last night and I don't think it would look as good up against a lighter paint color. I also love the way my pale aqua rugs and towels stand out against the color. Can't wait to find more turquoise and aqua accessories to add. I really am falling in love with aqua for some reason!

It is Ralph Lauren "Library Mahogany".

So far Ralph Lauren is the best paint I've ever used. It goes on so flawlessly.

jojoco that room is lovely !! We are doing my husband's study using Craig and Rose Opulence Matt Velvet Deep Burgundy on the top 2/3rds and on the bottom third under the mahogany dado rail, Crown Fashion for Walls Indulgence matt emulsion Tempting which is the exact colour of Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate and makes me want to lick it !

We painted our gameroom / theater room BM Davenport Tan and it is definitely more of a true chocolate bar chocolate color vs. a milky, latte colored chocolate. We love this bold color and although we hesitated taking a leap to something this dramatic we really love the results. The room isn't dressed with curtains or many accessories yet, but you can get a basic idea of the shade.

    With natural light streaming in:

With just overhead lights on (window blinds closed):

A little peek at what the same room looked like when we bought our place with different paint:

Isn't it amazing the difference a little paint can make!

I'm one of the few women that doesn't care much for chocolate but (maybe that's why I'm getting ready for a hyst) I absolutely love these rooms. My friend has a lighter chocolate color in her family room that I don't care for but I absolutely love the game room above. I have 1 more room to be painted and am now on the fence!

    OH My!

Gardenergwen - I just love that denim sofa/sectional. Would you mind letting me know where you got it? I think denim just looks so comfy!

Thanks Boo - I'm afraid I don't know the manufacturer or retailer. It *is* as comfy as it looks! It was a Craigslist bargain that we got for a few hundred dollars as the owners were getting a new leather sectional. We love that the whole thing is slipcovered which makes it super nice for popcorn and snack eating without worries on movie nights.
