FH dining room table finally here, lots of pics

Well, for those of you who have been following my new house struggles...the DR table is finally here. It's a French Heritage with a carved edge. I like it a lot. The pics here are without the leaf.

I'm showing the other pics because it's an open concept with angles everywhere.

The only things staying are my mom's corner hutch, the curved sofa in the LR, the settee, the piece in the entry, and the Century chair ($150 at a Toms Price outlet in Chicago) that's on the right side of the DR table. The black Chinoiserie coffee table that I got on craigslist looks pretty big in front of the sofa, yes? Plant, lamps, end table, all going.

Walls are SW Ivoire that's reading really yellow.

What I need...DR chairs, buffet in the DR nook, window treatments everywhere, something to do with the odd niche in the entry (last time I asked about it, DH wasn't to thrilled with ideas of drywalling over it, lol)crown in the DR and was thinking of some molding on part of the DR ceiling and maybe a subtle green metallic in the center), something special to do in the DR nook where the smaller buffet is now.

Oh, and did I mention that I'm running out of money?

The dining room is important to me because it's one of the only rooms that doesn't have 18-20 ft ceilings so I can actually have some fun with it.

I've been narrowing down my search for rugs (with OS's help) :) and think I've found one for the DR.

My style? is French/Italian eclectic with the back of the house being much more relaxed.

Any and all, people...keep 'em coming.

Thanks!

I love the table! I wish I had the space for a round dining table - I think they are the best for eating, conversation and game playing.

The walls look great and not too yellow to me at all, but I am partial to yellow walls anyway.

The coffee table does look a bit too large and I am not sure I like the coffee table with that sofa.

I might try a different color in the niche and put somthing tall and interesting inside to make it a focal point.

Oh wow, you have some beautiful stuff. DR table is GORGEOUS. Please send all of the chairs in the pic to me, lol.

    LOVE the wall color.

Think the DR chairs should be, perhaps, a bit darker wood than the chair that's there now.

Think we need to rethink the rug for the DR. The furniture is perhaps too elegant and formal for the rug you have in mind. But maybe not. . . .

    Piece in the entry: Fab.

LR coffee table: Will look fantastic once you have rug and accessories in place. I'm SO glad you got it!

Gotta' run take the dogs for a swim. Back later. . . . !

The table looks beautiful in your space and goes prefectly with the chandelier and your Mom's hutch. Does FH not also sell DR chairs?

Is that coffee table the cloisonne one? I did not realize it was so big as it looked much smaller in the pics. It looks georgeous though. Can you show some better pics of it? I would be hesitant to use it for a coffee table though unless it has some type of protective covering. I would not want people putting their drinks on it.

I love the dining table esp the carved edge and the shape of the pedestal.
Ok if you are sending all the chairs to OS, then I need the coffee table!
I look forward to see how you progress,I like your house very much.

clt3, it probably is the same one. My mom was a decorator there, years ago.

OS, that's why I was considering a flat weave. I like the look of mixing rugs, a tribal with formal, etc. I have a link if anyone wants to take a gander.

Thanks robynpa, it was DH who begged for a round table. He even wanted a round rug but I drew the line there. Too many arches, curly-qs and round things in general, now, to add a round rug.

Who said that men had more 'linear' thinking, not mine.

Just checked the link and it just goes to their main site. I was looking at the Ishtar rug.

Love your new table, Parma! Your wall color is so warm & I can imagine how it's all going to be so cozy & inviting...you're off to a great start. Love the cocoa-colored curved sofa--so romantic--& it's in a lovely space, perfect for reading or conversation. Saw the rug you are thinking about & love that too. It has great pattern & colors. Keep us posted!

Just love the new table, round dining tables are my favorite and I do so wish I had one myself. Yours is beautiful! I can see a darker chair being used with it, along with your mother's corner hutch, and that would be stunning. The site was down, so I couldn't see your intended rug, but I'm sure it will be yummy. You have such good tase.

That coffee table is to die for, and I'm sure that once everything is in place, the size will be perfect. Love your new home!

Val, the coffee table was a craigslist puchase that I asked about in a post that was called something like "should I get this nice/ugly coffee table". It's not an antique, just something that was used in a model home. When I priced it new, it was $800 so I figured that $175 wasn't that bad.

As far as getting French Heritage chairs, this table was the most expensive thing I've ever bought and will ever buy. I'm really not in the FH league, lol. I have to do the rest, budget.

OS is right in her opinion (not on this post) that I should start looking for antique furniture. I really don't want my home to look like a 'model home'. Problem is, the older chairs I find aren't high enough for the table.

I love your new table, it's gorgeous. I didn't realize the coffee table was that large, it looks fabulous too. Oh, it's all going to look so beautiful as it gets pulled together.

I want your settee. I'll be glad to send you my address. LOL

Love the dining room table, what beautiful carving on the edge! I really think your home is pretty and like your choices so far.

If you are interested in some nice antique furniture (I'm not sure where you live but I've had things shipped from both these companies) here are a couple links to dealers I've been very happy purchasing from.

    www.acantiques.com
    www.harpgallery.com

Both had reasonable prices, nice quality furniture and shipping was handled professionally.

When I figure out how and get the inside finished, I'll post some pics.

Right now I'm getting ready for my first grandchild to make his appearance Friday. Have to remember priorities :-)

Well you are surely on the right track .. because when I viewed the first photo, I thought to myself how in the world did she get such a warm european countryhouse look in a house I know is new construction! I know it is a work in progress but it is definitely giving off THE vibe.

I LOVE the table... it's just the right shape and color and the details are gorgeous! I expected no less-- but it is just so wonderful to see it in your room.

I really like it with your mom's corner hutch too-- the pair of them really makes the euro eclectic statement.

I've never been good with chairs-- but I really like the style of the curvy frenchy black chairs in the room. I know you think you have too many curves and circles in the room but I love them. What I would REALLY love is a mix of all different chairs-- all gorgeous rich wood european style chairs. I admit that might be too much even for mixy matchy people like you and I.. but I think it would really work in your room. I also fear it might be too much since your kitchen chairs are two different pairs. (I'd do it though!!)

I also love the rug-- it's absolutely gorgeous- but I think you might need a touch more of a rich color (red) in the room. I don't think you need a red rug but I think that some red accents on the floor would really enhance your room. I wish they had a bigger photo of the rug though so that someone could photoshop it into the room. I so love it that I'd really like to see it work for you. (I wish I could make it work for ME darn it hahah)

I do love the cocktail table but I agree that it is too big. It fights in the room and that diminishes the shape and beauty. Any chance you have another place to use it? Maybe a sitting area? Though it is big, I could see it with chairs in front of a pretty window or in a lonely corner that needs and unexpected little vignette.

Hmm what else? I've been interrupted by IMs and dogs needing to go out ..

I love the settee too-- it actually is making me want to try a settee in my LR. A friend suggested one for near my fireplace and I poo-poo'd it. I may have been too quick.

I smiled too when I recognized the Chef's catalog boxes. ;)

I know you want everything done now... but you are so on your way. There is already such a warm, welcoming feel to the room.. it has already come together even before you replace the pieces you intend to and add artwork and lamps etc. It's just going to keep getting better and better with each addition.

(and I am recovering from a summer cold too-- it stinks.)

I really love your coffee table! It is so unique and just beautiful!

Here is a similar table that is wood tone and black from JCP. I am not so sure if the wood tones match from your pics esp the close up looks more antique oak to me than an antique cherry but you maybe can get an idea of what the two may look like. The black is a flat black color and matches our flat black small chandy.

You have a beautiful home and I am sure you'll find just the right things to fill it.
    Good luck!

The room and all I see are gorgeous. The table is just beautiful and I'm hoping you'll find the right chairs for it soon.

I love the flow, the arches and the walls. Whatever the color is, it works so well with your darker pieces.
It's the pits when the money starts drying up just as things are really coming together! Love your taste.

That coffee table is absolutely gorgeous. In my opinion, it fits perfectly. When you asked about the size and wondered if it were too big, I looked at it and immediately noticed that, according to the picture, it looked like it was the exact size (end to end) of the sofa cushion. It seemed to fit like a glove to me.

I like the dining table also. Your place looks beautiful. I am fairly new here and am wondering if I have seen pictures of your house already because I have really enjoyed looking at everyone's homes.

I love this site, it is better than reading a book or watching television. It is quite addictive. Everyone seems so nice here and I love reading all the advice everyone gives.

From the looks of what I see so far, I'll bet that your home will be a showplace.

    Thanks everyone.

Jova123, welcome to our little playhouse (GW home dec). It's lots of fun here and though we have a few squabbles now and then, for the most part, we're a happy family of decorators who love coming together and helping each other.

Red, I admire your home sooo much. Thanks for chiming in on mine and yeah, it pretty much sucks when you see the $$$ starting to dry up. I'm putting off the window treatments to the end because if I do them now, I know I'd be broke, quickly. :)

Lyban, yep, I only have one of those chairs and will use it as an accent. Wish I could afford to buy 3 more, though.

Alohamillion, you have a good eye. The table is actually ash (same look as oak) and IRL doesn't look as frou frou as the shape suggests but more relaxed and aged.

Bfor, Toms-Price is where I bought the table. They do carry French Heritage. Its quality is excellent. There wasn't a floor model of the table there but my salesperson had the distributor drop off a sample of the finish (which she let me keep).

I got it at the Wheaton store and the gal's name was Linda Coppersmith. We liked working with her. DH won't 'dress' for furniture shopping and the rest of the sales floor looked at us like we didn't belong there, lol.

Funky, lol about the Chef's boxes. When I get frustrated about decorating, I revert to some of my former passions. I can't garden yet so I bought a new rice maker.

I had thought about a red rug. The ones I liked were paired with blue. The DR LR really isn't a very big space and an 8x10 rug will take up a lot of room. My collection of French and Italian pottery is mostly gold, green and rust colors and they will have a place of prominence.

The black chairs are not very nice IRL. Got them with the kitchen table from Macys, sight unseen. They were rated very highly on their website, from those who had bought the set. DH says they are very comfortable, though.

The biggest problem with chairs will be the fact that the DR table is 31" high and most chairs just look too small with it, especially antique ones which are usually smaller than normal to begin with.

Thanks also to superchick, lovin, stinky, nanny, bru and judd.

Ohhh.. I have wanted to buy one of the nice rice cookers for a long time but I have so little storage in the kitchen in this house. Did you get a zojirushi?

I like the shape and scale of the black chairs with the table--but not so much the color. As much as I like the single chair you'll use for an accent chair, I think it takes up a lot of space around the table. How many people would you generally seat at the table?

OK now that I know the colors of your pottery (would love to see pictures!) I want to vote to give the rug a try. I really love the rug.. I was just afraid it was too "sunny" for the euro eclectic style that's evolving. I can see why I steered away from the reds if they were always paired with blue. I just don't feel a strong blue in the room.

I am sorry I haven't been much help-- I am really so uninspired these days. I've stalled and started second guessing all my own plans. I feel kind of ridiculous offering suggestions or thoughts to anyone else.

You have a great living space.. that is going to just sing as you add more of your touches and pieces. I am really impressed by how much it's already transformed and doesn't have that new construction vibe. Take it one step at a time and appreciate every iteration towards your vision.

Parma: Yep, that's the table I remember. It's funny how much smaller it looked in the ad. My take on it is that I agree the scale is slightly off, yet it adds that something unexpected, that personal, unique touch that takes it away from as you say "a show home." I'd be inclined to leave it there, but as you go about your decorating balance out the scale with some larger items (non wood) to visually elongate the sofa--like a large floor plant or wicker basket. WTs will also bring the eye upwards and outwards if they frame the window and soften up the wood look that you have right now. We recently bought a large round patio table--we love the shape. We can fit up to 7 chairs round it. While I also love antiques, I would advise against pairing this table with antique chairs. As you mentioned the height/scale would be different. But I do think you are going to have to stick to one of similar quality as the table (or risk cheapening the whole look as a result). Perhaps you could start with just four chairs and purchase more later? Or perhaps a less expensive chair fabric? Or what about purchasing chair slipcovers--and put over existing chairs (or less expensive matching ones) for now? I know what you mean about the budget. In my LR one of the first things I bought was the sofa and window treatments. Then I had to scale way back and did everything vintage/CL finds. I couldn't be happier, but even though I love my window treatments, I think I spent way too much for them as they are all custom, plus a custom traverse rod. After doing the ones for my bedroom (JC Penny/Lowes) I definitely think I went overboard.

Val, I knew I would do the same thing if I started with window treatments. I love fabric and would have 'broke the bank' right there.

I've been pricing some decent chairs and if they have a sale...

Thanks lynn, joann and newdawn, btw newdawn, the settee is one of the cheapo things I bought to balance the budget but one of the things I get the most comments on.

Funky, lol you know me well, yep it's a Zojirushi. DH said I didn't have to take it out of my home budget so it's a gift to myself. We could live on basmati rice so the cooker will pay for itself, quickly.

I'll start a new post, soon, so people don't have to scroll through everything.

Since I want to have a mix of many different styles in the DR, I'm wondering how casual/formal I should go with the chairs. As mentioned before, the table is 31" high which needs a higher chair to look correct.

Since this is the only room with lower ceilings, I'd like to be able to have fun with the window treatments. I've always wanted at least one room in the house to have panels with fringe or tassles.

The Horchow chairs look to be a knock-off of some I've seen at Drexel-Heritage in their Venetian Way collection. They are more than tall enough, too.

So what direction am I going in, lol...tribal rug, French table, Italian chairs, Americana(ish) corner hutch, buffet TBD at a later date...?

    Thanks as usual!

Parma.. I really like those chairs with the table. I think think they are the perfect balance between formal-informal (with just the right tendency towards formal) and the finish is perfect.

I was also looking at Horchow for you the other day -- I had to scroll back to be sure I hadn't posted a link to them. My selection was a bit less formal.. but I liked how the backs echoed the pattern in the glass on your mom's corner cupboard. I thought it would bring that piece more into the fold. I ended up not posting though because I just thought they were too informal and didn't have nearly as nice a finish as your table. I thought you could do better... and you have. (Link below)

You do know to wait for one of Horchow's 15 or 20% off the entire site days, right? They have become pretty frequent.

I love your mix of styles, textures and patterns. How many french or italian homes have all perfectly matched pieces?Your look suggests a collection of beautiful things collected over time-- and that makes it all the more beautiful!

Parma, you have a lovely, warm home, and I think the table is a perfect fit!

I do have a few other thoughts for you.

I would not do wood chairs, but rather something upholstered. I think you have a lot of wood in the space, and when you add a large piece in the niche in the DR there will be even more. Instead, I would like to see something more like this:

carrington court chair with Eunice Adobe fabric

The rug you have chosen is pretty, but seems too pale to support the darker wood tones in the room. But I am not clear - is this rug for the dining area or the LR? I would do a round rug for the dining area, to work with the table and the angles in the space. Keep the rectangular rug for the LR area.

This may seem kind of odd, but would you consider taking the hutch piece from the DR and putting it in the niche, angled into that corner, by the front door? It is an odd space, and the little wall niche is kind of awkward. Since the door opens into that space, it feels as tho someone entering the house wouldn't really even see the area. It would be more visible once the door is closed and people are seated in the LR. I think the hutch might hide the little wall niche, and if you were to leave the upper doors open, provide a wonderful area for display that would feel custom made for the spot. The chest that is there doesn't really seem to fit, but fights the corner design and also the little wall niche.

You could then take the marble topped chest that is there now and put that in the DR on the wall between the LR and DR (where the dark cabinet with the tall candlesticks sits now).

I would then look for a buffet and hutch to fit into the inset wall space in the DR. Something with some curved lines to compliment the DR table. Perhaps in keeping with this?

    bernhardt grand savannah

Not sure if it would work, but I would like to see you move the curved loveseat in front of the two windows on the right of the pix, with the coffeetable in front of it. Once the coffeetable is moved away from the front of the loveseat a bit for breathing room, and you have this all sitting on an area rug, I think the proportions of the table will appear better, not so large as they are now.

I think the settee might be charming tucked against the stairway.

Then I would like to see a skirted, upholstered chair and ottoman angled facing toward the new location of the loveseat, located about where the left end of the curved loveseat is currently. A lamp and table beside it. Something like this perhaps, that would not have visible legs and would bring a bit more upholstery into the LR area:

    meritage chair and ottoman

I would take that corner lamp (currently cream color) and do a faux antique finish, starting out with a black base color (matte) then overlaying with some brown and gold tones. A black shade with tasseled edging, and you have a more elegant, less modern feel that would be nice in the room.

All of this, of course, should happen over time, and mixing antique and thrift finds is great.

    Hi again, funky!

Yep, I know to wait on everything. I get so many sale emails from all my places, I'd never think of buying any other way.

Les, thanks so much for taking the time to look things over. I love your idea of fabric chairs. Every time I'd look at something like that, the added cost was almost $300 per chair, which would bring the total, per chair, to $800-$1,000. The chairs you linked seemed to be well constructed.

Really interesting idea about switching the loveseat to the bigger window. It would take up what was a hard area to work with.

The cool little twists and turns of this house that appealed to me in the beginning, are really turning out to be a PITA.

I had measured the corner hutch for the entry a while back and it's not high enough to cover the niche. Do you think I could just add something to the top of it to hide the rest?

I could see if that coffee table will look better with the sofa moved, but I really think it's too big.

LOL, about the round rug in the dining room. That's what DH said but I told him we had so many arches and round tables that it would be overkill. Maybe I will reconsider. Wish they made more square rugs. The areas aren't really large enough to have two big rugs.

    Thanks again!

What is with the stores lately? All these promotions-- I get a stream of them every day. I really shouldn't complain-- but I always feel obligated to go shop so that I don't miss out on a bargain or that perfect new item. I don't usually buy anything-- but I sure waste a lot of time.

I like the corner cupboard where it is.. I think it plays a big part in the feel of the room. I am not too worried about the amount of wood as when you add your rug and pottery and artwork, it will break it up enough.

Funny, I thought you were being kind and generous when you commented on how alike we are-- but I am seeing more and more that our styles and likes are, indeed, very similar. I laughed aloud when I read that you love Anthony Bourdain! I probably shouldn't have been surprised.. but I was. ;)

OMG Parma.. I saw your table in person today. I have to say that it is even MORE stunning in person. I thought it looked great in your photos.. but even still, they really don't do it justice. The edge detail is gorgeous and the wood grain is beautiful.. it just has so much personality. What a great eye you have!

My designer thinks I should consider it. (I was telling her how saw a picture of the HW table I liked on ebay-- and I really didn't like it when I saw it in a room) If your table would work with the chairs I have now, I might have just handed over my credit card. They sell off the floor so I could have had it by Saturday... but it won't work with my chairs .. and I am not supposed to be DR shopping.. so, I'll enjoy it vicariously through you.

    Hey Funky, thanks!

I really like it and was a little nervous about buying it sight unseen. Was very happy that I got a sample of the wood first. With the carved edge, I didn't want the rest of the table to look too formal. The ash is distressed and the grain makes it look less frou frou. I'll be able to decorate in any style I want.

Too bad it didn't work out for you. We could have been twinsies sp, LOL.

You still going with the HW for your flat screen?

What style DR table are you considering?

    Morning, Parma!

Yeah, your table isn't frou frou in the least.. but it is gorgeous and really has a presence. It is totally jeans and pearls.. really really NICE jeans and pearls.

I want to see the edge detail in all sorts of lighting. I was thinking that I bet it looks great in low light/candlelight.. almost like a romantic spanish table. You are hitting all the romance languages/countries! (I see what you have on your mind! haha)

I could totally make the table work but I am not up for buying new chairs right now (shopping for or paying for)... plus in my mind it is YOUR table. :) Price-wise it is in the same ballpark with others that have caught my eye... but it far exceeds the quality and drama of the others.

I am all over the place with my likes-- imagine that! LOL I want something that looks "fresh" and "interesting" and that has taken me in all sorts of directions. I'll post pictures and where I am thinking in a few weeks. It was a project I had planned for next year but I keep feeling the pull now.

I AM still planning on the HW buffet! I firmed up my furniture selections last night-- in fact, I have written a long post with what I have selected and where I am still undecided but.. I was embarrassed to post it as I've dragged this out so long LOL. I had a few concerns about the buffet-- first the height, but my designer chick set up a section on their showroom floor for me. We put a painting over a chest the same height and set up a chair at my viewing distance. I think it is fine-- my other concerns are the fact that the drawers are velvet lined for silverware and just the cost. Will it look too out of place to have an expensive dining piece for the tv? I mean, I know I like the style and look of it for the LR but will it look too frivolous or silly to have my electronics on a NICE piece?

I am going with "no" for the moment haha (but still scouring craigs list and ebay). I am in the process of selecting a finish for it. Wow, HW has SO many finishes and some of them are just so cool. I narrowed the 100+ options down to like 10 or 12 (all premium, of course, darn it). I will go in next time with a paint sample since many of the finishes are in the ivory, silver, green, blue range. The black is still in the running too-- but I am definitely leaning towards a more distressed and unusual finish.

I just love that table and rug parma. I saw this one on the CL by me today and I am so tempted to get it. :) I really don't need a table though, just chairs, and the chairs in this add don't look that comfy to me.

what an interesting table, Boopadaboo! I agree, the chairs don't look all that comfy but they could surprise you. It's a great price -- I'd be tempted too.

Funky, these other two tables were on my short list.

The one with the white base (I wasn't going to do the white) and the close-up of the beautiful scalloped edge, is HW. I absolutely love that table. About the same price point but no leaf.

The other one is Drexel-Heritage which was about $900 less. I like that, too. It's also ash and I believe it's from their Venetian Way collection.

Just checked the pics, top #1 goes with the base on the last pic. HW is in the middle.

I just want to say that your table is gorgeous, as is the rest of your house! Stunning!

Parma, I definitely think you picked the right table for your home. The others are nice but yours stands head and shoulders above them. You will laugh if you see the other table I've had my eye on. It's about as far away in style as you can possibly get.

Its the first table in the Anthology group-- the one that looks kind of industrial. I am sending the link here rather than to just the table as it's really the whole look that I like-- the table, chairs and wall color too. (I also love the bedroom furniture. I really could furnish my whole house in HW)

It won't work with my chairs or china cab either. :( I may give the original HW table (with the multi leg pedestal) a second look. I just saw a pic of it on ebay with a whole bunch of junky crap and furniture all around it and I hated it. Location is everything, eh?

man.. i am sorry. I have totally hijacked your dining room post. I really didn't mean to-- I just wanted to let you know how stunning your table is in person (which clearly you already know since it is IN your dr ha)

    Thanks boo and balego.

Balego, I have had a lot of fun looking at your spaces. You have done such a great job. Your kitchen is becoming a true work of art!

Funky, hey girl, no need to apologize. My table's a done deal.

BTW, I absolutely LOVE that HW table. It's one of my favorite styles. That's the problem with us eclectic types, there is so much we like, it can be kinda hard to narrow things down.

I've always wanted a table like that in a library table design. Now, I have nowhere to put one.

I started researching Hickory White a while back. They are one of the fine furniture brands that is available at a good discount. For people who have the bucks, I don't think they can do better from a cost/quality perspective.

Just hope they aren't the next to bite the dust.

No kidding.. so many ARE biting the dust.

I just got off the phone with my designer. Bless her heart, hahah she is so patient with me-- she was quite gracious and insisted that we are going about this the right way and that the questioning and mind changing is normal with such an eclectic style but that the payoff is that I we end up with a much more interesting and beautiful room. (This is because I am panicky about the chairs we selected to flank the fireplace-- which will open into the dining room).

We've agreed to think about dining room design without a plan to buy in the immediate future. I told her just what I told you-- that I feel like I am all over the place and at two opposite ends of the spectrum. How can I plan around that?? I am so glad that you-- and she understand this. I feel like less of a freak.

I too always wanted a library room/table like that. I've looked at antique tables for years. The sad thing is that I had a library/dining room in my last house-- now I don't have the luxury of many rooms and I don't expect that I will again.

I am going to go ahead and post my selections so far.. because, well, how much more embarrassed can I get? hahah. I'd love your input if you have time.

PS I really like your HW table too- and I think it could really work for me in one of their offbeat finishes.
