Matching custom cabinets to existing cabinet color: Any insights?

I posted this question on the kitchen forum as that's where I spend most of my time, but it probably belongs here: Do you know if there are people or companies out there that specialize in mixing colors to match exisitng cabinets?

I'm trying to get just the right color for my custom cabinets. I know what I want as my parents have semi custom cabs in their home and I love the color. It's a stained and glazed cherry but somewhat muted in color tone if that makes any sense. In any case, I gave my cabinet maker an actual sample of the wood and asked him to match it. He seems to be having some trouble with this. Are there companies that specialize in this?

Best way is to contact the company that made the cabinets and ask for the recipe.

Second best way is to go to a branded paint store(Sherwin Williams, etc) with a sample and hope a person with stain matching experience is there.

Last resort is to start experimenting---I'll bet there are at least three stain colors in the recipe---plus the tint added if the finish is oil based or shellac.

Thanks Handymac. Do cabinet companies share recipes? I figured they were carefull guarded secrets!

Sherwin Williams may be my best bet.

@margieb2, Hi Margie, I'm wondering if you could share what ultimately ended up working for you. We are in the same situation (basically, need to add some more cabinet surfaces that we want to match to the surrounding cabinetry. Any insight would be appreciated!
