Framed Kiri Japanese Print 5.5 Inches Above Sofa

The bronze frame with inner beaded lip members voted on was used to frame my picture (was my first choice and I was glad others liked it also) with an outer textured linen off-white mat and an inner skinny autumn brown mat with Optium Museum quality acrylic over this to have UV protection and be anti-reflective due to so much glare in the room.

The picture is now 5.5 inches above the sofa which heads can hit if 6 feet tall and if they lean back but they will not hit the picture if not leaning back. I am less than 5 feet so I don't hit the frame. The picture is 39.5 inches from the floor to the bottom of the frame. I really would like to know if my friend should move the picture higher on the wall and if so by how much.

Pictures are being shared before the picture was hung and after it was hung and the view of the rest of small family room open to the kitchen in an interior townhouse. I still must change the kitchen floor and eventually get a LCD TV and a glass stand or install the TV on the wall. Any other suggestions are welcome as I make the room comfortable and pretty.

By the way, I love the print and I am so happy to finally have some color in that room. Before I had installed the engineered BR-11 5" wide Brazilian Cherry floors in September 2009, I had beige carpets in that room and there was just way too much beige. The walls are BM Bone White in a pearl finish with BM White semi-gloss trim and a white popcorn ceiling. The room has a cathedral ceiling.

Thank you!

Hi Lynn, glad you're getting joy from your lovely print.

Taking a shot from that distance doesn't lend the same perspective as you get from being in the room.

However, I just read your last note on the other thread. I'd raise it higher a couple of inches if that means you'll let your friends relax and lean back. As chijim said, general rule 4" - 10", so you have wiggle room to place it where you feel good and you can let your friends feel comfortable. That's the most important thing about creating a welcoming home. Moving it higher is easy as you'll hide the original hanger spots, just don't put it too high and change your mind. Then you'll have to touch up. ;-)

BTW, hope you're using the hangers that don't create large holes. If not, they're easy to pick up at crafts and at big box stores.

Thank you abundantblessings for your post and opinion. I actually like the way the picture looks just where it is since I am less than 5 feet but I was surprised when my neighbor told me he could lean back and hit his head and felt the picture should be moved up.

I am going to see where my other friend's head hits who is stopping by tomorrow to see my picture since he is 6 feet tall and maybe that will help me make a decision.

My client/friend bought me new hangers that had three small nails the two of them to hold up each side of the picture since the ones that came with the Art.com picture looked not sturdy enough. I will check to see how big the holes it is making are.

I really am enjoying having color in the room and can't wait to get a flat screen TV after all my deadlines and professional continuing education classes end since I only have until the end of this year to catch up. I just could not stand living in all beige rooms any longer. .

    Again thank you!

    Anyone else with opinions?

It looks fine where it is. People should not be resting their heads against the wall behind your sofa.

graywings, thank you for your opinion. My friend from Canada feels the picture looks good the way it is but would look a little better 1" higher. But you are right that people should not be resting their heads against the wall behind the sofa. I just want my friend who is 6 feet tall to sit on the sofa to be sure he will not hit the picture.

It looks wonderful as is, Lynn. People should not be hitting their heads on it when they lean back. It does give it that spot of color.

    Perfect as is!
What about a floral pillow or 2 and maybe a cuddly throw?? Pottery Barn has darling floral pillows.

Valinsiv, thank you for agreeing with me that it does add that spot of color that my family room needed and it looks nicely balanced above my sofa despite my thinking maybe it should be up 1/2" to 1" higher. But maybe it is because I have never had anything over the sofa before so it is a new look for me. I just wish that Art.com would have shipped the picture with the museum quality glass that I wanted so it would be even more anti-reflective at I am going to have my 6 feet friend stop by to sit on the sofa later on before we go see a movie that I have been wanting to see to see where the top of his head hits.

Loribee, Thank you so much for letting me know that you love the picture as is.

After I finish a few more deadlines and take those classes that I am behind in, I will experiment with some pillows and a throw. Thanks for the ideas. :) I love having some color to the room.

Everything looks really nice! I can see why you like that picture so much- it's beautiful.

Love the picture! The way I see it, if you have close friends over and they're relaxing on your sofa and happen to lean their heads back, they're not being rude. It's a natural thing to do.

I hung my pictures at the same height as your's, but the back of the sofa was thick and there was no way anyone could touch the picture with their heads, unless they were 7 feet tall. lol

Your friend would be a perfect "model" for you to use!

My friend leaned back on the sofa when he arrived before taking a break to have dinner and see the Planet of the Apes. He leaned back and did not touch the picture until he forced a really leaning back and then his head just touched the bottom. He feels the picture should be up 4 to 6 inches but too me that is too high up and will not look grounded and would be too high for me to enjoy looking at it. I am trying to decide to keep it where it is and just wait another week or raise it another inch to be 40.5" above the floor and 6.5" above the highest end points of the sofa and 7.5" above the middle of the sofa which is about 1" lower than the ends somehow.

Thank you nancybee_2010 and Oakleyok for the compliments on my beautiful picture that really adds the color that I needed in that room since I got tired of living with the neutral beige for too many years.
