More like the one you had of the smaller lamp. On first blush, I kinda like the bigger one and am getting tired of seeing so many buffet style lamps on end tables.

I am a sucker for ceramic lamps with a touch of metal, so I like it. But it does seem a bit heavy for your room. I think that it would look good with a fairly large ribbed shade in off-white silk.

The second lamp seems more appropriate for a bedroom. Just my opinion.

I do agree that the Ikea lamp is wrong there, too . . .not substantial enough. It was just something I had, and put it there while I found the right lamp.

Maybe it's just too heavy for the table? Maybe you like it as-is? I need a small table there, because as you see . . .there is very little room. (It's a small room overall.)

On the plus side, the base is iridescent, and the base will light up once we rewire it (if I keep it).

Also, please ignore my gold walls. Those will be changing in the not-so-far future!

Well -- I love it! And I would add a modern cylinder type shade to it -- just for fun!

I really like the lamp but as sable pointed out, it will need a larger shade and then what will it look like in context with the table?

Couple of choices...get a bigger end table (I know, you don't have the room), repurpose it elsewhere, or just say "heck with it" I like it and it goes there.

I like the white lamp, not the ikea lamp.

Take the lamp with you when you go to a lamp store to buy a shade.

I will never forget what the man in the lamp store said to when I was barely twenty one. I went in there going to buy a lampshade without my lamp. And he said, dear buying a lampshade without your lamp, is like buying a hat without trying it on.

That always stuck with me, cute, huh?

What do you think of this lamp? It was FS after I won (and was waiting for) the current lamp, but I think the scale would be better, just the wrong color.

I love the lamps. They have great potential...they would look so good in a bedroom on night tables The white lamp on the white table isn't working for me though. Find another place for them or find new end tables. A drum type shade would look good on them in a camel or black color, depending on the piece of furniture they end up on and the look of the room. Definitely better than the candlestick lamp!

I can't tell anythng without the shade. I don't mch like the style of the new lamp (it seems just dated like from the 60's) and prefer the Ikea lamp. But maybe a shade would sell me on it.

I like that lamp alot. I do not like the Ikea lamp in that room and I do not really like the new lamp on Ebay.
But I think the one you got is really nice. Perhaps if you just put a small piece of material or something on the table to downlook the all white. Anyways until you have a lampshade it is hard to judge.

Without seeing the whole room, my guess is that the problem is not the lamp, it's the table. I can see that you have limited space, but the table is (1) too low and (2) too dainty for the sofa. I think you need a table with more substance, even in that small space. Sorry... but I do like the new lamp!

I do think the table is too short and too dainty. I love it, though . . .but, I did think of a place I could repurpose it. So, when I find a great deal on the right table, I'll play around with the lamps some more.

I still don't know if I should invest in a shade for the new lamp, but I think I may have a new spot for it in the room where it doesn't look quite so huge (and I think the lamp currently in the space is too small, though I love it).

I also like the lamp and don't think it is huge. The table just looks to delicate for the lamp. hmmm how about putting a decorative mat underneath the lamp and maybe a decorative box underneath the table to add some substance.

Why not photoshopping the shade before going shade hunting? That way you will have a better idea!

You could, eventually, change the table for a bigger one and about 4" taller. Do you have a night stand just to try and take a picture?

The Ikea lamp is too tall (it's taller than the table). Ebay lamp is not substantial enough. The white lamp is not bad, not my taste but not awful or really ugly -- the thing about lamps is it has to be something YOU like first, and then you see if it goes with what you have sizewise etc. Only thing about this one is that its tall metal base seems to be competing with the fretwork "fence" our your table. Also, a shade large enough for it is probably going to overlap the table top too much. I don't think the lampshade is supposed to be bigger than the table top.

I also agree that your table is too small for the area, but it is really a darling table. Could you replace it with something a little more substantial, and then the white lamp will not be too big?

Otherwise, I can see a traditional curvy little ginger jar lamp on wood base, with the top of the shade coming up just a little higher than the bottom of the Ikea shade.

I love the lamp and you say the base will light up when you rewire it. Way cool.

I like the table and the way it looks like the whole room is going.

Since you say you are going to rewire the lamp and it needs a harp, (I think thats what they are called) can you lower the lightbulb base a bit and use a small harp? Then use a simple clean lined cylindrical white shade. It would have a great vintage funky look.

Vintage lamps tend to be huge, with large bases and giant shades, but they can be made to look cute with smaller lower shades.

It's a nice lamp, but not for the table you have it on. The table looks to be shabby chic and more romantic in style, and the lamp too modern. I don't care for the smaller one either.

If you have a Home Goods in your area, they have some very resonably priced lamps. Shabby chic too. ;o)

here are some ideas:

I like the larger lamp. The table looks too dainty for the lamp. Do you have a nightstand or other chunkier piece of furniture to place next to the couch temporarily with the lamp on top? Then you'd know if it's the lamp or table that doesn't look right.

I like the lamp, it is the table that is too small. The lamp needs something more substantial under it.

I like the first lampshade, the white cylindrical one.

I think the problem you're having is actually that the yellow of your wall may be too bold for the style of the table and lamp that you're using. Maybe you should consider canning both those lamps and opt for a lamp with a tubular glass base so you can fill it with something that will help tie the colors together like brightly colored glass ornaments, mini limes, marbles, something fun. My daughter & son in law bought this unique dining table, it's got a glass top that sits on an empty rounded copper bowl. Since he brews his own beer they filled the inside of the copper bowl with different colored beer bottle caps (hundreds of them). Some of the caps have the same bright orange color they chose paint their walls in. It doesn't seem like it would look that great, but you'd be surprised, it looks fantastic!

OK . . .so the general feeling is that it's the table that is wrong, not the lamp. Darn, darn (can I say that here?) because I love the table, and I am not as in love with the lamp. But, I can see how the table isn't really substantial enough near the sofa, even w/o taking the lamp into account.

So, what is "the rule" for a side table? How tall should it be relative to the sofa? My mom's rule is that it should be LOWER (much lower) than the sofa and she was with me when I bought this table, so this is new to me!

marthaelena: WOW-- you are just learning PS? You look like a pro! Those mock-ups are so very helpful! I do like the lamp more seeing all of the possibilities, but I think that the last shade goes best with what I'm trying to go for-- a casual cottage style that is homey yet elegant, yet not Shabby Chic.

lukkiirish: The yellow is too bold in general! I don't know if you saw in my OP, but I mentioned that I'll be painting that room in the future . . .the gold is a thorn in my side!

In terms of the height of the table, it should be about the same height as the arm of the sofa (or chair). Think about setting a drink down while sitting at the sofa -- you don't want to have to keep reaching down to a table that is several inches shorter than the sofa.

I agree with Sueb20's postings. I like the lamp but feel the table is too small and low. I like my table top to be the same height of the sofa arm so I don't have to reach down.

Ah!!! No I'm sorry I didn't see where you wrote that, so what color range are you going to go for? The white table and covered sofa hint that you may be going for a shabby look, I think the table is great. Why not consider my suggestion regarding the glass lamp, it would look so pretty with sea glass, shells or something like that?
