Old World- coastal mediterranean bathroom?

My bathroom right now screams '90's! It's got ivy wallpaper and I hate it! I want to re-do it so badly, but have a limited budget.

Hard to describe the look I'm going for, but I got it from a painting. Here goes: I want to do the bathroom, on a shoestring (ie: re-use most of what's there- vanity, toilet, tub) in an Old World them. A focal piece is a free standing cabinet that has bamboo trim. The painting is of a Grecian villa and it too has bamboo (trees), ferns and flowers in it. So want to go with that and make it "Tropical" but "rustic tropical", not "beachy". I'm thinking bronze urn, ferns, textured walls in earth tones. The painting has deep taupey-purple or amethyst flowers in the foreground and I love the thought of using that as an accent color to the earth tones. I already have the amethyst towels along w/ fern/moss green ones that are stored and ready to be brought out for "the reveal" (LOL).

All are welcome to contribute their creative juices to my project...... Any thoughts, ideas or links to websites w/ pics would be appreciated.

Just be a bit careful about overdoing the "theme" stuff - it'll get old before the paint dries :-). It's one thing to suggest the Meditarranean, another thing to be stuck with it full force when it's your little (compared to other rooms) bathroom for years to come. Also, the color scheme, while it may be beautiful, is a bit on the dark side, though not knowing what else you have in there (can you post a picture?) it's hard to judge.

    Hey Silkvelvet, find some couth.

Crazymomof4 - It would helpful if you could post some photos of your room or the art that you have. I'd look through a bunch of magazines or online and try to get some ideas. What color is your free standing cabinet? The colors sound nice together.

I'm having a hard time visualizing your idea, but can understand the need for change. I agree, it sounds like it may be too much for the smaller space so be prepared to edit it, sometimes less is more. You may want to try going to Rate My Space and looking through photos to see what others have done, maybe there will be some things you can use for inspiration.

Here is a link that might be useful: Rate My Space bathrooms

crazymom-you may want to try the HGTV.com general decorating board. I visit both boards. I do like this site but it is not as easy to post pictures here on this board as it is on HGTV boards. That would probably be my only negative about this site.

I am sorta surprise by that nasty comment too. Normally people are pretty friendly and helpful here. Sorry. Maybe I'll see you over at hgtv.

Crazy - I think your bathroom sounds like a fun project and interesting. Do post pictures though, those are the posts that generate more responses. Many of us are "visual".

I don't mean to off topic, but I do have to comment here.

First of all: silkvelvet, that was rude and uncalled for. A "Brit" in Crocs...perhaps that says it all.

Regarding the subject/style: I lurk more than I post and do so more as a diversion to my everyday life more than to get advise. Few homes, very few actually, are even remotely similiar in style to ours. We built a beautiful "Old World Mediterranean" home (in SoCal) a few years ago and at this point in time the decorating is pretty much done.

I bring this up as your Subject line caught my eye and judging the responses thus far, I thought I would share my experience that this forum is great, most everyone is very, very nice and helpful and supportive but when it comes to "Old World" or the dreaded term "Tuscan" the ugly seems to come out of people. Not sure why. You literally get comments like "I loathe Tuscan" or "I HATE dark trim and doors" or "I would NEVER have that style" etc. Pretty much only about Old World, Mediterranean or the dreaded and loathed Tuscan. (Can we call it Southwest Colonial?) These mavens of good taste just drop these little comments (bombs) when you least expect it. Not often, but some posters don't hold back.

Seems many posters are from areas where more traditional or transitional styles are common and they just can't picture the style in their own homes or don't see it in their every day lives. I am in the greater San Diego area and "Old World-coastal Mediterranean" is considered hugely desirable.

Again, you really will get some great input from a very nice group. There are many rooms posted that have similiar design elements to what you are considering. Look at old posts...the ones with pictures.

btw, I had (have) 3 boys.....they do come in teams.

Sorry, I not sure how I got "4 boys" out of your screen name...oops.

crazymom - I hope you will not let one negative comment keep you from participating here.

I'm sorry not to have much input for your original post - but I really am not very knowledgeable on old world. There are those here who will be happy to give some advice though - but posting a picture would be a huge help.

People here are normally very helpful and nice.

To post a picture, open a free account like photobucket.
Load your pics, resize them, copy the html code and paste in the message. When you hit preview here your picture should show if you did it right.

Crazy, I understand being put off by the one comment, this is not the first rude statement I've seen of hers today, but please don't include my comments into your general statement as it would appear you have done. My suggestion to you wasn't negative nor rude and had every intent behind it of being helpful though not acknowledged as such.

That said, describing something vs. seeing it can be two very different experiences for the reader and pictures are always always the most helpful. If you can follow Shee's directions and post some, I'm sure you'll receive some helpful feedback And AGAIN, if you look through the photos of Rate My Space, there are 1,000's of photos some of which may represent the look you're going for.

    Oh, lukkiirish
I feel so horrible! When my reply about the nasty comment was posted, I saw that you had posted at the same time I was composing my comment BUT your's got posted ahead of mine so it DID appear as if I was including you. So I immediately posted a response to you (even cut and pasted your username to get the spelling right) thanking you and saying how my bathroom is on the large side as bathrooms go. thanked you for the RATE MY Space link....and more but I forget what else. Maybe someone here saw it before it was deleted (I assume by the moderator). I did email the website admin. to complain about the rude comment and they deleted her post and my reply to her post but ALSO my post to you and I don't know why bc it had nothing to do w/ silkvelvet's post.
So, I apologize for the misunderstanding I DID try to avert it, but the mods deleted my attempt.

That's ok Crazymom...all par for the course! No worries. I have found the rate my space site to be very helpful for inspiration. Another place you may want to look is the bathroom forum. At the top of the page there is a gallery option and there's a lot of pictures there. Good luck!

I think a warm glaze for the walls would be beautiful. Very Tuscan. Or even Venetian plaster can be great (and easy to do).
Pictures are very simple to post. Do it once and you'll be hooked. Photobucket (like Sheesharee said) or Flickr. Both are free.

I missed the nasty comment but don't let that stop you, I just stripped off ivy wallpaper from my bathroom too so I know how exciting it is to have a bare slate! I think the amethyst and sage green will be great colors. please post pics.

I'm back! Sqwashed my index finger last night, so couldn't type.
sheesharee thx for letting me know how to post pics. I have done that process for another forum using photobucket. glad to know it will work here too. I'll try it later today......but ugh! my bathroom is ugly w/ the ivy wallpaper! -- a bit embarrassed to post pics!
lv_r_golden - First, I DO have 3 boys like you......the girl came at the end to make "4" and the lady rules the roost!. Your input was insightful. btw, your home sounds lovely! I understand people favoring a more modern styles of decor w/ bright colors and clean lines-- watching shows on hgtv I do notice that it is the popular trend. But I live in a 100+ yr old home w/ much of the orig. trim. A more historical feel suits the building best. I was "Country" in the 80's (who wasn't? lol) and then "Victorian" for yrs but, sheesh! got sick of chintz after a while! I don't stick entirely to "theme" to the point where it feels gaudy and cluttered, but add what I like using the general "feel" I'm looking get. Comments made about my home by others include: "warm, comfortable, and cozy" and I'm happy to hear that.
I'm glad so many nice posts followed yesterday. I feel very welcome now. Thanks to all!
Will try to post pics later today.

Ha! You think you've got it bad with Ivy? I'm dealing with penquins! NO JOKE. Post the pics and think nothing of it, the befores and afters will be fun in the end.

I think this sounds great. I love old world/Tuscan--mostly because I've gotten to visit Italy a couple of times. Some things never go out of style.

My hairdresser has this tropical/old world look in her shop. She had the walls textured (old stucco look) and painted a warm gold. A couple of pretty art prints add to the scene.

I'm flirting with the idea of amethyst paint or accents in my bath.

Have fun with your project. I can't wait to see photos.
